Dammit, that hit a lot harder than I expected. Lost my father back in February, and my friends both online and IRL were a large part of why I remained at least vaguely functional. Here's to families, no matter who they're made up of, and here's to friendship, that most important of relationships. Shine brightly.

That ending brought up some memories for me. I served in the U.S. Army with a guy that got a Degenerative Bone Disease, it took a massive toll on him. Great reading from Agro as usual.

Ouch! That hit straight to the feelers. Just goes to prove that online friendships are friendships too. For the Author of the Story ! May he write more HFY stories! For the Narrator of the Story! May he narrate more HFY stories! For the Ineffable Algorithm! May it always favour Agro Squirrel! For the Beard! May it regrow quickly!

This reminded of a time I played Second Life. I was about to join the Raven Raiders Air Force and was playing in the community combat arena sim, it was Neutral territory. In the middle of a sniper battle we all laid down arms due to a server wide announcement. A big contributor to the sim and community funding has died, he was a US soldier in Iraq and people from over 37 countries on the server held a funeral for him right there in the middle of our battlefield, a field he loved so much. We all gave him a final farewell in game. There was an official 21 gun salute. Then everyone else did one… I will never forget how gamers no matter their nationality or background can come together in peace to honor the fallen.

Want to know a secret? It's a hard one but SO incredibly valuable. You can reach people now that no one else ever can. Just like in this story with Solae. Some people won't hear a story unless it's from the right person. And you being debilitated by back pain makes you someone to hear. Be happy not for your sake, but so someone else can see you. A friend of mine got cancer of the pain center of the brain. Literally the most painful disease possible. He was smiling as much as he could and...Well, it had quite the impact. And sometimes that helps with your pain too.

@@feldamar2 It's true. One of my guildmates a decade or so back was the most bubbly, sweet lady, just really the life of the group. Her death came as a shock to most of us, because she knew there was nothing anyone could do, so she didn't want anyone to worry, just to help people be happy. Like how Gene Wilder didn't let anyone talk about him having Alzheimer's until after his passing, so there wouldn't be less smiles in the world.

This is so good. Its something that not enough people understand. I was playing online games in the era of the early 1990s. "No females online.. and blah blah blah". I had friends in the middle east during 9/11 to the point that they told me it wasn't the US just local people doing crap (I don't just remember it because of that but because I was translating French to other Americans in my group at the time..) Many others die during my time online. The thing is you can't mourn them. Not the way you want to. You can't explain it to others.. not your family or your friends. So you keep going on and then this narration happened. All my love to you and the author.

Now *that's* what you call a tear-jerker. I lost an online friend. I still feel that vague sense of loss, knowing he's gone and not coming back. The particular server he frequented had a permanent memorial to him. Two, in fact, from two different people. Now even the server is gone, and probably forever. But I'll remember King Lee of The Knights of Tristram for the rest of my life.

Damn .. I've lost a few .. but one of the best stories I have is pint sized .. a year to 3 year old child .. her mother used to put her on her toon back in Everquest.. she couldn't do much, mom sat her up to buff ... 1-8 keys .. kiddo would spin around and stop and buff anyone in sight .. if you didnt get buffs. . you could always just walk up face on and wave ... mom would be making dinner, apologizing about us "watching" over the little one.. I remember the great running of the wolves.. she buffed 100s of people on that beach, we would dance and wave .. she never seemed to get bored or down .. we did this for more than a year in grind areas, we entertained her, that was 20 years ago ..in the evening at dinner, little ones all grown up now.. I wonder if she remembers any of it.

I went to a cousins funeral this weekend, and then this video comes out and hits me in the already weak feels. She was an emergency dispatcher, and she also had life defining disease that eventually confined her to a wheelchair. She got to plan out her own funeral, as she knew it was coming. But the respect of the police and firefighters who she worked with, especially the “Final Call” over the radio…… “don’t worry [Cousin], we got it from here.” 😢 ♥️ 🫡 it’s a terrible day for rain.

I was in an EQ guild that folded because the leader became ill and couldn't play any longer. I then joined a raiding guild that played 5-6 hours per night. One of my previous guildmates didn't have the time to raid that much, but I would invite him to join my party for any group play I did after raiding, then one day he vanished, I found out about a week later that he had passed away irl.
