The same thing happened to me. I didn't know the song so I looked it up. I thought it was a newer song or made for the movie but it's totally period. I've been listening to it every day since I saw it. I just happened to watch the movie just surfing through a "Mystery" category then until half way I wondered why "Mystery" then it got dark. Great cinematography. I love to see nostalgia depicted with todays tech. Not a bad movie at all. 😎

The way the lyrics of the song fit what's happening to Sandie, is so amazing. Sandie being a "puppet on strings". "Just whose pulling the strings" Jack and all the other men who take advantage of her. "I'm all tied up in you but where's it leading me to" How Jack has her and is leading her down a dark path that she's unable to get out of. Also interesting (probably unintentional) how in order for Sandie to get out she has to kill Jack and all the other men, "cutting her strings"

I think the standard premise is that once you become a prostitute under a pimp it could be life-threatening to leave. And that was probably demonstrated when you see him try to kill her and she defends herself and winds up killing him. So I think on three levels it's once you're in that life it's very hard to get out of because pimps consider you their property and the next would be having to survive. we don't know how she would have money to live. Plus now she had the stigma of doing what she did and if she did try to become famous with another agent or even get a regular job there's a good chance she would be found out for what she had done and be ostracized. It's a hard life to get out of once you're in it.

Edgar Wright loves doing this sort of thing in his films, having a sequence early on that tells you how the plots going to go. In Baby Driver, there’s a scene where the protagonist flips through TV channels and every line he hears gets used again later in the film.

As a gal that is kind of socially awkward like Eloise as I can totally understand why she is so struck by the free-spirited and confident Sandie. As they all say you are naturally attracted to people with qualities you don't have. Thus I can also understand the female rage that makes Eloise looks away with disgust when she sees a fellow woman (and one she admires) being forced into this.

This scene is so brilliant. I wonder if the character was named Sandie after the artist who recorded the song... Eloise's disillusionment is palpable. Sandie performs but loathes the direction her career is going in. And the sequence that happens after this scene is so nail-bitingly good...

U know what I find curious, that in this scene we can obviously tell she's not happy doing that, this is not something she wants to be doing, yet we are quick to call any female artist "empowered" for doing basically the same thing, when many of them don't want to be doing it either, all those disgusting men that you see clapping there and "pulling the strings" are still here in 2022, you just don't see them cause the internet is how things get showcased nowadays.

... The difference is the profit. Nowadays women can negotiate for actually profiting off showing off their bodies, find pride and joy in doing so. Previously they were total commodities, to be used and discarded, the frowned upon by the rest of the society. I'm not saying that nowadays there is no shady men pulling the strings, but saying that women don't find actual empowerment and pride in their work is quite gross.

There are two good German poems about how men and women treat each other poorly. The Rosebud and The Violet, I’d encourage anyone here who is disheartened to read them. In the rosebud a boy comes along and plucks rosebud against her will, in the violet a girl comes along not noticing him and his true feelings for her, she frolicks along trampling him underfoot. Such a human way to consider sexual assault or abuse of young girls or the callousness with which human nature throws away young male life. Treat people well and never stop believing in love my friends. God is love.

I feel the need to point out to the people disagreeing with me here that when Jack made out with sandie/ellie all Ellie could do was stare at sandie the whole time which is- not the most hetro behaviour There’s also a lot of rainbow/lgbt related stuff in the bg of Ellie’s scenes especially when she’s feeling strong emotionally or making a decision that furthers the story (ahem- the giant neon glowing rainbow sign when she takes John home) and she’s just so so bisexual

@dabdabthethird2410 don't disagree with you but when making out with Jack I think Ellie was experiencing it from Sadie's point of view, since she also got hickeys from him the day after. And when dancing we can see her taking Sadie's place..

I should have known or I guess we all should have known from that 1 scene The theme of this film capitalizes Basically the manipulation and the slavery of women. Eloise like most young girls Her age was fascinated and enthralled with the glamor the glitz and the excitement of London UNFORTUNATELY it ALSO showed her the uglenus and The manipulation of one girl Her age a long time ago that manifested into horror and degradation. Eloise didn't know until later that the horror and degradation that she thought came from the men in actually came from the woman who granted her a place to live..
