Pedro really owned this episode man. That scene where he's emotionally pleading for Tommy to take Ellie to the fire flies because he's afraid of getting Ellie killed if he took her himself was heartbreaking beautiful. I feel like this was better than the game's version where he aggressively told Tommy to take Ellie, and he shoved Tommy for saying no because the show's version had more emotional depth. Give Pedro all the awards lol.

Pedro definitely gives depth and adds another dimension to Joel, sharing his weaknesses, fears and apprehension. To some, this is not masculine, but as a father, husband and leader, I find it refreshing that a man can become vulnerable and transparent about his fears and inadequacy as a parent and protector.

This episode was some of the best cinematography I've seen in a long time. The silhouettes on the horse were breath taking and Joel admitting that he's weaker was truly heart breaking. Sally Ride was *not* the first woman in space. She was the first _American_ woman in space (in 1983). (Valentina Tereshkova went into space as a cosmonaut in 1963.) It was also interesting that Sally Ride was either gay or bisexual, having a female partner at the end of her life in the late-80s and early-90s, so in that regard a bit more like Ellie from the games (and we will see oif that remains true of Ellie in the show).

I love how this show is different from any other zombie show or movie in that it doesn’t linger on the horror and violence. I liked the small detail when Ellie sees the blackboard with Sarahs name and the name of Marias son Kevin on it. It shows that Tommy didnt just forget/pushed away the memory of Sarah, but he truly griefed for her. He and Maria have a prominent display of both children in their daily life, but they could move on unlike Joel. While Sarah was "just" Tommys niece we see Maria also dealt with her grief for her son in a much healthier way than Joel ever could.

Great analysis as always. One thing tho: when Joel is talking about contractors, and he says, “everyone always loved contractors”… pretty sure that’s not him feeling good about himself. That’s him telling a little lie/joke, and enjoying that she won’t understand it. Because (and I’m sure contractors will back this up), more often than not, people hate contractors, especially when they don’t do their job (or they half-ass it) and expect full payment, or when the people contracting them try to stiff them when they do a good job and fulfill the terms of the contract. I’m gonna watch again, but I’m pretty sure that Joel even smiles when he says it, knowing that Ellie can’t see the smile (since she’s behind him).

Two observations about last episode: - It never came to me that Joel gets wounded right after he starts to get soft with Ellie. Even if Joel is a protector, he never protected anyone actually "weak" after losing Sarah. Tess and Tommy were capable fighters, they didn't need Joel the same way Sarah (and even Ellie) needed him. I might add that there's a difference between protecting and looking after someone you care, as the latter involves trust. - When Joel mentioned his dream about having a ranch and raising sheep, it reminded me that Ellie and Dina had a ranch with sheep after they came back to Jackson and Dina had her baby. If they make a season 2, Joel's dream would become true through Ellie.

When Ellie gets the Diva cup she’s not “playing” with it. She’s trying out how it is supposed to be inserted, which is how it is shown in the pamphlet it came with. I’m very happy that the show addresses such a taboo topic that video games and most shows usually would never mention. Just because there is an apocalypse it doesn’t mean that they’re isn’t a need for such products and for positive influences that help teens navigate their way through it. Period poverty is a very real thing and period stigma creates a lot of problems in the real world. So awareness and good information are very important.

FYI Ellie is not "playing" with the Divacup as a demonstration of her childishness. The folding and popping out that she does is literally how you use it. She's reading the instructions and following them as she reads - hardly childish playing. As a champion for more environmentally friendly approaches to feminine hygiene in general, I loved this little scene. Her reaction is perfect as well... initially "gross" but quickly followed by "... cool." And when you think about a post apocalyptic world, with limited resources, in true practical terms, dealing with monthly bleeding would be a major issue for nearly half of the remaining humans. Reusable options like the Divacup are absolutely part of that picture, and I really appreciated that the show went there.

25:50 in TLOU Part 2, the song isn’t actually written for Ellie by Joel, the songs called Future Days by Pearl Jam and it makes sense that Joel would remember it cause he’s a fan of that kind of music in game and Lightning Bolt, the album the song is off of, was released in early 2013 (months before the outbreak happens in the game). They’re going to have to write a new song or pick another song that has the same themes as Future Days for the tv series since the outbreak in the series happened in 2003

Peace Lilys are also good air purifiers. NASA are planning on using them in any future trip to Mars to help purify the atmosphere on the ship. I think that there is symbolism in why they are there.

Bella physically closing the distance between her and Pedro in that "I'm not her" scene ... that was a very nice bit of blocking. They are just knocking this show out of the park. By the way, I've enjoyed your breakdowns and seeing what things you pick up on compared to, say, Erik Voss. Often you're both picking up on the same artistic choices, but every so often you see different things (or see the same things differently), and that's how you know how much craft they're putting in the details. i didnt like how joel was stabbed this episode because inorder to follow the same story as the game he had to remove the piece of the bat which makes absolutely no sense because someone of joels knowledge and survival skills shouldve well known to leave what youve been stabbed with as to not bleed out as fast which made him look kinda stupid imo, but in the game where he instead fell on a piece of rebar which obivously cant be moved/carried around actually made sense as to why joel started bleeding out faster. small minor gripe that annoyed me/confused me but wow what an espiode. the show just does not let down.

Yes, it was great to see Graham Greene but it was EVEN BETTER to see Elaine Miles playing his wife in this episode. For half a decade she was always an absolute scene-stealer as the very wise, but not particularly talkative, receptionist on 'Northern Exposure.' Her character on Northern Exposure was named Marilyn, very similar to Greene's character's name (Marlon) here.

The couple in the cabin at the beginning were both in Northern Exposure. And using the town of Canmore Alberta as the set for Jackson reminded me of using Roslyn WA as the set for the fictional town of Cicely AK. The casting in particular seems like a nod. In much the same way Adam Arkin (also in Northern Exposure) was cast in the movie Pig. Nick Cage plays a very similar role to "Adam" in Northern Exposure; a chef who has left the culinary world to live alone in the woods. I'm getting big PNW vibes from The Last of Us and won't be surprised if there are more nods to classic northwest tv shows like X-Files and Twin Peaks. Especially because we know we're headed to Seattle in season 2

Yeah, but with him being as old as he is he should know that no matter what age you are you can still experience loss and understand that feeling. Ellie lost her mom during childbirth. She lost Riley. They both lose Tess. They both know what loss is.
