Still there as of last week (Wednesday, August 16, 2017). There has been an ongoing claim that the wig wag signal was the one featured in the 1922 catalogue for the Magnetic Signal Company. The City of Anaheim is staunchly opposed to any proposals to remove it because of its potential historical status. Union Pacific has in the past 6 months backed down from attempting to remove the wig wag as I am sure the city would take legal action if they pursued removing it.

I learned to walk because I knew that when the wig wag started ringing I would be able to see the red car from the screen door of my grand parents home in Bellflower.

Yes, as of March 2019 it is gone. No doubt that UP’s legal department urged its removal for liability. A lawyer for a hypothetical plaintiff whose family was lost at Santa Ana & Lemon would have a field day with that wig wag. And UP would be out of several million. Liability - why grade crossing and line side signals are being changed; and why railroad employees are chasing away railfans.

Since I am 73 years old I remember as a child a wig wag signal in the San Fernando Valley in the late 1950s that was located on the old Woodman Ave near Saticoy Street. Eventually a New Woodman Ave was built with an under crossing of the railroad tracks and the old Woodman Ave crossing was removed and the old Woodman Ave got renamed Ventura Canyon Ave. By now it is likely that all of these old wig wag signals have been removed.

Great informative video. What a shame to see that huge pile of inter urban cars (although I'm glad that someone took the picture) and I sure hope that wig wag is there for another one hundred years! They can go ahead and put up gates if they want. Just leave the wig wag there and still active. That shouldn't be to difficult to do!

A wig-wag might have been OK in the 1800's, but it is obviously a pathetically weak warning device for modern traffic. The red light is very weak, to say the least. SO, what about the red flashing lights currently being used. They are obsolete for a number of reasons: too narrow of a view, too weak in fog, snow storms and heavy rain. Let's get to the bottom of this. Railroad crossings would be much safer IF they had standard Red / Yellow / Green traffic signals. Consider the fact that the red flashing lights start flashing with no advance warning. That's why a lot of drivers end up driving past the red flashing lights---the lights started flashing when the vehicle was close to the crossing and the driver didn't have time to stop. Imagine being on a highway with a 60 MPH speed limit and you are 200 feet away from a railroad crossing. At 60 MPH, you are traveling at 88 feet a second. So in 2.27 seconds, you will be at the crossing. So, what happens when you are 200 feet from the crossing and, all of a sudden, the red lights start to flash. Will you be able to stop in 2.27 seconds? No. And, what if you have a tractor-trailer on your back bumper? Bottom line: NO advance warning that the red lights will start to flash. NONE! The government agencies and the railroads could install a flashing yellow light at the Advance R/R sign to let you know you will have to stop ahead. Some traffic signals on state highways have an advance, active warning sign. But, NO railroad crossings! WHY? Well, it costs money to have a simple flashing yellow light on both sides of the crossing AND the government people--local, county, state--Plus the railroads don't want to supply the money to install them, maintain them and provide the electricity to operate them. SO, as usual for over 150 years, "Money first, Safety last." Result: the public gets hit by trains and gets injured or killed. AND, the train detection system still being installed and still being used, the Track Circuit, is from 1872! NOT 1972----1872. It fails to detect trains in various locations around the U.S. and on a daily basis. The main culprit: rust on the rails. The railroads and the FRA claim the Track Circuit is "fail-safe." It is a monstrous lie and gets people injured and killed daily. A total Track Circuit detection failure caused the deaths of a mother and daughter in Charlotte, Michigan, on April 27, 2004. The railroad claimed, "Everything was working." That was a complete and total lie. They ran a rail grinder over the track the very next day to remove the heavy layer of rust and didn't bother (!) to inform the police.
