When I met The One Reborn, I thought it was an amalgam of the citizens from the Unseen village, as a result of Mensis starting the dream. Splitting their bodies and minds. Their bodies would stay to create The One Reborn and their minds would be brought into the dream forming the brain of Mensis. They created abominations because they could not successfully integrate mind and body. This is somewhat similar to Hunters seeing everyone as beasts and night terrors. In a night terror your brain is still fully connected from REM sleep, but you're awake. As such, your right hemisphere projects terrors into the "waking world" (from personal experience floating specters, squid like creatures, spiders ) and your left brain perceives them as reality.

Complete conjecture here: Since an amygdala is a part of the brain, and considering that a) the one reborn is summoned right next to the host the nightmare's body, and b) the nightmare might be bleeding into Yahargul's physical location, that Mensis managed to create the brain within the nightmare and was trying to manifest it physically in Yahargul to then attach it to the one reborn, therefore "completing" it? As to why, maybe to create a great one that could then be controlled by them with the help of the pthumerian summoners?
@thejokercjdr3 жыл бұрын
It works the other way around apparently, given what happens to most of Byrgenwerth and Loran: the nightmare doesn't spill into reality, reality gets sucked into the nightmare. Also, given the location of the one reborn, just outside the chapel were the School of Mensis' members' corpses are, it's most likely the One Reborn just serves as some sort of golem, a guardian made to protect those in the Nightmare of Mensis from any interferance from the outside world, given life as part, or a byproduct of the ritual to create the Nightmare of Mensis itself. As for the Brain of Mensis, it is an actual Great One who has been enslaved and abused by the School of Mensis for their own purposes, which is one of the themes of Bloodborne: many item descriptions mention the Great Ones are "sympathetic in spirit", willing to help humans trascend with their cosmic knowledge in order to obtain their "surrogate"; however, humanity always sucumbs to ambition and their beastly nature, and the Great Ones end up paying a price, too, which is what happens to the Brain of Mensis, who just minds its own business, but given the brain damaging nature of its very presence, it is enslaved as yet another protective measure against anyone trying to reach Mergo to end the Nightmare.
@AzizSketches3 жыл бұрын
@@thejokercjdr i read once as well that the one reborn is a failed task to create a moon presence because as we seen he come from the moon while flora is the moon as well, and maybe the phumarians help the school to awake mergo to retrieve thier greatness they once had until yharnam lost her child and they lost the great ones interest, mergo woke up as well as yharnam who heared her baby crying, mayhe losing her child is the reason she is captured deep within the chalice and tied up, i feel this theory is very close to the truth, but damn the school and the phumarians they did so much crimes in the price of humans and a mother and her child.

For some reason, I have a strong feeling is The One Reborn is a combination of Orphan Kos and the many dead bodies found basically everywhere. Maybe the merging with all of those sacrificed with a Great One but fallen from the Old Hunter's nightmare is why it looks that way. I think that The One Reborn was called a failure because the soul of the Orphan remained in the Old Hunter's nightmare. And since Berserk was a strong influence on Bloodborne, the ritual could be similar to that of the Eclipse where people are sacrificed to demons during the ritual hence why there are multiple Amygdala that can actually kill other enemies in Yahar'gul.

Hot take and Theory of Everything: The Mensis Ritual makes the Moon Presence/Flora/Paleblood Great One give birth to The One Reborn. The One Reborn was intended to be a man made Great One, with the bodies of the kidnapped humans as the physical raw material and the minds of the Mensis scholars as the "brain". Since everything in BB exists in a dual capacity, having bodies in the Waking/physical world and the Dreamlands/Nightmare/Spiritual world, any true great being would need to have and existence in both worlds. It is noted in several places that Great Ones can die in the physical world without being destroyed, their minds residing in the Nightmare. So, the school of Mensis wanted to ascend and figured out a number of rituals that would allow them to accumulate enough power an materials to construct their own artificial Great One. The ritual using Mergo to lure the catalyst of it all, the Moon Presence Great One. The ritual to transfigure and mould the inhabitants of Yahrnam into a body similar to that of an Amygdala. The ritual in the Nightmare to tranform their own minds into the Brain of Mensis. The similarities to the One Reborn and the Brain of Mensis to the Amygdala could imply that either this has been done before, that the Amygdala are Great Ones constructed by mortals in the past, or that they simply are the inspiration or blueprint the Mensis shcolars aimed to imitate. The Moon Presence of course does NOT like being used like some cosmic incubator for pesky mortals and subsumes the Hunter's workshop with its crew to try and stop these machinations, or to at least get revenge and kill the twisted offspring coming from this hubris of Mensis. This explains the fact that there were hunters before the Church, and why there's been special hunters connected to the Dream before the events of the game. Someone apparently tried to beckon the Moon presence before, but they were stopped with the intervention by Dream fueled hunters burning Old Yharnam to the ground. Willem does not approve of Micholash's plans and this is why he beckons the player character to find Rom and reveal the true nature of the world, so the player can proceed and intervene. Willem, unlike Laurence and later on Micolash is very vary of the Great Ones and seems to take a more philosophical approach to mankind's limitations, preferring a personal path to enlightenment that is not as direct. What do you think?
@aidengreen46633 жыл бұрын
My thoughts: We see the bodies of the inhabitants frozen into stone all through The Unseen Village. Does this imply that some other bodies were used or were they transported to Mergo's dream like Micolash was and transformed there? When I saw the similarities between an Amygdala and the Brain, my assumption was that it was the experimented upon head of an Amygdala that the School captured. It could been the Brain is a result of some of Micolash's cult tried to fuse their minds into an Amygdala and then merge that with the One Reborn. I always saw the Amygdala as not being Great Ones but rather some kind of creature related to the Messengers that are able to travel from the Dreams and back, and may be native to the Nightmare Frontier. The Church and School believing them Great Ones could be a case of mistaken identity.
@MegaBlair0073 жыл бұрын
The glowing skeletons in Yahar'gul are very similar to the "make contact" statue in Upper Cathedral Ward. The statue emits the "fire" sound when you come close, despite there being no visible fire effect. It also appears to glow with an unnatural light. Moreover, you can only access Upper Cathedral Ward after exploring Yahar'gul (after the blood moon) and finding the key.
@jedgrahek14263 жыл бұрын
I have a strong sense that the entirety of the game is the Hunter's Dream/Nightmare (besides the opening scene with the old man and the "waking up" ending), and that we are seeing many events that may have played out far apart in time originally, but within the Dream everything is temporally amalgamated, so despite the various events in the Hidden Village and the rest of the game clearly taking place over a long period of time, we encounter them all simultaneously from our perspective of just having entered the Dream. Like, I would be really surprised if Willem was literally supposed to be chilling in his chair looking at the moon at the exact same time as an agent of the Choir was rummaging through the abandoned school, but from your, or the Dream's, perspective, all meaningful events from some point in time onward (after the College was abandoned, but while Willem was still around) get compressed. There are a ton of things that don't quite work with this theory, but it also accounts for a great many things in the game that are otherwise inexplicable.

I've always been interested in the bell maidens. They appear to have the ability to summon things from other dimensions - players, enemies, freaking spiders. I truly love your explanation about how the sound works in Bloodborne as a media of arcane. Therefore, if these maidens are Pthumerians and they're trying to summon a thing back to life it could very much be Mergo - the son of the Queen of Pthumerians. This is definitely not an original idea but somehow it is canon in my head since Mensis scholars need a newborn to complete the ritual but Mergo had turned into a stone in reality, they could join forces with the maidens for the same goal. But, it still doesn't explain who "The One Reborn" truly is. The ritual was performed a long time ago according to the mummified bodies of Mensis scholars, and Mergo had already been taken into the nightmare after its reborn by the maidens. So TOR could be simply a mere shell of corpse pile, a guardian, to stop the intruders when they are too close to the Advent Plaza.

I believe that when the red moon descended, the corpse beasts and cramped caskets and all of that suddenly kicked into motion and "came to life" so to speak, and started slaughtering the kidnappers en masse as retribution for what was done to them. I don't have any other explanation for why the kidnappers would all be dead in droves like that, and both the positioning of some of those caskets and the way we can still witness them breaching their confines drives me to believe this.

I strongly support the idea that the One Reborn is somewhat related to Kos. The main body (the one that is on top) reminds me of the Orphan of Kos while the rest of the body, or bodies, make out a huge mass which sort of resembles Kos herself? Maybe the whole purpose was to recreate Kos or her child instead. But I don't understand why Yharnams populace would be used for something like this in the first place. Maybe the One Reborn was just a failed experiment and then the whole school moved on to something else, like Mergo.

I believe The One(s) Reborn is a form of defense. If you think about it, why are we being attacked? Even by Amigdalas? The other bell ladies always try to revive monsters that seems to be enchanted with some blood magic. The one the bring out the boss seem like a stronger version of those. The One Reborn seems to cover (come from) the red moon so it fells like it's a group effort at stopping the hunter from "knowing too much" and try to stop the rituals. As it is a revival of several people but focused as just one (maybe trying to resemble an Amigdala) it becomes the grotesque monster that it is. Made possible by the power of the red moon leaking nightmare into the real world.

What if someone who had the insight, told the school of Mensis about the amygdala everywhere in yahar'gul. The School of Mensis surely was interested in finding new great ones (maybe for even more blood), but they couldn't see the amygdala, so they asked the person who could see them, how they looked and from that they tried to build statues and kind of "worshipped" them. But they wanted to see them, so they tried to create one, they had the brain and the "body", maybe they werr really close, but then the hunter appears and wants to mess with the mensis ritual. And so they rather sacrificed their great project in order to stop you from reaching it. So, could it be, that every Great One is rather some creature (human or alien species), that ascended to Greatness, rather than being truely born as a Great One. Since "every Great One loses it's child"... or maybe ability to birth children (since they are so incredibly unique in shape)? Kind of an interesting thought for me... just have to figure out, how the umbilical cords fit into that... but since these aren't literal umbilical cords... hmm. 🤔
@gg2fan3 жыл бұрын
The best explanation I've ever heard is that the Great Ones are the absolute pinnacle of biology and evolution, so having children the conventional way is impossible because the only way to go is down. It's not possible for their children's DNA to surpass theirs, so the ONLY mutations and changes that happen (as happens in every conception, the DNA is written slightly differently leading to new mutations, you're not just a clone of your parents) in the process of conceiving a fetus are complications that lead to stillbirth. This is what Miyazaki meant by 'due to their positions'. It's also based on his observations that more advanced beings like humans and whales have fewer children with more difficulty per child, with smaller beings like flies casually unleashing hundreds of newborn per litter, so it's that same idea extrapolated to a Lovecraftian scale- Cosmic great ones being functionally unable to have a child at all. It's a bit of a storytelling conceit but it's a really fun one, that once a being reaches the absolute peak of what natural biology is capable of creating, it's literally too perfect to have children because the only mutations that occur during reproduction are negative ones.

Two questions. First: if we allow for the assumption that the human-headed spiders in The Nightmare of Mensis are scholars of Mensis who were transformed, what then are we to make of their presence in certain Chalice Dungeons, as well as the existence of Patches, who resides not in Mensis but the Lecture Building, gifts the Tonsil Stone to the Paleblood Hunter, thereafter directing them to the church where the lesser Amygdala transports them to the Lecture Building and then the Nightmare Frontier towards the true Amygdala therein? Second: 11:39 are those Messenger corpses? I never noticed that before, nor can I recall anyone beforehand pointing that out. They are also on the underbellies of the tentacle slugs in the Nightmare Frontier, but I'm unsure if it's related to the Brain of Mensis

I'll try to expand on your ideas related to the rituals and their relationship with the Pthumerians. We don't know exactly what the ritual consists of but I think the game gives us enough clues to figure out a lot of things about it. 1. First we know what human body parts are necessary to do rituals. We know this by looking at items like ritual blood, bloodshot eyeball and yellow backbones which you obtain after killing the one reborn. 2. We use these body parts to open the Phtumeru chalice dungeon, the game doesn't show us what we do with the body parts but it tells us that they're required to fill a chalice to complete a ritual. 3. All the enemies in Yahar'gul besides the 3 hunters and the chime maidens are undead amalgamations of body parts including the one reborn. To me it looks like the game is trying to tell us that all these undead monsters are the results of many Mensis rituals and that is the aftermath, which can let us to conclude that the rituals consist of killing their prisoners, taking their body parts to create the chimeras monsters that we see on Yahar'gul and in the nightmare of mensis, we can reinforce this idea by looking at the yellow backbone that the one reborn drops, which implies that it was created through a ritual. Another interesting issue is regarding the connection between the Pthumerians and the scholars. Checking the items descriptions like the one you showed and items like the Pthumeru chalice can let us conclude that the Pthumerians are the ones who created the rituals and know how do to them since you need to do these rituals with body parts to access Pthumeru. To me it looks like the presence of the chime maidens is the game trying to tell us that they were the ones assisting the school of Mensis and the Healing church in doing the rituals since they're the ones who know how to do the rituals. Lastly another theory that just came to my mind is about the summoning of the one reborn, we know that chime maidens are capable of summoning beings from other worlds and as we can see the one reborn comes from a black pit and a dark sky. To me it looks like the game is trying to suggest that they summoned the one reborn from another location inside the game, this is difficult to prove but it could be that they summoned the one reborn from the nightmare of Mensis, more specifically from the shutter where the brain of Mensis is dropped. This could be proved if we can compare the texture of the sky in the nightmare of mensis and the texture in the black hole that summons the one reborn, that would let us conclude that the one reborn was summoned from the nightmare.

Oh shoot. A thought hit me watching this. The one reborn, what if that was two experiments being done. One was to revive an amigdala as well as an attempt to transplant humans into it to achieve higher understanding? The brain of Mensus could actually be the head of the one reborn. Looking it it the head looks like the head would be missing, maybe being controlled by the human grafted to the top like a morbid centaur.

Excellent video! Congratulations! The One Reborn was always a big question mark (and still kinda is) but I find your theory (which imo has enough basis to not be just a wild speculation) very satisfying. I'm a little surprised that you didn't bring up the different interpretation of the Living String JP description that you brought up in your streams, since I believe it could help your case on the Brain of Mensis. As in, not a Great One that was already there and "found" in the nightmare, but "gained" through some process. Also, kudos to mug for the similarities with textures of the amygdalas. Once again, good job!

With the "failed to become" part of the One Reborn's name, and Bloodborne's heavy use of birth imagery (particularly perverted into something horrible), I wonder if it's supposed to refer to miscarriage, or even abortion. We do also get that reference to the School of Mensis which uses the words "resulting in the stillbirth of their minds", and while "mind" and "brain" aren't synonyms, they're certainly related, so I wonder if that's also relevant to the Brain of Mensis It looks kind of like they were trying to birth their minds into a Great One (looks like an Amygdala based on the "joshin" part) and had the ritual equivalent of a miscarriage, resulting in the stillbirth of their minds, perhaps creating the Brain of Mensis in the Nightmare of Mensis as well as resulting in the Amygdala they were trying to create coming out as the Great One equivalent of a stillborn child. This also does tie in with the whole thing of how every Great One loses its child, which I think means miscarriage Maybe the Nightmare of Mensis is the equivalent of a womb and the Brain of Mensis is the equivalent of an embryo. They perform the ritual (equivalent maybe of trying for a baby), implant their minds (equivalent maybe of gametes) into the Nightmare of Mensis (equivalent maybe of the womb) and form the Brain of Mensis (equivalent maybe of an embryo or zygote) and it gets miscarried (because all Great One babies do) resulting in the stillbirth of their minds (the One Reborn) Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. It's literally impossible to tell when it comes to Bloodborne

i personally believe that the one reborn was the school of mensis trying to recreate mergo, as that is the "one" that they worship the most. i know a lot of people think it was the orphan of kos, but i dont feel it works, as the orphan was mostly something associated with master willem, and while it's possible that micholash was a student of willem, because of how disconnected the school of mensis is with the healing church, who're very disconnected from byrgenwerth, it feels less likely for the one reborn to be the orphan. and while micholash does mention kos, he also says kosm, and seems to have a revelation that it is instead the cosmos that ascended rom.

Maybe YaharGul people were doing experiments on how to attach parts from one being onto another using many ways(physical, arcane, ect) to apply it to Great ones. Maybe they found an arcane way which was the best one which require one person making the spell and then a goo spread which made the people MERGE. The glue was slow enough so people could react to them and try to escape in panic. These leave their bodies "petrified" in terror, but made their souls merge with the chest skull tower, the human parts werewolf and even the Reborn. ¿????

Something that just occurred to me when you mentioned the Yharnamites who were partially transformed into beasts. Is the PC hunter just naturally more resistant to a beasthood transformation? Or is it the willingness of the hunter to become a best that makes them more resistant? The player uses a lot of blood vials throughout the game, surely our hunter has taken in enough blood to induce some kind of transformation, but the only transformation into a beastly form is when the beast rune is equipped. Is the lack of transformation due to some kind of natural resistance to the blood? Or is it a willingness to accept beasthood? Also, how can the hunter become a human again? Is it simply the power of the rune? If so, is the same power behind the beast rune also what effects the other beasts in the game? The Moon Presence and it's proximity to Yharnam is what makes people transform and runes are the transcriptions of the utterances of the Great Ones. Could there be some way that certain beasts could go back to being human? So much to think about.

I've seen a couple different theories about this. Some have pointed towards the blood-covered beast in the into cutscene being burned away being a symbolic representation of the PC not being susceptible to the plague. It's possible that since the PC is linked to the Hunter's Dream, and the Hunter's Dream is controlled by the Moon Presence, who is itself responsible (either consciously or unconsciously) for the plague, that that relationship makes the PC immune. Under this interpretation, taking the Yharnam Sunrise ending would make them vulnerable to the plague in the future. Another interpretation (I believe put forward by JSF), is that it is the act of channeling Blood Echoes that makes the PC immune to beasthood. When you channel Blood Echoes, the Doll seems to be taking them out of you, physically (in a way somewhat inverse of how Annelise gives you her blood). If having a ton of Blood Echoes or blood in general is what causes the transformation (without the presence of the Red Moon, of course), then the Doll removing them from you could be why you don't fall under the scourge unless you use the rune.

The little story that I concocted for myself with Yahar’gul and the One Reborn is that the School of Mensis was to Yahar’gul what the Healing Church is to Yharnam as a whole. By that I mean that much like the Healing Church presents itself as one thing to the general populace of Yharnam but is really another thing entirely the School of Mensis operates similarly in terms of its relationship to the populace of Yahar’gul. I say that because my interpretation of all of the bodies of citizens fused into the buildings and whatnot was that the populace of Yahar’gul was in some way sacrificed to bring about the coming of The One Reborn. I don’t really have any definitive evidence to back up my interpretation other than the fact that The One Reborn is comprised of this gross amalgamation of smaller humanoid bodies. And my interpretation of the School of Mensis as being akin to how the Healing Church operates has to do with the fact that the bodies of Yahar’gul citizens that are fused into the surroundings appear to be fleeing in terror. This implies to me that whatever caused their untimely ends happened suddenly and without warning. So even if the citizens of Yahar’gul knew that the School of Mensis was kind of a “rogue operation” in relation to the Healing Church, they still may have been misled or kept in the dark regarding the School of Mensis’ true intentions with their experiments. Again, much like the Healing Church does with the general populace of Yharnam. I realize that I’m not really backing up my interpretation with any concrete data, but I like it and think that it works (perhaps because there isn’t as much definitive information regarding Yahar’gul and The One Reborn). Anyways, I hope that if you see this comment you enjoy it and please feel free to give any feedback you might have. You produce great content, I’ve been getting a lot out of these examinations of the translations.
