If you're an undergrad Adam then you really don't need to stress all that much. To say that undergrad history courses are a joke is an understatement. They don't go into detail on anything, just a general overview of major events and personalities. We spent maybe three hours on the entirety of the Roman era, for example, all the way from the beginning of the Republic to the end of the Empire. We never even went over the Muslim-Sassanid conflicts either, just a general overview of Muhammad's beginnings and his eventual conquest of the Arabian peninsula.

Many reasons often different from one instance to the next. Overall though advanced battlefield maneouvers are very difficult and require a well disciplined core of veteran soldiers. We talk about the times it worked because it leads to these stunning victories that reshape history but we don't talk about the thousands of times it failed. A feigned retreat can very quickly turn into a real retreat and looks like one from an observers perspective so many attempts never even get recognized as what they were. Also the general knowledge of tactics and strategy that we enjoy simply didn't exist back then, they relied mostly on the experience of veterans to teach young leaders and the efficacy of this varies wildly. Lastly as you pointed out Reconnaissance was generally underrated. Rome was famously bad at scouting for several centuries as their noble born cavalry felt that scouting missions were beneath their status.

Remember messages and scouting reports had to brought manually back to the commanders and by the time they arrived there was a good chance the enemy had moved again. Communications weren't always anywhere near as fast as they are now.

A feigned retreat proposes a wager to enemy. Put yourself in the shoes of the Persians, they were getting grinded for like ages by the Caliphate. They were on defensive and destabilised. They needed something to turn the tables, something like a decisive victory. See how hard it would to leave alone enemy unscathed which could have been destroyed? Even if you consider the risks of a Feigned retreat, the temptation of the possibility of great victory can overwhelm you .It has happened many times in history a Victory fell short of being decisive because of caution. These are the moments which differentiate a good General from a Great one.

That on itself is a great feat of Military History, and that's a real fact. That is all I wanted to say. I'm tired of the stupid conflict some historians have over the Muslim Conquests, just because they dislike the idea of watching the Romans and Sassanian Armies loose to an "inferior" enemy. This might have been my favorite episode you've ever done. Firstly because I just didn't know how it would end based solely on the existence of modern countries. Both Arabs and Iranians exist in the Middle East today. Second, the practicality of everyone involved. Nobody in the battle was foolhardy or brash. Everything cold and calculated. Even when the Sassanids fell for the bait, they did so incredibly carefully and even had the correct contingent plan to counter the trap. So cool! I was seriously out of breathe and excited to see how this would end. Simply bravo for this episode, guys!

Always a pleasure to watch your videos, the amount of work that goes into them must be tremendous. Doing a famous or interesting battle is tough enough, but going through an entire period of history and maintaining quality throughout shows outstanding devotion to your work. It is much appreciated. Having said that, I do sense sometimes a bit of bias, for example, in the episode about the siege of Damascus 634AD.

Bullshit! You don't know anything about Islam history. There were Muslims and their commanders with their own power, bravery and minds who used to conquer areas and Umar never participated in any of those battles and he was sitting in Arabia. He was the biggest coward in history of Islam and he has scraped from all battles during Prophet Muhammad era. Did you know that you can't find even a weak source to prove that he could kill even one enemy of Islam? The man who conquered and won all battles during Prophet era was Imam Ali Ibn Abitalib who won all battles and never scaped from any battle. Umar and Abubakr hijacked the leadership of Islam from him by a coup.

Umar is a very logical man. Albeit his decisions were sometimes controversial (e.g. Khalid recalled from military duty), it's always based on logic that unstopable military machine like him might have gained fanatic supporters unintentionally (khalid wasn't known as political man unlike Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan) if let loose for too long despite his contributions for Islam. That decision also opening up for another officers to shine. Truly, Islamic government was at its peak military and administration under Umar ibn Khatthab Radiyallahu 'Anhu.

Akhi we love Khalid radiAllahu3anhu but Khalid was only removed not because of hatred or envy as some western orientalist try to portray umar RA but it was because umar wanted to stop the rumors of Muslims wining battle after battle because of Khalid…when victory is only from Allah, but Khalid was just a means Allah used to grant victory to Islam and the muslims( rAnhum ajma3een) that’s the reason why its mentioned in our books of Hadith/fiqh- seerahtul sahaba and kutub Al jihad from mass transmitters. Western academia try’s to portray some sahaba especially umar as bad because a lot of Shia are in those institutions…They have this deep hatred that the blessed companions spread Islam and therefore deviated from the teachings of prophet Muhammad Alayhisalatuwasalam which is complete BS. JazakAllahukhayran just wanted to clarify

Sassanid? First time I read that name outside of an actual paper book. It's very nice to see a channel that brushes more obscure subjects. These things also shaped world history. In fact, the Sassanian and the Parthian before them had an incredible influence on European (and central Asian history) influencing mounted warfare in what would both become the knightly kingdoms and the steppe people. (notwhistanding their cultural influence, such as a story of a round table with noble warriors led by a lord holding a magical sword, among many other tales...)
