The way Metallica wrote songs was to just take a bunch of cool riffs and try to fit them together. They had full songs by Dave that they used on their first album, but I think it's mostly plausible they had a cool riff that Dave came up with, and either recorded it themselves on a riff tape, or forgot who played it, when they jammed it in to Leper Messiah. Although for all the people who think Mustaine wasn't a huge influence on Metallica, its a good example to bring up.

Mustaine also thinks he invented sliding power chords and intervals that have existed on guitar since its inception but because he frets them a certain way, he invented it. So I'll go with scenario 3, Mustaine didn't write it and just wanted credits on what clearly became one of their most important albums. Jamming to riffs and being in the room when they are written doesn't automatically make you the progenitor of said riff.

Here's my take on the leper messiah 5 count thing: you'll notice that the long held notes in the intro (it goes duh duh duhh, duh duh duhh *duhhhhhh* ) they alternate between being held for 4 beats and 5 beats. The first long held note is held for 4 beats, meaning the 5 count actually makes sense, as the held note that would have come before would have been 5 beats. you could make the argument that the section with the 5 beat held note is actually duh duh duhh, duh duh *duhhhhhh* , not duh duh duhh, duh duh _duhh_ *duhhhhhh* like the rest of the intro, meaning they could still technically be counted in 4/4, however i'm pretty sure that the held note being 5 beats is the reason lars decided to do a 5 count (at least that's my theory) i'm sorry if this made no sense whatsoever i'm not an expert when it comes to time signatures and music theory, i'm just trying to put my observations into words

Well, Metallica ripped off riffs from artists like Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, David Bowie and Axewitch (Swedish band), which were included, without shame, on their 80's albums. At least. Even the iconic heavy/fast machine gun riff from "One" was taken from the song "Darkness Descends" from Dark Angel. None of these are credited, though lol. So, "forgetting" to credit Mustaine on "Leper Messiah" is the least of their copyright infringement crimes.

Interesting take. Talk about being a Stan. Consider that Mustaine wrote things, got kicked out and then James and Lars decided to use his songs when they were asked not to. Then they spent years never acknowledging that Dave had any input with the band, and belittling his contribution. I mean, Kirk played in the style of Mustaine on KEA, as well. Without Dave's contribution on the first record, there is no record if they didn't use his stuff. So, you can say Dave talks out of his ass, but he would know better than you would. And James and Lars don't have a great track record of integrity when it comes to previous band members, just ask Jason.

@itsalwayssomething7490
@itsalwayssomething7490 23 сағат бұрын
@@deletedhero5579 The fact that they credited Dave wasn't out of the kindness of their hearts or because they acknowledged his contribution to the band. It was done to avoid Dave pursuing any legal avenues. Dave would be credited and receive some kind of royalty, so he is made whole. And this was probably at the advice of their manager or any lawyers at the time. Go watch the (MTV-Day On The Green interview 08/31/85). about a minute and a half in. Lars straight out says that when Kirk and Cliff joined the band, they contributed to the song writing, and the two previous members did not. That was their attitude back then. I would talk thrash too if my previous band took my songs, their guitarist used my style and then acted like I didn't contribute anything. So, I wouldn't put it passed them to continue to take ideas or things they were working on when Dave was in the band and used it for later albums. It doesn't even have to be malicious. It could simply be that maybe James played something he remembered from a few years before, and thought he wrote it. It's very easy to play a riff, think it's a new idea, and it was just something in your subconscious that someone else wrote.
@deletedhero5579
@deletedhero5579 23 сағат бұрын
@@itsalwayssomething7490But they did credit him and like i say he is personally thanked in the liner notes. The day on the green is in 1985 and Dave had already been trash talking the band in every interview and so Lars having a dig back. Anyway this whole thing of Dave saying don't use the music is a nonpoint because it wasn't just his music it was the bands and after being signed the record companies so Jonny Z insisted every song demoed had to be recorded for the album he'd sunk his entire savings to record the band. Dave reused his riffs in Megadeth and even recorded the song Mechanix. Kill em all lead guitar style isn't really exactly like Dave's, Kirk wanted to do his own solos but Jonny Z insisted they be recorded exactly at the demos so they eventually compromised that Kirk would do the first 4 bars like Dave's demos then do his own thing. And I don't believe for one second they used anything from Dave apart from the few he is credited for, especially as James was already writing more than Dave at the time he was in the band.

@@deletedhero5579 Well, I appreciate the cordial exchange. I think we have two different perspectives on this and I love both bands, so I am not coming at this from a hating Metallica pov. My point was, I think at the time it was a two way street. And as Metallica got more successful, their egos got bigger. At the same time, Dave got more bitter, because he felt he contributed to that initial success, which he did. And the more and more Lars acted like Dave had no impact on that early success and said so publicly. I understand why. He wanted to stick it to Dave, because Dave was a thrash talker. He burned bridges back then. All I'm saying is I understand where Dave was coming from, as he has said it to Lars in the SKOM documentary. And that it's easy to write something you think is your original idea and it turns out that it isn't. Or write something influenced by someone else's idea. It could very well be that James simply wrote something based on something Dave wrote, and Dave recognized it as his. But, James changed it to make it his own, sort of how the Blackened riff started out from Jason. Anyway, I acknowledge your arguments. With the 30th anniversary show, Metallica did acknowledge the songs Dave had a big part of, so all is good now.

What Metallica did to Dave and continues to do to him with credit and royalties going to people that didn't create something... History is on Mustaines side as he proved to be the source of all the great ideas till this day whilst Metallica has seemed lost since 92.

Metallica lost me in 88', still dug the riffs Dave was throwin out after then... So honestly I think Dave had alot of influence on Metallica's early material... And even though Cliff liked to throw shade Daves direction after they kicked him out, I think Dave and Cliff were pretty tight given they were both intellectual type thinkers and James and Lars were namely stoners so I think Dave had some influence on Cliff and vice versa...

Yea they gave him credits for his few contributions and he's received royalties since day 1 as he should and used those royalties to fund his band.

@@bungalowbill3409He really didn't, they all emulated the same proto thrash, speed metal and NWOBHM bands. I don't think Dave had many great riffs after Rust in peace anyway but James a stoner?? He was definitely a heavy drinker but cliff was the stoner.

@bungalowbill3409 Yeah I'm the same after 89 I really don't care for their stuff. When they moved away from Mustaines influences and more into Lars and James influences the band just no longer had that strip running though it. Cliff was another loss to the core songwriting that created RIP/MOP. Dave was always the Thrash guy.. He's the one that continued on pioneering the genre long after Metallica jumped on the radio train.. Even when Megadeth tried it's hand at more radio friendly stuff it was done in a way to maintain that Megadeth sound.. Dubbing it 'Thrash-Pop'. Before returning full force to Thrash and heavy metal.. Metallica have just struggled the whole time to get back to the roots because the roots were in Mustaines sound that he was developing and they continued for a few years 'riffing' on his ideas and being pushed by him and Megadeths new releases.. When they ran out of his material and no longer had him around to provide these core ideas they only had their own.. Now they've done perfectly well on those ideas.. But to us Thrash guys. It's not what we want.. We want those first 4 albums sound and structure back. Metallica just done know how to get there again.. So they meander around lost sounding on new albums always playing it safe with a radio focus. Megadeth on the other hand is dropping easily it's best work in 20 years if not longer right now and is about to drop another new album in about a years time. Mustaine and Megadeths legacy will be longevity and determination.. Metallica will be an explosive beginning and a fizzled coasting on past success for decades.

@@PhantomDeth Mustaines influence? Wow you really to expand your musical horizons its so narrow. Not only was Metallica always led by James and Lars musically and we're the core writing team on every album except a portion of kill em all, but to say It was Mustaines Influence and sound? Neither band was ever original and it was never any of there sound but especially not Dave's, to say the roots were in Mustaines sound is factually incorrectz they were toying with that sound before they knew him. Neither cliff or Dave wrote that much, Hammett wrote more and his credentials in Exodus proceed James and Daves. Dave did really great in Megadeth but neither band has exactly done anything groundbreaking for a long time and both live on there laurels with some great stuff here and there. Thrash pop? Metallica will fizzle out? I don't know where to start, clearly a huge Megadeth fan but some of this is just bizarre
