Whew, the universe was testing you two last month... but congrats on all the exciting new changes!! 🥰 Also, I think it's very refreshing to see someone choosing not to read a book when you know you are not in the right headspace to give it the attention it deserves, we need to normalize that more. And oooh I really need to read Happy Place already! As well as more Austen, it's been too long. My standouts of September were Hell of a Witch by Rachel Aaron and Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan 🤩

I’m so sorry for your loss of Winslow. I also lost my cat in October, and it’s been so hard. 😢 I feel called out because I did say Happy Place had miscommunication. Lack of communication is more accurate. 😅 The Spear Cuts Through water does have a lot going on! Good idea to put that one on pause until you all feel the time is right. Congratulationson the new jobs and college application! ❤

Really sad to hear about Winslow. That being said, congrats on the new lifepaths! Best of luck you two! Also, Slaine is fantastic. You really can't go wrong with Simon Bisley. Of all the things that could have introduced me to Bisley as a kid, it was Danzig's album cover (6:66 Satan's Child). Underrated album, honestly.

I am so sorry for your loss of Winslow. He looked like he was the best boy. 💔 You pre-DNF’d The Spear Cuts Through Water?! I- am- aghast! 🤣 Redshirts sounds so intriguing. I need to not be adding things to my TBR. Haha! I am to blame, for sure. I either dust or DNF. There is no in-between. 😅 Yaaaas, My Little Red Pony! I’m so glad that you loved it! Book Lovers next?! Don’t tell BookTube, but I’m glad that you both read Persuasion over The Spear Cuts Through Water. Persuasion is more cathartic for me. (The other guy was Captain Benwick.) I completely agree that all of Austen’s novels are deceptively different from one another! The last two stories in Enriquez’s collection terrify me just thinking about them. So, of course, I can’t wait to read Our Share of Night. 🤣 That is such a tiny edition of Perfume! It’s my book of the month as well (tied with The King of Elfland’s Daughter by Lord Dunsany). I am honored that and overjoyed that you loved your Month Of reads! Nice! Month Of Merphy reads are going to be interesting. I might try reading Annihilation (finally) whenever you announce it!

Congrats on the jobs and studies! I more than understand the unsettling feeling since I’ve been experiencing it too, and hope it all ‘calms down' for you. As for books, I love Persuasion (Northanger Abbey is Hilarious!), and Perfume (read it in the 80s in French and then in the 90s in English - both brilliant - which I could experience the original German). Tempted by Enriquez but I’m usually rubbish at horror...

I definitely didn’t have as crazy September as you did. I did have a good reading month. I read Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes, The Magicians by Lev Grossman and Lightlark by Alex Aster. I just picked up Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb to read in October and Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell.

"The Spear Cuts Through Water" has been recently translated in italian, with a totally different title, and I will read it soon. Probably after I'll finish "Forge of Darkness" by Steven Erikson. "Slàine" is fenomenal, I've read it many years ago for the first time and periodically I reread it, mainly for the art. Congratulations for the new jobs.

Carlos, for your American series can I recommend Nobody´s Fool by Richard Russo. I read Lonesome Dove based on your recommendation and, although not a western, Nobody´s Fool gave me the same sense of exploring an American culture through beautifully written characters. Also I listened to it on Audible and the narration is amazing.

Sounds like y'all had a very busy month. Babylon's Ashes is the most forgettable book in the Expanse series. I know this because I forgot it existed and I forgot the plot until I looked it up while watching this video 😂. If you want another Scalzi book in the same vein as Red Shirts I recommend Agent to the Stars. The premise is that aliens have come to earth and hire a Hollywood agent so their reveal doesn't make the world go crazy. Invisible Doctrine was really good. I need to read Agatha Christie. I might start with that one. I picked up some nice Agatha Christie hardcovers recently. Happy Place is great! Great wrap up! Evie knows my thoughts on The Spear Cuts Through Water and she made me explain myself in further detail in DMs 😂

Hahaha that makes me feel better about Babylon's Ashes! I'll make note of that Scalzi.. cheers man! Hopefully we'll be around more often now towards the end of the year.. the new job is a lot more flexible.. we can get back to some of those reads we have in mind. C

Steinback is awesome! Carlos, I can highly recommend checking out the «Thorgal» Comic by Belgian writer Jean Van Hamme and Polish graphic artist Grzegorz Rosiński (Fantasy inspired by Norse mythology, the legend of Atlantis and Ancient Astronauts). as well as the «Corum» books by Michael Moorcock! In September I read three Rosemary Sutcliffe novels: 2 YA Historical Fiction Novels, «The Silver Branch» & «The Lantern Bearers» (set in Ancient Britain during the Late Roman and the Roman Withdrawal & Saxon Invasions, respectively) and an Arthurian Historical Fiction novel, «Sword at Sunset», all loosely connectied to each other following a family over generations, with the POV character of «The Lantern Bearers» as a mentor figure and his son one of Arthur’s companions in «Sword at Sunset». I also finished «Sword in the Storm» («Rigante» series #1) by David Gemmell (S&S/Heroic Fantasy, inspired by Celtic Britain and the Roman Invasions) and «The Eternal Champion» by Michael Moorcock (Multiverse S&S/(Anti-?)Heroic Fantasy). Just finished «Lustrum» (US: «Conspirata», «Cicero»-Trilogy #2) by Robert Harris (Historical Fiction about the Roman Statesman), that one or «Sword in the Storm» might be my Book of the Month! Cheers!

Sláine ❤ I need to get back to some 2000AD. I really enjoyed Redshirts. I too DNFed Spear Can't Cut the Turf, though tbf I was also reading Wurts at the time. A bad move? Yes, it was bad but in my defence I didn't pay attention to discourse around spear at the time 😂 Now I'm worried Yolanda won't like Lies of Locke Lamora 😅 In September I've read: *DC Comics* Green Lantern: Secret Origin (re-read) Written by Geoff Johns | Art by Ivan Reis *Fantasy* Dunk & Egg 1: The Hedge Knight (re-read) - I was kinda underwhelmed on my first read, but on re-read I loved it. Rain Wild Chronicles 2: Dragon Haven Rain Wild Chronicles 3: City of Dragons Rain Wild Chronicles 4: Blood of Dragons - 1st 3rd of Dragon Haven was kinda rough but it really picked up after that. Overall it is my least favourite subseries of RotE, though I'd read it again. Fitz & Fool 1: Fool's Assassin - Book of the Month! Loved the Gothic atmosphere throughout and exploring the later years Fitz's life. My only complaint, is that there isn't enough of the Fool. *Image Comics* Criminal 1: Coward Written by Ed Brubaker | Art by Sean Philips - Read in a sitting! It's a series I'd been curious about for years. *Marvel Comics* Astonishing X-Men Complete Collection 1 Written by Joss Whedon | Art by Sean Cassaday Daredevil 1: Hell Breaks Loose Written by Saladin Ahmed | Art by Aaron Kuder - Thoroughly enjoyed this. Waiting for the next trade to come down a little in price. Moon Knight 1: The Midnight Mission Written by Jed McKay | Art by Alessandro Cappuccio - Love me some Moon Knight. *Mystery* Mystic River / Dennis Lehane - One of my favourites of the year! So far in October I've finished: *Short Fiction* Hell is the Absence of God / Ted Chiang - I'm not a religious or spiritual person but gave me a lot to think about. As for what I'm currently reading: *Comics* Ultimate Spider-man 1: Married with Children Written by Jonathan Hickman | Art by Marco Checchetto *Fantasy* Memory, Sorrow & Thorn 2: Stone of Farewell - I'm loving this series more and more. Feels like a blending of GRRM and Hobb. Very clearly a loving response to LotR, I enjoyed LotR but I'm liking this better.
