Is Nutn getting sentimental in his old age? ;) I love this affection he is showing for the more traditional knives lately. Make no mistake, I am still very much a modern knife/modern materials kind of guy, but these type of blades remind me of the days as a child when I went to camp in the summers with my "camp" knife. All the "big boys" had these gorgeous knives in their beautiful detailed leather sheaths. Great fun. Thanks for showing, Nutn.

I just picked up a Randall then I was recommended this and I saw the review. I did a very close side by side comparison. They are very similar, but still worlds apart. Randall's just have that something special that can't be put to words. Blackjack is nice, but it's still not a Randall. I've thumped on mine a little and I'll thump on them some more. I'm liking these knives.

I love my 1-7, but it is definitely NOT the same quality as my Model 1. Close, but not quite. Of course, the Randall is forged, the Blackjack is stock removal. The fit and finish is superb on the Blackjack, but the Randall is noticeably better. The lines are slightly more elegant as well. The Blackjack need to be reprofiled as the edge seemed to have been overheated during grinding, resulting in chips, tho now it's fine. The Randall is a great value, minus the wait, for a forged knife, and the knife and sheath are as perfectly made as can be. The Blackjack is superbly made, and VERY high value. Go order a Randall to get in their que, and then buy a Blackjack. ;)

Bark River, Blackjack, Scagel, Lon Humphrey, Blind Horse...all great blades - and the list goes on of course. I wish you'd do some heavy use videos of soemthing like a Bark River Golok - and you might even be surprised on how it out performs other blades out there that are 80 bucks. One of the reasons they have a large fan base, and the lifetime warranty they stand behind on these blades makes them users - you can send it back anytime and get it at factory new quality after beating it up.
@brianyoung22239 жыл бұрын
I agree Blackjack makes a fantastic knife for the money, but when you said "in terms of a collectable, forget Randall," you made a mistake. Your knife will not hold its value and even appreciate the way a Randall will. Closely inspect and hold a Randall and you will see why, and that is even disregarding the historical import of Randall Made knives, especially the Model 1.

Hey guys! I just received the Blackjack model 7, ( ordered the green micarta saber handle ) on amazon for about 180$. It's pretty but I have to say my initial impressions aren't as great as the samples nutn showcases. While minor there are a few issues with the product I received. the sheath is VERY tight -- I have to really push to sheath or draw the knife, which leaves long marks on the steel. At the area of blade touching the hilt it is important to notice that the "through tang" construction is about half the width of the actual steel and as such there is a fairly noticeable gap between the blade and the hilt. The fit is not as impressive here as it is on the rest of the knife. These are the only flaws I could find, and they may just be this particular knife. All in all still an awesome blade, mine could also use some sharpening but thats an easy fix :) Thanks for the recommendation, nutn! Can't wait to take this one out to the woods! P.S. If anybody has a solution on how to break in the leather sheath please let me know!
@Naamturd1019 жыл бұрын
+MaCiScLeAr you can mail it in to have all that stuff fixed, I don't know why a leather sheath would mar steel, though. Leather sheaths come extremely tight, at least quality ones do...you gotta oil em' or water mold them to the blade...

The Sog agency, looks great, I bet sogs intent was grip not pretty, a little steel wool on the sog and it might be slick also. I like with my 1972 Old Timer 165. Last thing I cut with it was tar paper, it has marks on top of blade where I hit it with a hammer driving it through something, it's carbon steel I think. I also have Schrade Waldon honesteel and a Buck folder. My shrader folder and pocket 3 blade both broke, I wonder why. I like Sears, Mac and Snapon tool warranty.

I have the stacked leather pommel handle version (which I purchased because of this review), and I must say I'm very impressed with the looks and the fit and finish of the knife. Unfortunately, I did accidentally get a relatively substantial water stain on the leather sheath, so if anyone knows any simple ways to partially or completely remove something like that, or just reduce the visibility, any advice along those lines would be appreciated.

Sick Video, I absolutely love my Blackjack 1-7, and I used it so much in the woods, that I purchased a Randall Model 1 with Stacked Leather, I totally agree that the fit and finish of the Blackjack is just as good as the Randal, which is fantastic on both, the Randall does have a nicer quality sheath though. Blackjack overall makes some fantastic blades, I also like the Model 125, which is basically a Randall 25, although I haven't got the cash together for the Randall version yet. Keep em comin

I too have just purchased the stacked leather version of this knife and I have some questions for everyone. The knife itself is beautiful and well balanced. It did come with, what I can only surmise, is metal polish on the leather right next to the guard and pommel. Slight greenish tinge to it. Almost like copper patina. Fingernail scratching doesn't get it off. What can I do to clean this up? Stacked leather handle is classic but what can I use to preserve the leather and maybe give it more tack? Bee's wax with a little heat? Same question for the scabbard. Lastly, what would you recommend as an oil to use on the blade for storage? Knife is gorgeous and certainly a keeper so I'd like to make sure I'm treating it well. Thanks in advance.

I've never carried something as large as the Laredo Bowie that you showed. Is a blade that large still practical and easy to use, or does a blade start to become unwieldy when it gets to that size? i.e Is it something that can be used for precise/delicate cutting, or is it only suitable for rough tasks such as chopping through wood?

I don't know which would be stronger, but having owned both, I prefer the pommel handle. Nutn seems to prefer the saber. I suppose it is a matter of how your hand is shaped and sized. I actually started off with a saber and traded it for a green micarta pommel. Either way is awesome, though.

G10 is too . . . "ninja" for this knife. Micarta is sufficiently grippy to me. I put a micarta handled knife hilt deep through the lid of a #10 steel can @ work today, as I have done numerous times in the past. Add to that the cross guard and my hand ain't running onto the blade. As for the "full tang" is that a true full tang, or more of a rat-tail/push tang like on a KaBar or Randall?
