I loved the first half of this film however I felt the second half was much weaker and the reveal at the end felt rushed and left a lot of unanswered questions, e.g. (as vague as possible) how did "they" manage to get away with that all these years? Why did "they" feel the need to reveal themselves to the protagonist when it's clear the police thought she was a bit nuts and had no evidence? Why did that character act so damn vague and cryptic when it turns out they weren't the person we thought they were, would have made a lot more sense to impart your knowledge of events when someone accuses you of murder rather than act all weird and cryptic. I do agree that we need more original and different films like this however we cannot overlook criticisms just because a film is different and original. I feel this would have been much better as a straight up mystery thriller and scrap the horror elements/cliches. But to be fair, that first half was so damn good.

@RoyKhn2 жыл бұрын
At it's core, it IS a ghost story... The fact that the film isn't what you want it to be isn't a flaw... The first five minutes let's you know it's a ghost story. She sees her mom's spirit, and a couple of clues show us that it's not a vision. First, her mom's ghost let's her know "good news are coming", and in fact, she gets the letter of acceptance. Second, the ghost of her mom doesn't go with her to London. It's not a vision that follows her around. She's literally a ghost that lives in that house. (Although she does travel to London with her grandma in the end, which I thought was a nice touch). I really liked the third act, as it is a very effective ghost sorry, both with metaphorical ghost of memories of past trauma, and literal ghost. I think people are so jaded with shitty jump scares and CGI ghosts, that they can't appreciate when they are well used in a movie.

@estebanmedina15482 жыл бұрын
The movie is unique but it definitely isn’t perfect. I agree that the “horror” part worked more as the fact that she couldn’t escape the other woman’s life than the weird ghost. The ghost of the men she killed were really, really cheesy, really overplayed and overused. I think that the first time or two that they were used it worked well but after that, it starts to just negatively impact the movie because the third act just devolves into her running away from ghost that just keep grabbing her. I think the ending overall would probably prevent me from seeing the movie again as it started taking me out of the movie, especially because some of those scenes start to include blank sets, the main plot gets lost for a moment, and it’s just not creepy or scary after the first few times. I also think they missed some opportunities, specifically when they insinuate that the dreams the main character has are hurting her in real life. She gets a cut that the girl in the dream gets but then they never touch on it again. I feel like her believing she was going to die would have created such an enhanced tension to her trying not to fall asleep. The rotten tomatoes score is a 75%, which i think is actually accurate considering the schlock the third act is.

He said he didn’t understand why some critics didn’t like the movie and he largely forgives and glosses over just how bad the third act and some of the choices are in comparison with the rest of the movie. I was emphasizing and elaborating on those points. The ghost aren’t JUST overused, they show up repeatedly creating the same exact scene where she runs, they grab her, she gets away. 75% is a big stretch to say was said, more like 20% if you want to discount any elaboration and specification as adding something to the convo.

Spot on review. I don’t remember the last time I was so engrossed in a new film and most of it is all down to Eloise, the aesthetic and also the influences from raging from the likes of giallos from Dario Argento to the psychological thrillers of films like Carnival of Souls and the Roman Polanski film Repulsion. Right from the get go I was engrossed and its all down to Eloise, who is someone I identified with since the wide eyed nostalgia she possesses was akin to what I had for the 80s. As a born Londoner, I knew Soho when it was on its last gasp of seediness in the 90s due to the fact I used to go to school there and looking back now the area for me was a conflict. It was a mixture of trendy London with the seedy underbelly, a place where the streets housed film production offices and bars and restaurants, and shared its space with strip joints and ‘model studios’. The place has history and character that is sadly being gentrified, but I’m sad to say its famous qualities was built on the exploitation of women and that should not be forgotten.

As for the film taking its time with building the narrative, I found it incredibly rushed and messy. And then there’s the finale which does try to explain EVERYTHING, and comes off as silly and lacking in impact, not to mention those awfully forced twists. McKenzie and Taylor-Joy are great though, and the film does look nice (though Wright certainly has more visually ambitious films). Matt Smith needed more to do. So overall, I really wasn’t a fan of this. I understand the critics for once.

As a woman, I was blinking back tears the entire second act of the film. During the first act felt like I was Eloise. I could relate to her so much and I was sucked in. The transition scene to the 60s had me in awe, and then when the ball dropped in the second act I could barely hold back my tears. I felt one of the horrors of history were finally being seen, how women were viewed and treated only 60 years ago. Even when the film goes a little balls to the wall in the third act I’m willing to forgive it for the story that it told.

I was surprised by how much I loved this movie, and how much it actually terrified me but in a different way than I expected it to! While the ghosts with the occasional jumpscares were scary, it was the thought that you can't escape your past and no matter how hard you try to run away from it, it will catch up to you and sometimes the past is too horrible to let it near you. *Spoilers here* Poor Sandy having to go her entire live with those ghosts and the terrible things she had to go through just to have a shot at her dream was the most terrifying thing to me, that happening to someone so young, vulnerable and so full of live! That really scared me, more what the ghosts meant and less the ghosts themselves
@caleblim68902 жыл бұрын
The first two acts were magnificent, then the writing falls over itself towards the end to make a more generic ending, leaving a lot of details feeling like they were just there *for* the story, not as *part* of the story. That kind of undermined quite a bit of the script in it’s entirety when you look back on it afterwards. Things were left to be mysterious more for convenience than for atmosphere, and then there’s the overuse of certain overtly “horror” cliches. Apart from that, I found it a joy to watch, it drew me along on a really awesome journey which included some very chilling confrontations of nostalgia and ambition, and resolved itself decently enough, especially since Taylor-Joy and McKensie absolutely bring their all, and that’s what really makes the movie great.

And the twists at the end. I had called them early on, but I was praying that I was wrong. The movie didn't need those twists. It didn't need the ghosts. Nothing was at gut-wrenchingly scary as Elouise on her bed, trapped in a nightmare, as 4-5 men slowly crept closer to her to re-enact a sex crime that we knew had already happened. However, as much as the movie dropped the ball (and it dropped it pretty hard imo) I still don't regret seeing it. Unfortunately, neither is "Antlers." And that movie has Guillermo del Toro producing it. When I saw it on a Sunday evening, was literally just me and one other person. Personally, I was more interested in Antlers than Soho but still sucks to see these movies getting burned due to a pandemic, a reluctant audience demographic staying home, and other demographics choosing to support a Halloween Kills/established IP property. Dunno if you saw Antlers, but would love to hear your thoughts. Was a solid 3/5 for me due to amazing atmosphere, creature design, gore, grounded level of terror and good performances. Appreciated the film took its time to cook up the suspense as well, but it's got its faults, and it's quite a slow burn horror that's very dark in terms of themes and overall tone which isn't what a lot of people are looking for right now, but it's definitely the kind of horror film I'd love to make and am currently writing. I love all-in characters like John; ready to ride or die without much explanation from Ellie. I thought the ghosts of the “John’s” were truly frightening in a way I had not seen before in terms of the CGI used to depict them as haunting spirits. I did not know Wright had done Shawn of the Dead, but anyone that can turn a comedy like that, can do some damage in horror and did just that:). This movie has one of the weridest scripts I have ever seen. The main villain ends up being the good guy. Like even the main protagonist agrees with her decision to kill all those men, and agrees they deserved it. And to be clear, I do think Anya's character was a victim. But I mean purely in terms of a tradtional movie script/structure, it's so strange to have all this lead up to your villain only to reveal in the last 10% of the film that the villain is actually the good guy. And to use a 20 seocond montage to try make us feel empahty for them to justify their actions. It felt clumsy. It's even more bizarre when just 10 minutes before, its revealed that the main character accidentally killed an innocent old man who she thought was Jack. Except he wasn't Jack. I'm not sure if the flashbacks implied that the cop slept with Anya's character (sinec he was at the club and was apart of the what is your name sweetheart montage). But they then have a lengthy scene where the police officer tries to help her out, and tries to convince her to get out of the life because she deserves better. So the main character accidentally killing him - then gets shrugged off with an "oops" - only to reveal Anya's character is the real killer. BUT then the film goes - well she is actually a good person, and those killings were justified. And oh btw that old cop who was killed because of mistaken identitiy - ah who cares about him. Its just such a weird ending. I don't know if I'm doing a good job explainign why I find this odd. Again, I think it has to do wtih the structure of the film.

Different doesn’t mean good, the movie was good up to a certain point when you find out who’s who, I’m not gonna say it because I don’t wanna potentially spoil it for someone, but the ending and the reveal was predictable and felt shoehorned in, the sudden turn to good in the very end is also very “bleh”. Throughout the movie Eloise is haunted by these thing the director uses as something to scare us and her but it grows old far too quick, and at the end they change into something else which completely destroys their actions and purpose before the reveal, movie is a 6/10

First, love Edgar Wright. I appreciate him as a filmmaker and I'm glad he's able to make the movies he wants to make. However... sometimes great filmmakers misfire, and I feel like people are letting him off the hook with this one because of how slickly shot it is and the underlying message. The good: I do like how it held back information. And the parts in the 60s were fantastic. Most of the lead performances were great. Also, great soundtrack. The bad: The secondary performances bordered on cartoonish. The bad "girl" at the fashion school was one of the most transparently and gleefully evil bitches I've seen. NOBODY like that exists. Also, there were tons of nonsensical misdirections that were only put in place to serve a "twist"... which never needed to be a twist. Like the old guy's entire story. So when things started to get revealed, the story felt clumsy. And that reveal with the letter? And what eventually happened to the old guy? The ugly: From a character and story standpoint, the general "present day" stuff was really, really weak. I never believed that Eloise was actually going to school, the stuff with the mom and the mental illness seemed way too on the nose, and the love interest was way too forgiving of Eloise's wild mood swings. Summing up: We can find fucked up things about any time and place, and I respect the time we're in and wanting to call attention to those themes. That's clearly what this film is about... but that line at the end... where there's essentially absolution for all of those crimes. I mean... no. Sorry. Swinging in the complete opposite direction just felt really, really wrong.

The old "psychic solves a murder" movie has been done a LOT better than this--and I'd go so far as to say this is a lousy effort. All style, very little substance. The worst part is that the "twist" is falling back on the 'ole unreliable narrator shtick in the most disingenuous way. Did we get any clues whatsoever through the two hours of movie that Eloise was an unreliable narrator? Nope. Yet we get a twist where she has psychically seen the exact OPPOSITE of what happened which puts her in danger. WTF? That's not even a twist; it's ridiculous. I would not recommend this film--and definitely not to horror fans as there was ZERO horror.

Got to agree, absolutely loved this film. The cinematography, the soundtrack, and the acting were all brilliant. And I loved how it was a different story to so many that have been repeated over and over.

I absolutely didn’t know what this movie was really about and I straight up thought it was a wholesome story in the beginning. Boy was I wrong. I love this movie for how it tricked me.

The setting reels you in so much you forget it is actually a horror until it is too late

Sorry I just watched this film and I wanted to hear how its been reviewed. I think the reason people might criticize this film is that its tone is just all over the place and, as you pointed out, its not scary. The dead horse of 'putting a character who seems to be having a mental breakdown in social situations where it would be bad to have a mental breakdown' is flogged beyond belief: She can't keep it together on her first night, she is wrapped in blankets at her first party, she can't say present properly a her first day in uni. She has a breakdown in the library, in her studio and at a halloween party. So as an audience, yeah we feel tense. It's hard to watch someone constantly having a meltdown in public. The lame-o CGI ghosts actually add brevity to these situations and only undercut the overall goal of freaking us out. The ultimate conclusion makes no sense in terms of the film's given logic. Dont want to spoil the end for anyone but the identity of Anya Taylor Joy's character doesn't bear much scrutiny. Like how is she even present in Eloise's visions? In the end the film is all over the place and if you want to watch a teenage girl having a psychic-powers-based series of meltdowns as she tries to fit into a new university environment you should watch Thelma instead.
