I want to support North American knife makers but you're completely right. About $90 is what I might pay for a small 5160 fixed blade w/ cord wrap. At $200 , it opens a whole realm of knives with better steels, larger and micarta scales. Personally, I really like those SURVIVE! GSO series in 3V...at the $200 dollar mark. The heat treat is by Peter's so it ain't crap.

I'm not sure why there are a bunch of comments on the cost...they are worth every penny that someone is willing to spend. Go to your local hardware store, locate the pruning shears, pick yourself up a replacement pruning shear blade. They run around eight to ten dollars, have different shapes with a 'chisel grind blades', are easy to sharpen and the 'handle' area can be easily be wrapped with your favorite cord. Lastly, if you lose it, no big deal, back to hardware store. I love mine.

I wanted to thank Sootch for doing a great job on my review. The consensuses is that this is a great good quality knife but to expensive correct? Well most of the people complaining are teenagers or young adults so that makes sense that they have little money. For those that are comparing this to ESSE, You are way off this is not factory made knife It was ground out by hand. I will be giving a Sootch 20% off scotch discount go to the website it will only be up for then end of this month! Thanks

Yes I know all about the market and stream lining, however Esse has an factory and army of people working and automated CEC machines. I'm one man in a small shop making knives with grinders and hand tools. Its like comparing apples to oranges. If its all about the cost then I guess you have your answer. Sootch has been a great friend and positive influence on my business. I hope one day to go commercial and not have to spend days in the grind shop, until then I have to get paid for my work. TY

5160 is a great steel, super tough and it will take surface rust if not maintained but does not take pitting and the rust will clean up easily. The finish is really nice but i don't think a hollow, chisel grind would be my first choice for a survival knife. A little chopping tip: if you bend the sapling a bit as you chop, it stresses the wood fibers and makes chopping it much easier as they pop under tension when the blade impacts.

I recently went to my local Ace Hardware store, while browsing I saw replacement pruning shear blades. I bought a one, took it home, sharpened it, wrapped the handle para cord and have decided to order a sheet of kydex for the sheath. Blade cost $6.99, has chisel grind and enough blade & handle length to work effectively. For a low cost 'get-away' knife let your imagination go.

They don't make this one anymore, sadly. They have a new and improved Last Ditch 2 - but it has a thicker handle with a kitchen knife look to it. No paracord hilt.
@1AbominAble112 жыл бұрын
I noticed some nice touches that others may have over looked on the knife like the rounded edges where the handle wrap is and where you place your thumb on the spine, maybe the complainers don't realize that this all adds to cost and the quality and feel of the knife. This particular model is not my style as I'm not a fan of the chisel grind but after seeing the design ill be subscribing and checking out your other knives.

if ur looking for a fixed blade knife as a do everything outdoors knife, id go for the esee 6, or the 4 if u want a smaller knife, i dont like the 5 cuz it doesnt have the finger choil and its not full flat ground, i dont really like this knife either, its thick and the partial flat grind makes it too steep to cut wood efficiently, for a knife to fit this role id go with the esee izula, just my opinion, and im a 17 yr old highschool senior, so i understand ur situation

Yes I understand we basically are a china-mart consumer driving economy however, knife collectors and people in the know realize what it takes to make these. They are not for everyone. I know guys that pay $800 for a Medford folding knife and over a $1000 for a Busse Knife. You have to wait 3 years for a Randell knife. So I ignore the ignorant comments. One day when my knives are worth over $1000, people will say dam I which I would have gotten on for $200 Thank you for the support Sir!

Be careful, Sootch! Carrying items in the small of your back can very easily result in a broken spine if you fall on it. Having an item for a "step" there, it doesn't take much to dislodge one vertebrae from another should you fall upon it with your whole weight.
@chrisloUSA12 жыл бұрын
Since you're reviewing knifes think you can do a review on knife sharpening tools? I have seen these simple devices on the internet that you just run the knife through and it sharpens the knife. You don't have to worry about the angle you run the knife or oils.

Hello, I'm a long time viewer that's loved your channel for a while now. Found the channel from TNP. First comment on KZbin actually, but my question was in today's market is this really the blade to go with for the price? 170$ is a lot to me. But I want to build my prep as efficiently as possible while being a college student going for my degree. I understand the video is promoting it but is this towards people that need 1 knife for such use or people who can afford it with today's choices?

It's 1/4" steel so I'm guessing 7 or 8 ounces? I guess it's just a thing for some folks but I'm not trying to down your product I just feel there's knives out there for a better value. Like some similar blade for around $65. Maybe the custom knife world is it's own little niche but it seems you are on par comparing to the rest of the custom guys.

@3riverblades12 жыл бұрын
I have not seen any of your knife making work posted anywhere. If you are than your understand that your opinion is selective. Chisel ground knives are stronger than double edge knives by design. The hollow although weaker can provide a better cutting edge on a 1/4 stock. This knife is 5160 tank. Its concept is when all else fails this is the go to knife. Its doesn't do everything the best. Its the last-ditch cutting tool to help you survive if the SHTF. Cost is relative to the work. Thank You.
@OpaKnows12 жыл бұрын
With a 1/4" blade, why not grind out the other side? Is it a novelty thing? Because having it ground just on one side really limits the effectiveness of the functionality, IMO, just my mileage. It's always going to act like a chisel when going through wood. For me, the name fits.

That's a nice-looking blade. However, I can't stand a paracord handle. Paracord gets dirty, comes unraveled, dirt gets between the laces, water, oil, and other liquids destroy the paracord, and there is no "cushion" when using the knife to chop, and that is very uncomfortable. How can I put a handle on that knife? With a good handle I'd love to have that knife.

$90 hardly covers the materials, heat treat and the electricity to make it. I suggest if you think its so cheap / easy to make than please you try it yourself then make 8 more. I have a ton of equipment but I would have to hire some one to run it,. $150 knife divided by 40 hours is $3.75 per hour, per knife... would you work for that??? I think most folks that have never stood in front of grinder for 10 hours per day don't know what they are talking about. Thank you

Like the vid...hey it's sootch!!! But I have to say that I would not spend a dime on a piece of stell like this. To me it's not worth more than 15-20$ and I'm generous. The satin finish rush easily. You need a greath polish. More rope and better wraping to protect you're hand. Also a one side bevel makes it hard to use for lefties. The two holes are good idea you could make it 3,4 or 5 just to make it lighter.
