Building Wilda

Күн бұрын

In this episode of Building Wilda, we resume the sanding & spot filling activities in the salon, galley and the middle room on the port side. This is the last area that is about to receive its share of shiny top coat. But first we have to identify and mark all the imperfections, fill them with either an epoxy filler or with a car body filler, depending on how large the area is and then we sand to even out the surfaces.
Wilda is a Schionning Wilderness 1340 sailing catamaran. She is being finished in a shed outside Melbourne. Wilda will be powered by the Sun, the Wind and the Sea...

While staying with my wife in the hospital I have binge watched from the beginning and given you a bunch of likes as I worked my way to present time. You guys are doing a great job. I would like to learn a little more about your education/career background if you can fit it into a future episode.

Wow! now that's an achievement! Well done and thanks for encouraging us! We are trying to find the correct balance between boatwork and rest and family visits. Being foreigners in Australia helps sometimes as we need to take visa breaks. So, yes, we're trying to stay fit as well

Much thanks to Steve and Chris for helping out. Can't pin the all those blotches. Neither masking the repetition, pain, soreness and fatigue. Stoked for another round of interior top coat painting. What's our video series timeline difference - 3 mths? - New Year's to Mid March? Always enjoyed the outside, underside color contrast - gray over red/orange?

Thanks for your comment, as usual! We do have a timeline difference, it's nearly 3 months! So plenty of material and more videos coming up! Yes, it's grey over orange (however, due to the reduced light in the shed, sometimes the orange looks red, we're looking forward to seeing it in the sunshine, out on the water)!

I would remove the escape hatches and fill in with fiberglass. If you were to turtle it than you would have an air tight upside down boat. As soon as you open one of the hatches, down she goes. It's much better to have as many things floating in the water as possible. If the boat were to flip over and you were forward in the hulls, which chances are you wouldn't be, than all you would need to do is walk to where the stairs are and take a short swim through the deck house and your good to go. Those escape hatches always tend to leak and are very expensive to replace. They will require a lot of maintenance.

Time will tell… You may be right…. Maybe there will come a time when we decide to make that change on the escape hatches, but first… we’d like to stick to the boat design and we need to go sailing to be able to find out what works and what doesn’t … for us! Until then we need to carefully focus on the finish line and the To Do list that we alreay have and is pretty long as it is anyway. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@buildingwilda

Changing things takes soo much longer than we would like, the hatches are staying. As for the leaking, yes... It is a potential problem that I hope we will avoid. The sinking bit though.... That's actually just not correct with this type of boat... It will float even if it were filled to the brim with water. Not, perhaps, comfortable, but being built out of all positively buoyant material, it simply won't sink even if it were broken into pieces. I really hope we don't ever end up even close to flipping the boat. That would be really scary. But if the worst would happen, the escape hatches are designed to be well over the water when flipped.. For now, we just hope they won't be leaky. /Axel and Rox

@@buildingwildaI understand about the buoyancy with the wood core and most likely sealed air tight crash compartments. What I'm trying to say is that when a boat flips upside down, you trap air and it won't fill up with water in the hulls. Once you remove that escape hatch, the boat will fill up with water because the air escapes. The two reasons why I don't like them is the maintenance issue and the fact that once opened, it's not air tight and your boat will have no air trapped inside. It will completely fill up with water and barely float.

You are not wrong. I hope we never need them. Escaping from a capsized cat will not be easy in any case. I've had some practice from helicopter escape. Difficult enough in a controlled environment. I would not want to need to try in my own boat 🤣🤔
@robertlaird6746

@@buildingwildaActually, I think it would be easy to escape from a capsized cat. All you would need to do is stay calm, cool and collective which is difficult to do under a situation like that but it's doable. Then swim through through the bridge deck house and your good to go. When sailing, one person is at the helm and the other is sleeping in the deck house. The only time that you would be down in the hulls would be if you were using the head or in the galley. I'd never install one on my boat and the Mumby Cyber 48 doesn't have one.
