Only because it’s never really been seen before. In reality, altitude isn’t really an issue for turboprops. The only reason they haven’t gone that high before is because there was never really a need for it as turboprops usually serve a special purpose. Additionally, creating turboprops that are efficient at that altitude takes a little more engineering and quality and that just adds cost. The real issue with Turboprops is speed. Cruising at FL410 isn’t really doing you much if your max airspeed is 260 knots.

The copilot who was the PF handed over to the AC for a few minutes while he donned and tested his mask, then took control back, The pilot explained that above FL350, one of them must always be on O2, Watching guys fly single pilot at 410 or even higher while unmasked makes me nervous. The Piaggio's unique "wail" is unmistakable as a charter service flies over my house every day. I can hear the newer EVO coming from miles away & its sound is distinctive with the twin turboprops in pusher configuration. What a phenomenal performer on 100 gallons total or less of jet A per hour giving near 400 knots. The only twin engine VLJ that compares with fuel burn is the Eclipse 500/550 albeit its slower top end & much smaller capacity at 5 place vs the Piaggio's 8 -10. Getting a ride in a Piaggio is on my bucket list before I lose more sight when it won't matter.

You remind me so much of my Light Sport CFI, Jason Bullard (and even look like him) who taught me at Falcon Field in Mesa AZ in '06 in an Allegro 2000 LSA, the Piaggio Avanti of LSA aircraft in its day. Jason said I learned to fly it quite well though I had to solo in a Challenger with another CFI because the Allegro was hard to book. I have only ever rented, I envy you for your Avanti ride--amazing tech like the Honda Jet, also cool. Jackson Hole was the only place I was ever in an airline accident. Our inbound 737 before I deplaned, last pax on the aircraft, was rammed by a luggage truck and I landed on the seat across the aisle, unhurt but I teased the gate agents a week later that I was when I flew home and they rolled their eyes. The 737 had to be ferried back to Denver because they were uncertain of the integrity of the fuse. The pax who would have flown on it gave the gate agents, who were my flight attendants, grief so I helped them once being a customer service manager stay cool which is how they remembered me when I flew home. I had to wait at Jackson Hole for my colleague to fly in from SLC which gave me time to secure our rental. Cool video--thanks for sharing--gr8 numbers on the Piaggio.

17:05. I don't know whether FL410 for a turboprop is "unreal", but some wartime Spitfires (notably the MkVII) could fly at 42,000 feet, with a pressurised cabin. Performance chart indicated at 44,000 feet, max speed is 376mph, 22.2 mins to height and still climbing at 300ft/min. (the highest altitude achieved by a Griffon-powered Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIX was 51,550 feet (15,710 meters) on a high altitude test flight).
