eternal love story with the eternal theme where do i begin.....

I remembered about this movie and the main theme when my husband was first diagnosed with lymphoma. I feared we'd end up in a similar situation.... and unfortunately we did. Saddest story. I lost my beloved man just yesterday to aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma after months of battle. He was only 32, incredibly loving and caring guy. He was dying slowly and in much pain, suffocating. But we didn't lose our hope till the end despite bad prognosis. We did hope that high-dose chemo would work although at that time it couldn't help already. Relapses are very hard to treat. Once in an intensive care department he told me he's sorry for "bothering me so much", so I used this well-known phrase, and he agreed. ....This is such an enormous loss. Coping with it is the hardest. Worst thing ever. I hope non of you folks will ever experience anything close to that. Take care of your loved ones! Don't take for granted all the good you have!

Unfortunately I experienced the same thing as you after 6 years and 4 months of marriage. I saw my wife through six and one half years of dialysis, a kidney transplant , stage 3 ovarian cancer that went briefly into remission before recurring within 5 months. She finally passed away peacefully after vomiting from being placed on intravenous at New York Presbyterian Weil Cornelle Medical Center on 10/19/2019 at 2:50 AM after I woke up from a nap. The doctors gave me one hour with her before taking the body to the morgue. I am now 60 years old and my wife would have been 76 years old today. I have visited her 4 times at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge New Jersey and the stone says Forever In Your Husband's Heart. I put a rock on her grave each time I have been there and made donations to the Israel America Foundation in her memory. My niece has been instructed to bury me opposite her in the event I never get remarried. I am retiring from government service on 12/30/2022 because I have a low tolerance for stress that causes my gastritis to flare up with severe discomfort with care from my gastroenterologist. I manage the condition as best I can.

When i saw this in 1970 in Hollywood I saw it with the girl I married . At the end I cried I knew I could not live without her. We now have 10 children and 24 grandchildren and two on the way.Funny that a movie can make you see clearly what is important.

This scene is a heart-wrencher! Not only does it evoke emotional pain for the death of Jennie, but also for the irreparable father-son relationship between Oliver III and Oliver IV!
@12classics39 Жыл бұрын
I think the ending implies father and son will reconcile one day. That's what Jenny always wanted for Oliver. In the novel, the reconciliation is clear and Oliver breaks down crying and allows his father to comfort him as if he were a child again, which frankly would've been better than the film's ending where he just walks away and shuts his father out again.

Man, just as the music reaches that crescendo, he reaches the top of the bleachers and looks to the grey skies for an answer he'll never find. It's enough to crush the hardest of hearts. So nicely done. Then a couple years later in the comedy "What's Up Doc", Barbra Streisand's character utters that famous line, and the guy played by Ryan O'Neal ironically replies "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard". A nice bit of comic relief to honor one of cinema's saddest endings.

It's only a mild rebuke Oliver gives his father with that well-known quote about love - and his father instantly understands. Its mildness is because love is already the great leveller. Oliver was proud to have met Jenny. He's lets his father know that. Oliver's father's expression of regret here is so delicately done, and is in keeping with his personality. There is so much weight of meaning coming from such few words, the setting, the revolving door, the cold and snowy day. It's a scene from anybody's life today - and film-makers today need to learn from a scene like this. Well done the two actors here.

An absolute perfect ending to this heart-breaking story: The music works wonderfully to help set the mood and tone throughout the film but is especially effective at the end. The winter backdrop reflects the idea of tragedy and has connotations of cold, harsh and brutal referring to the circumstances at the end. The lifeless tree also reinforces this idea. The last line to his father sums up the main themes beautifully.

I'd say the saddest part of this "saddest movie of all time" was when Oliver walks out into the hospital hallway and Phil looks at him , his simple nod lets Phil know his daughter has passed, its then when Phil is so completely devastated that he says "I wish.....I wish I didn't promise Jenny I'd be strong for you" ...I'll always remember the entire theater loosing it at that point.

So sorry Dick, I've lived this story too, just lost my husband, 32, after a long battle, after so much hope. Read about Meryl Streep story with John Cazale, very sad but she found happiness after losing him. Here a quote from her: "I didn't get over it. I don't want to get over it. No matter what you do, the pain is always there in some recess of your mind, and it affects everything that happens afterwards. I think you can assimilate the pain and go on without making an obsession of it"

Oliver said to his father, Love means never having to say you are sorry. It means a person doesn't need to say he is sorry because he is forgiven by the person because he loves the person, you don't need to say you are sorry because it's okay because I love you, Oliver said to his father. His father doesn't need to say he's sorry because Oliver loves his father, what mistake his father did to Oliver is okay to Oliver Oliver loves his father, no need to say sorry because Oliver loves his father. Oliver learned this phrase from Jenny when Oliver and Jennifer quarreled. Oliver said to Jenny, I'm sorry, Jenny answered love means never having to say you're sorry because Jenny loves Oliver.

@PepsiGurl93 That's the whole point of this last scene. They have reconciled. Quoting what Jenny said is how Oliver was trying to let his father know that he loves and forgives him. Jenny always wanted Oliver to reconcile with his father, but he was stubborn about it. He now sees the importance of letting his father know that he loves him because one of them will not always be there. The same author wrote the sequel to this book and the movie was made as well. It's called "Oliver's Story".

This movie defined love for millions of people. After Love Story, we all wanted to find an Ali Mcgraw, long haired beautiful Laurie Partridge looking gal who loved us. We wanted the new to college love affair and the background music. Every love we had never seemed to fit the bill. No background music. No Jenny or Laurie. Just real life. I never understood how love means never having to say you're sorry. It really should be loving someone enough to admit you're sorry. Great movie though...
@twiddle712515 жыл бұрын
I see it as being two very different things. I think it could mean you should never have to apologize for anything you do, to a loved one because they should love you totally and unconditionally. I used to think that's what this meant until I really started thinking about this scene in particular when he says it to his father. His father never should have had to say he's sorry because he should never have estranged his son in the first place. Idk that's my take on it.
