Twenty three thousand Morag civilians killed to 3.2 billion human civilians in one of 3 worlds burned is an extremely insignificant and restrained number especially considering it was an interstellar war. In fact, that's almost a complete miracle when you think about it. That was honesty far more merciful than what was deserved. The military of the terran confederacy must be made of the most generous and caring saints and the greatest military masterminds in the history of interstellar war to pull that off.

That was purely political. The reality of the matter is that in trench warfare those shotguns were essentially useless. Their 'success' is pretty much all down to a single US Journalist who applied a fair bit of creative license to his story. The problem was not in the shotgun really, it was the ammunition. Shotgun ammunition at that time was made of what was essentially a stiff cardboard. Now, how do you imagine that ammunition fared in North Western Europe during war time? This was compounded by the fact the shotgunners were not issued bandoliers so had to carry their ammo in their POCKETS. The end result was that most of the ammunition they carried either got wet or was damaged, thus the rate of misfire was staggering. In fact it was so bad that US troops issued shotguns generally 'lost' them as soon as possible, replacing them with an Enfield 1917 or Springfield 1903 at the first opportunity. A very nice myth, but I am afraid it is just that, a myth. Its like, do Americans honestly expect that the Europeans did not TRY shotguns? They did, but they came across those ammunition problems so discarded them almost as soon as they tried them.

This is unfortunately a subpar story. The author either got bored and decided to end it in the middle, or does not understand how to structure a tale. To clarify: he/she goes to great effort to set things up, in great detail that is well delivered. I was thoroughly engrossed and wanted to see where it was leading. And then in the second to last paragraph, he just flushed ALL that excellent set-up down the toilet. It went nowhere and gave no payoff or resolution. It just whipsawed around and ended on "oh we won, yeaaa us". NO resolution to the trial, NO emotional payoff. If the trail had been expertly turned around ONTO the Morag, with the human pushing the council to actually have the balls to stand up to them.. THEN the big reveal, but written better where the holofield cuts to the final attack actually making planetfall and finally capturing the high council, that would have been a really good story. You know I really do think the author just got tired of it and chopped it halfway thru.
