It basically works like commercial dishwashers in restaurants work. Super hot water, high pressure, and high flow. The water gets the dishes so hot it evaporates on its own.

GE used to make portable dishwashers similar to this one - it loaded from the top. When the lid was opened the top rack would split into two sections and raise with the top itself exposing the larger area below for dishes. The one I had was copper colored with a redwood butcher block top - and it had a well all around the lid for collection of carved meat juices. GE also made some portable round looking dishwashers in the late 1940's - sort of looked like a round wringer washer tub with a lid that just lifted off . The top rack (all stainless steel) could be lifted out completely from the inside, exposing the area below for larger dishes and pots and pans. The top rack was for glasses and cups. Detergent was dumped in like you would a washer, the lid was placed back on and you'd hook up the hot water to a hose fitting that was like those rinse hoses you'd find for bathtubs years ago. And the drain was like any other washer drain hose, just hung over the sink. It was either on or off. Took 15 minutes.

We had one of these when I was a kid! It didn't hold a lot. You had to bend over to get the plates down in the bottom part-I remember it was tricky. Then the hose had to be hooked up to the sink faucet. What a disaster if it wasn't connected all the way and the water sprayed all over the kitchen! We still washed all the pots and pans by hand (actually, I STILL wash the pots and pans by hand!), but at least we didn't have to do the plates and glasses and silverware. It was a modern marvel for us. Someone moved and gave it to us in about '65, so by the time we got this 50's model it was old, but better than nothin'!

This just proves that there is nothing new under the sun. Many dishwashers on today's market have many of the same features that this model had. Much of today's dishwasher technology has long existed. At 185 degrees, anything would come clean, and fast. Very few modern dishwashers run at this temp. Even with temp boost, most only average 140 to 155 degrees. Love this! What a fantastic video. Very interesting!

These older dishwashers worked much better. They did use more water, but the spray was stronger, and they ran hotter. Unless you had hard water, water spots weren’t very common.

Modern dishwashers are made to work slower because they use less water (thanks to all the liberal tree huggers) and therefore aren't as powerful as the older models. This particular dishwasher used a LOT of water but it got the job done faster and because the water is super-charged to almost boiling hot, it gets them cleaner than today's pieces-of-junk dishwasher never could!
@rahilraza13443 ай бұрын
Older dish washers and same goes with washing machines were quick but they also use alot of water too so they both have there pros and cons pretty much i had a bosch i believe 1994 dishwasher and it did the main wash in 10 minutes total but it did used more water a total of 8-10 gallons per cycle . Overall it was good we used it every 3-4 days or so and it lasted good we got rid of it at 2023 when we remodeled the kitchen and got a midea brand new one

Wow. I'm sold. Mine takes 2 to 4 hours ("smart" sensor) and doesn't do anything. We just wash them by hand and use it as a drying rack. Just a thought for all the people like my wife the complain about "wasting water", it RECYCLES the water! Just like a clothes washer fills then uses that same water until the next cycle. Dish washers cycle the same water through the jets over and over until the cycle is done. Don't listen to the jets, listen for the drain pump and the sound of the water in the sink drain. And as far as that goes, pretty sure one 9 minute cycle uses less water then hours of smart cycle "sensing".

Though the machine might have worked O.K. , the capacity was limited. True it might have done a load of dishes quickly. The front loading dishwashers that were around then were much better. One example at the time was the KitchenAid KD-10 series dishwashers by Hobart. They could hold a service of 8. The machine was loaded from the front. Not only did it wash the dishes, it dried them too. The machine used 9 1/3 gallons of water (good for the time) and got the job done in 43 minutes. That design was used right up to the KD-12 series dishwashers that were manufactured until 1960. The same washing mechanics were used in the KD-14 (there was no KD-13 series dishwashers) series dishwashers, but they started to have multiple cycles which eliminated the simple design of the earlier machines. The KitchenAid KD-15 series dishwashers went to a new design for the wash arm and the latch was changed to the design where it pulled up to open the door of the machine. This design was used for many years. At the time the Mullins machine was manufactured, appliance manufacturers were trying many designs. Some worked. Some failed. In 1950, the automatic dishwasher was evolving since it was new. Within a few years or so, the designs that did not work were discontinued by the manufacturers. Even if the machine did a good job in washing the dishes, it might have failed because it was inconvenient to use. Also other designs proved to be better so it was decided not to continue the production of that particular design. Later, Youngstown Kitchens went to a conventional front loading dishwasher which used the jet tower design except that the "tower" was horizontal instead of vertical. Whether it worked well is a matter of conjecture. However, it had greater capacity than the earlier top loading design and it probably was a better dishwasher overall. The top loading machines were limited to the portable models perhaps starting by the mid-1950s and in time, front loading portable models became the rule.

We need to re-evaluate our past and figure out what we need to do to re-apply these principles in our modern world. #1. Efficiency. #2. Practicality. #3. Durability. No! If the hose wasn't connected right it would blast off and the whole kitchen would get sprayed. It took up half the kitchen. You had to bend over to get the plates in the bottom and it didn't hold a lot. We had one, back in the day! It was helpful psychologically. In reality, we had to rinse the dishes super clean before we put them in and we still washed all the pans by hand. In the end the dishes had to be put away, which was always my least favorite part of doing dishes (still is.)

The 185 degree temperature would help to dry the dishes. Also, leaving the door ajar after the cycle would have also helped. Even with modern dishwashers most people use the air dry option. Of course, rinse aids most likely did not exist back then, hence the wetter dishes. Rinse aid enhance drying, even with air dry option.

I've owned 3 dishwashers in my life. All three were supposed to be "the greatest". I always clean off the food and rinse the dishes thoroughly right away (or within 30 minutes of using them) - and not a single dishwasher has gotten all the residue off; nor could they tackle pots, pans and forget about baking dishes! I only use mine to rinse dishes when I clean out my cupboards, wash knickknacks or to wash/sterilize ball jars for canning.

I still don't. I don't leave big hunks of food on them, of course - that gets removed and tossed out. But they don't "get washed before they get washed" like so many people insist on doing even now. That used to be a joke about people who insist on washing everything off first, then putting it in the dishwasher to be washed. Again. My dishwasher HAS an automatic food grinder for the smaller particles of food, and it does an admirable job. Plus, I have done ample research through home testing on the dishwasher soaps available for use - powders, gels, liquids, "pods" or gel packs, and the "tablet" type with or without any extra added rinse aids and what have you. The best one that works with my dishwasher, my water, and type of dishwashing that normally gets done is the soft gel packs. One goes in the little dispenser and the door gets snapped closed. There isn't even any need for a rinse aid. I dont buy them, and they don't seem necessary. And we live in the country, and have well water! We also have an excellent water softener as well, apparently, because there's no iron stains or residue inside the dishwasher, or on the dishes. Just the one little pod thing is all it takes. Of course, I also run it on the highest level sanitizer cycle as well, because I want them all to come out well "sanitized", no matter what size the load is that gets run. There's a water temp booster inside the dishwasher workings as well, so I don't have to turn up the thermostat on my hot water heater to get it hotter in the dishwasher. And no, this is hardly the "top level" model available. Quite the contrary. We only paid for the highest level model that had the features we wanted.
