I'm and expat from Dallas living in Colombia with my beautiful Colombian wife. I stumbled on your videos and really enjoy them. Flew for the navy 20 years ago but you've ignited my desire to fly again. For the past couple of months I've been looking at what platform I want to return to and the Malibu seems to be perfect for me. I don't know how I'm going to accomplish this but just know that I am. Thanks for the professional videos... keep'em coming.

Good job on watching to ensure the autopilot is doing what you think its supposed to be doing even in the turn at EXIBY you're watching to make sure it captures as well, I do what you do, zoom in to make sure the little curve is plotted, that way I can override the autopilot if something doesn't look right - GOOD JOB!!

Great flight Captain, I'm excited for you to have the new engine. Baron Pilot did a video after he received new engines in his aircraft, and he couldn’t believe how smooth the new engines were, and was shocked how much more power he had. 444DT is going to feel like its on steroids. Well maybe, we'll see. Guess along with you we will all just have to wait patiently. All the best Bro.

Great flight and video. Really professional. We had just started watching you a couple of weeks ago, and all of a sudden we did not see you with any new video's lately and we wandered if everything was okay with ya'all. I know you will be down for a while till you get the new engine installed until you do we will be praying that everything goes well with that and that you get the perfect engine. Will you get the same horsepower or a 325/350 horse? Blessings my friend. Hope to see you in Ocala Fl sometime.

Thank you. An upgrade in HP sure would be nice but with FAA certificated aircraft, you are limited to the same engine/horsepower the plane was certified with. We’ll be back in FL sometime in November.

2019 was an expensive year for N444DT with a new engine and a new, modern, NexGen panel + 2018 Paint and interior. In return, you essentially have a new airplane that will last you and/or someone another 20 years. That is really what all of us are doing with 30 + year old airplanes, not maintaining them anymore, we are restoring them.

As an owner of a IO-520-L I'm curious what made you decide to overhaul instead of just fixing the leaky cylinders
@MalibuFlyer5 жыл бұрын
The engine was at 1940 hours and although I could have fixed two cylinders and flown it past TBO, I didn't see the value in spending for a stop-gap fix. It was a big pill to swallow but it was the right thing to do.
@210Driver5 жыл бұрын

Have you gone thru any cylinders over the life of the engine?we have a baron with 550C's that uses them like crazy.
@MalibuFlyer5 жыл бұрын
Hello. The top was overhauled with new cylinders at 1100 hours but that was before my time. I assume you're running them lean of peak? Are you seeing problems with valves or something else?
@ProPilotPete5 жыл бұрын
We have been running rich of peak in an effort to save the valves. Not much luck. Seems like the valves are the weak link on these 550’s, or at least the 550C variant. Had another clients G36 have 5 out of 6 need work after only 560 hours TT. Sad. Always ran rich of peak, cruise climbs to keep them cool, easy on descents, etc. Wish there was a liquid cooled version with solid state ignition. Enjoy the videos, keep them coming! Enjoy that new motor, break it in properly to seat rings, etc. and you’ll have very little oil burn. Good luck!
@pauldube62985 жыл бұрын
There is some chatter about the problem with the disc that rotates the valve wearing out prematurely on these engines. A very slight yet cyclical temp fluctuation in cruise being an indication the valve is developing a hot spot. Unfortunately, if you don't catch it promptly, the valve will fail from not rotating constantly. Savvy has an algorithm that watches for this phenomenon in your engine data but you have to be diligent about it as you only have a few hours of operation before the rotation slows to the point of valve damage.
@MalibuFlyer5 жыл бұрын
@@pauldube6298 This is VERY interesting as that is exactly what I was seeing on my #6 EGT's. I was seeing 120 degree spikes every 4 minutes almost to the second. I found that enrichening the mixture seemed to stop the spikes.
@pauldube62985 жыл бұрын
@@MalibuFlyer I suspect enriching the mixture just dampened the spikes. But we'll NEVER KNOW since you selfishly got rid of our test engine. I guess we will just have to resume the research when you hit 1000 hours on this new engine (next year).

@thefireman28545 жыл бұрын
They call it the jet prop, but they use a PT6A-21, not sure if they have ever done it with a RR, or other varients.
@korax97285 жыл бұрын
@@thefireman2854 Hi! Yeah I have heard of it and after checking its payload I was stunned to see that it goes between 200-300 pounds because it has to carry a lot of fuel for that pt6. I wonder if the RR would burn less fuel and carry more.

Was another aircraft shooting an approach to 36 at the same time you were on approach to 18 or was he at another airport? If yes, why?
@MalibuFlyer5 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes, another aircraft was requesting an approach to RWY 36 with a circle to land on RWY 18. You hear the pilot say that "they have circle to land minimums" and they apparently received clearance for the approach however, the chart shows 1620 as the minimum for that approach and as you can see, the bases were a little below that at 1600. I'm guessing that they were well behind us.
@socomon695 жыл бұрын
@@MalibuFlyer Thank you. Why would they do 18 with a circle to 36 rather than just shoot the approach for 36 like you did? I thought I head him ask to circle to 1 initially.
@MalibuFlyer5 жыл бұрын
@@socomon69 Just to clarify, it was just the opposite. They did a 36 with circle to land on 18 and I was shooting the approach to 18. My guess is that they were coming from the south and didn't necessarily want to fly all the way north of the airport for the approach. It certainly would have been a good opportunity to practice a circling approach right at minimums. Too low for me...
