One contrast that I’ve theorised that I love is when we meet Sandie first, she’s wearing something that’s deemed more poised and floaty showing how she’s a free spirit, and her dancing is very neat. In this scene we see her in more tightened clothing, I like to think it’s to show how Jack has gotten his hold on her. And her dancing is more erratic and all over the place, just showing how she’s lost her control and freedom over the situation at hand.

I understand why Edgar say that he thinks it is important for Thomasin and Anya to be on the same set because the whole point is their connection. Anya is the focus here, but the way that Eloise looks on sadly when she saw a once confident and free-spirited girl slowly descends to madness is equally important in this scene.

I did a brief stint as a waitress at a club like this, only a fraction of the girls did it willinging because they enjoyed the cash-rich high-life, all the others had no choice. Most girls only planned on "partying" for a few months to make just enough for a certain goal, like making a down payment on a house, paying for a medical bill, student loans...etc. Then they get trapped by their pimps and johns with drugs, gambling debts, shark loans, and abuse. They lead an f-ed up lifestyle, but amazingly, most of those girls are still really decent compassionate people deep inside.

The constant push is that you have to be willing to 'work your way up' and all the girls do it. He even tells her this at one point - "what makes you so special". The thought is that you've already put in suffering and the carrot is dangled (like in the audition) that this is just temporary (and even common/expected in the industry), so you don't want to give up your assumed place on the ladder to go back to nothing. You always feel like you're "almost there" or on verge of a breakthrough. And through it all, you start to become progressively more broken (and numb), so it becomes easier in a way. Kind of similar to why people stay in abusive relationships - a lot of time/effort already put in and you think eventually things will change. And of course, they don't. Types like Weinstein, Roger Ailes and the whole casting couch phenomena know how to work the psychological pressure and play to their benefit.
