I am a 68 year old man who was born in Ohio and had only lived in on other place before last August (Florida for the past five years). I have never had anything against Latinos (or blacks or Asians or anyone else) in my life. I have lived in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica for most of the past 11 months, and I have grown to appreciate Latinos in particular much more than I ever thought I would. There are lots of immigrants here from other countries in Central America, and lots of ex-pats from the USA who live here as well. Of coyrse there are social problems here: such problems exist anywhere human beings exist. But it is a democracy and generally life is good. Is the goverment corrupt? Sure. All governments are to at least some extent: the nature of the beast is that "Power corrupts". But in autocratic countries where a single person IS essentially the government, you have to add the last part of the maxim I quoted above to the discourse, and that is that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Most of he corrupt money infesting this country's coffers comes from laundering drug money for the drug cartels in South America. But most of the populace is willing to overlook that as long as their lives and moderately high standard of living are preserved. That is the local "Social Contract". Very, very few Costa Ricans even attempt to emigrate to the USA, because many people who are not rich correctly assume that they can live better here than there. I would guess that there are more relatively wealthy ex-pats from the USA here than there are middle class Ticos (people born to at least one Costa Rican parent) in the United States. Somewhat surprisigly, a whole lot of the ex-pats have admitted to me that they voted for trump, but most of them have healthy bank accounts, or real estate, or good stocks. I live on my pension from The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, not from Social Security, and I watch carefully how I spend my money, so I get by OK., and I am happier here than I had been for years before coming here. :-)

Shakeel Zaydan the only way to end cartels is to legalize drugs
@diego762494 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Once you remove their main source of income, they're just gonna move on to the next thing that sells. Cartels aren't just an abstract concept, they're people, and thus, they can think. Once drugs don't sell anymore, what's stopping them from doing bank hits instead? Kidnapping and ransoming en masse? And that's assuming that all countries, suddenly, legalized *all* sorts of drugs completely. 'Cause even if it was legalized in the US and Mexico, there's still plenty of countries out there to support drug trade. And even then, that's assuming that drugs were legalized to the absolute, no regulation at all, and with anyone being able to buy as much as they'd want. Otherwise, if there was even a tiny bit of regulation (like, say, you can't sell heroin to kids), then there'd still be a market, even if niche. Things are unfortunately not that simple, and if the solution was that easy, it would've already been tried. Because, even if drugs were legalized, all they'd have to do to keep their stuff selling would be to sell at a lower price than normal. Plus, come on, it'd just be destructive. Just imagine anyone being able to buy heroin. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That Mexican congressional candidate, "Fernando Puron," was murdered in public, while posing for a selfie with a supporter after a campaign debate! A surveillance camera captured a man walking up from behind, raising a gun and shooting him in the back of the head, that's terrifying! Evidently, Puron was running on an, "anti-cartel platform," obviously making him a target in Piedras Negras, which is scary for Americans, too because it's a town on the Texas/Mexico border. He was only one of 113 candidates and politicians who have been murdered in Mexico just since the election cycle started. Fifty relatives have also been killed and 132 politicians, mostly at the local level, have been threatened. 15,000 candidates run for the most open government positions Mexico has ever had, so Drug cartels and organized criminals felt especially desperate to try silencing those who would threaten their hold on lucrative smuggling routes to the world's number one consumer of illegal drugs, the United States of America. This is yet another huge reason thousands of innocent people are seeking asylum in America, Because they fear for the safety of their families. And, whether you like Mexicans or not, or believe we must reform our Immigration laws and practices, it's difficult to believe anyone who would say that they wouldn't try doing the exact same thing to protect their family!

The origin of the metaphor about the tiger is because once the mexican revolution started (1910) Porfirio Díaz (mexican dictator overturned by the revolution) said "Madero (the man that started the revolution) has left the tiger loose" meaning that all the war was Madero's fault because he incited the people (the tiger) into war. In this election anti-AMLO politicians have said that if he "leaves the tiger loose he has to tie it up again" to wich amlo said "the tiger has already awakened it self and the only ones to blame are the politicians in charge, so if it unties it self I'm not the one who is going to tie it up again" it's a big metaphor about civil rebellion, rigged elections and violence... Sounds better in spanish.

You could make the argument that the only thing about America that you hear on this show is bad news, but it's more a result of the format: public advocacy reporting with dumb jokes and cute animals. That doesn't mean that America or Mexico are bad, just that there are problems all over the world that ought to be fixed, right?
@usaisanempire43656 жыл бұрын
Noah Dillon the segment isn’t negative per say but it is still framed to make it seem like all the candidates are equally unqualified. AMLO(a proven far left true progressive populist) is compared to Trump (a proven far right globalist neoliberal/neocon). Also AMLO started a new party( called MORENA) in 2014 and is now more popular than the 3 major parties that have been running the country for nearly 100 years COMBINED! Somehow they only mention the smaller party in his coalition that is a mere 3% of his total following to paint AMLO as “antiabortion and anti LGBT”. AMLO stood literally side by side with poor natives in his state of Tabasco since decades ago to protest the very corrupt State run Petro company that was destroying their land. The state and federal police and military rolled in and pushed the protestors out very violently. AMLO has been in positions of power for a long time and still is not rich. He’s pretty much MLK-like in his vision for the country. I can do 1000 times a better report than this segment did. Yes it’s suppose to be comedy but don’t fool yourself like a lot of people in this comment section. HBO has a Pro international corporation Bias AKA Neoliberal agenda. HBO is owned by Time-Warner just like all our mainstream is owned by 6 corporations (and shrinking very soon). They do NOT want a far left candidate in power ANYWHERE in the Americas. Hence why we continue economic sanctions on Venezuela when they’ve done NOTHING to us.

The level of corruption in Latinamerican Countries is devastating. We are in a similar situatiin in Colombia but we chose the wrong president.
@j.25126 жыл бұрын
no you didn´t, you save yourselves from becoming another venezuela (i am venezuelan). You almost voted for a terrorist guerrila narco with the same ideology as chavez and maduro, no one can possibly be so ignorant to actually believe that would solve corruption lol, you are part of the stupid crowd
@americiato6 жыл бұрын
J. I think both candidates were great candidates however the one who won has the appraise of the traditional parties which are neck deep in corruption. Colombia's democracy is stable enough to counter any arbitrary decisions made by presidents thanks to the Constitutional court which makes it difficult for it to become another Venezuela. However I understand this concern conpletely. I'm so sorry for Venezuela in Colombia we are doing our best to help out our brothers. It's absolutely devastating the worst part is that it's not soon to be over.

The thing about AMLO being leftist or not, really hits on the meaning Americans give to liberlism. Liberalism is not a leftist ideology, not in a capitalist system. The US has no real left, even Sanders and AOC might be called center-left.

@yimarrodriguez81956 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. That insult is actually so Mexican that it is less than useless in any other country. It's like angrily screaming "bloody" something outside the UK. That word was a reason for mocking Colombian singer Maluma for using it. There was a Comedy Central Stand-up Colombia comedian who said: "What is even that word? Have you ever used it? Like "Vaya chingue sumercé". (Sumercé is a very Colombian word for "you" from the region that surrounds Bogotá. It sounds like cacophony next to such a Mexican term.)
