Dave, I wanna leave you with a few things... - The shirt: Badass. I'd buy one. - The look: Badass. You look like an old metalhead. I'm an old metalhead, so that's a plus in my book. - The skill: Badass. It's so common sense and easy to do, yet I never thought of it. Guess that makes me a dumbass. Anyhoozle, awesome work and keep it coming. All the best to you and yours, God Bless.

Dave, you're getting very close to having the functions of an astrolabe. I have a cardboard/plastic version tucked in my camping journal which allows me to determine direction, time of day, rise/set times for sun and major stars. It works at any time day or night as long as I can see the sun or a star that is plotted on my astrolabe. It increases the accuracy of your method by taking into account the seasons and allows a single measurement to give the desired information instead of having to wait for particular parts of the day. I also use it to measure angles (both vertical and horizontal) to less than a degree for precise navigation and measurements. I would suggest the astrolabe as a subject for further study ... I think you would enjoy it.

Couldn't help but notice *the five ignition methods* on the board behind you, and while i fully understand why you choose those 5 ... still sort of irks me that it's not 'the actual five' ... which would be: *By Spark* (Lighter, Ferro-rod, Flint&steel), *By the Sun* (Magnifying Glass), *By Friction* (Hand/Bow-Drill, Plow), *By Chemical Reaction* (Matches, Permanganate), *Electrical* (shorting a battery) ... Maybe something to consider, though there is certainly an understandable reason to keep it simple and list them based upon effort and kit considerations ... This comment is mainly here to leave a comment in support of the channel, and maybe somebody glances over this and learns something, or realises something they hadn't considered yet.

It seems to me I should make sure the two sticks I lay on the ground should be equal length. Perhaps I'm wrong.

You don't need that much time between measurements. And you don't need straight sticks or straws. Just use 2 rocks and the shadow end points of any stick for an hour or so. Of course longer is more accurate but if you're on the move and don't have a day to wait, take small readings and you'll be fine
@DavidCanterbury
@DavidCanterbury 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get that not my first rodeo, you are missing the point of LAST/First it means before bed and when you wake up more accurate and no time spent waiting as you are already sleeping. The shadow stick method should only be used when above average accuracy is desired and then it can only be accurate with any consistency if the 2 shadows the same length are measures ie. 10 and 2 etc... Much easier methods are used for on the fly-

Could it be an important note here to make sure that the two shadow sticks are the same length? Seems like a wide range of angles would be possible for the East-West stick otherwise.

bBlaF Yes. I was going to mention that as well. It IS VERY important that they are the same length.
