@@SPFLDAnglerNot all museums have ones you can sit in. At the Boeing Museum of Flight in Renton, WA for example there is an A model (I forgot the squadron number) but it was a Jolly Roger used in The Final Countdown. CDR Chierici, Sir, I came across you and Meagan on the Tomcast, episode 20. What a terrific episode! It was from there that I wound up here. I learned a lot just listening to, and watching this entirely too short clip. I am a proud F-14A maintainer who was in the fleet from '82-'86, then two years reserve. I have carried the lessons I learned in those days well into my professional career post-navy. I want to thank you, and all of the people I've ever served with, for teaching me so many very valuable things, and to remind me of where I came from professionally. I appreciate it.

Had the pleasure of spending time at Fallon back in the sixties when the Navy used it to practice nuclear weapons delivery (loft bombing). I was an Aviation Electronics Technician and Plane Captain. The mosquitoes were nasty there. They were so big that one day we accidently refueled one thinking it was an A4-D Skyhawk. The pilots were Gods and I wanted to be one.

Gen. Yeager was said to have claimed there was no such thing as "the right stuff," or that he couldn't define it. But consider this...from my limited flying experience, and watching flying and talking to professional pilots (my father included) and listening to these guys, it seems to me that "the right stuff" is simply the ability to strap on a machine like the F-5 and become one with the machine. If you have the right stuff, the gap in achieving this oneness closes to a certain point. These guys exhibit this quality, and to a degree, race car drivers have it too, but they don't operate in a three-axis world. As one who very much respects professional pilots, and envy's them too, it's good to see the respect they have for their profession, and those who have gone before them. Godspeed, Gentlemen!

It’s really amazing - everyone of those dudes was wearing a Top Gun patch. As a reserve squadron they can hire who they want. Same for the Omars at Oceana. I think I read that when the Hunters VFA201 went on their historic cruise in 2003 all but three of the pilots were FWS grads. That’s nuts. It’s really not an exaggeration when that one guy says these are the best fighter pilots in the world.

Old school pilots...they wear the parachute out to the aircraft. For the CO as a Captain kind of a sad day. Giving up a profession that is carved in blood, training, and experience. Your stuck with either staff desk jobs, possibly Airwing or Aircraft Carrier CO. Whatever job it is the day to day flying is gone. You might get some time for currency and training but for the most part everyday flying is gone. Hope he had fun and moves on to flag rank or retires as they say....going out on top. Fair Winds and Following Seas!!
