I live in Norway, a country with free healthcare. We don't give a shit that we have to pay a lot of taxes. I'm healthy and I don't need medication, operations or anything like that but i'll gladly pay taxes if it means that people who are sick can get the proper health care that they need. Why? Because I have human decency that's why...

After moving to the US (from Canada), I find the whole system here insane. Although the thing which really gets me is how brainwashed people are. The most common thing I hear is "I don't want the government telling me what doctor to see", I simply ask them why they see the doctor they use and the answer is always the same: "I use one my insurance takes". In Canada the government does tell you what doctor: Any fucking doctor. You're being told by a company which doctors you're allowed to use and that's somehow okay? I also hear "I don't want to pay for other people's healthcare with tax". Uh... Do people not realize they do that already and are fine with it? Police? Fire departments? Public schools? The list goes on and everyone is fine with it. But healthcare is the end of the world. haha
@yaimavol8 жыл бұрын
Canada is not perfect, Brock. If you live in Quebec, there is a chronic shortage of docs to see. Specialists require a waiting period. I won't even mention St. John's -- horrible. Wait time average in the US ER is 58 minutes to see a doctor. We have an awesome healthcare system. The quickest way to f___ that up is to put the government in charge.
@PeterBrockie8 жыл бұрын
No system is perfect. But in this system people can easily end up not getting medical attention despite having insurance because they're freaked out about it not being covered over some technicality. A coworker had some work done and ended up with a $7,000 bill despite it all being approved by the insurance, because the approved doctor didn't do some work in the same office or some nonsense. Just the threat of random shit like that happening is enough to scare people away and that's a terrible thing.
@Theomite8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Brockie Yes, but you see, the difference for lots of Americans is that the insurance companies are private companies and so American citizens consider that different because it's not a state entity. If the government determines whether or not you get health care, then Americans see it as an oppressive act of a tyrannical state. But if a private company does the same, then it's the act of a capitalist body exercising its right to determine how it spends its hard-earned money. You see, Americans draw a distinction between parallels not in action, but in designation. If Hitler had perpetrated the Holocaust through capital policies as head of IG Farben, then Americans might have caught on. But so far, we haven't had a historical precedent of capital entities being as bad as dictatorships so Americans remain ignorant.

Oh yes, indeed. The poor, who can't afford a big box of detergent to clean their clothes, for example, pay far more for a tiny one-time-use pack to do their washing at the laundromat. In fact, everything costs more for them pro rata, including food. How can we let this go on? This also happens here, in England, which is less capitalist than the USA, but both economies are predicated on the fantasy of the poor somehow becoming richer. The America dream - do me a favour. This is the 21st C, not the 19th. In the 19th C you got rich by fulfilling hopeful entrepreneurs' ambitions - whether mining, building, trains, communications, or consumer goods. Today, it's betraying yourself, your data, and everyone else to a global digital company, whose CEO is the richest man in the world - or at least among about the top 4 - it keeps changing. And one of whom, at least, is fantasizing about putting innocent, and stupid, people upon the planet Mars. "Terraforming," they trill. Yeah, right. Mars lost most of its atmosphere millions of years ago, so what makes you think you can restore it, and which is why it is totally hostile to human life? And if you can't, the naive pioneers will all die. I know it's good to be optimistic, but you also really need to be realistic.

@romannasuti257 жыл бұрын
Shadow Force that's why Bernie wanted to go all the way and implement single-payer. If literally only the government is allowed to set costs, companies cannot price gouge like they do now. Medicine and treatment costs something like 5x as much as actually needed on average, so the government forcing these companies to charge a fair price or GTFO would lower our prices and even tax burden in the long run.
@mastertoad27 жыл бұрын
Roman Nasuti But supply and demand says that government price caps will create a shortage.
@romannasuti257 жыл бұрын
mastertoad2 there's one critical flaw with that argument: medicine is a lot like drugs in that it doesn't neatly follow supply and demand to begin with. No matter the price, medicine will always be bought because, at some point, it becomes a critical necessity for life. Companies charging as much as they are isn't out of necessity or following market demand, they're price gouging because they know people will have very little, if any choice otherwise. Forcing them to a reasonable price point wouldn't destroy supply because the entire industry doesn't neatly follow conventional economic forces to begin with.
@danieldaw17787 жыл бұрын
Roman Nasuti This. I'm an economics major. Healthcare should be a public good that is non-rival and non-excludable in nature, since for many people it's necessary to survive. However, since this is America, our country decided to monetize the shit out of it and charge way more than necessary simply because they could.

I work in the medical field as a medical assistant and medical coder. Most ACA plans are not supported at my clinic or at the other clinics I have worked at in the past. The reason for this is that ACA does not reimburse the physician enough to provide the care needed. You might spend 100 dollars in care but receive 50 dollars from ACA. Another side effect of ACA is the skyrocketing premiums for other insured parties. My Uncle for instance who payed 200 dollars a month for years and years now pays nearly 1000 dollars a month. Perhaps we could go completely federal with a healthcare system but as a Veteran who cannot get adequate care why would I trust the government to treat 300+ million people when they can't even treat the 25 million veterans right now? Just something to think about from someone who does this kind of work everyday and has to federally supported hospitals.

You get the government you deserve. American politicians are some of the most corrupt the world has ever seen. Yet, they never see the inside of a jail-cell. Why? Because the whole system is corrupt, from the top-to-bottom.
@DojiLOL8 жыл бұрын
Amen dude, same job as you. I know what you mean. That's why mostly you only see young doctors that are only starting out their practice taking ACA plans. To make your point clearer to other people. When you get on an ACA plan the doctor that you choose is designated as your Primary Care Provider(PCP). The doctor then gets an allowance 50-100$ per patient that's signed up to that specific doctor. The doctor (PCP) is now in charge of providing the care to that patient, and any expenses that the patient makes are removed from that allowance, meds, labs, specialist visits. And if the doctor goes over a specific patient's allowance the extra expenses are removed from his bulk pay of all the ACA patients. So in other words is a system that incentivizes a doctor to provide the minimum possible care to maximize his profits.
@mikportland8 жыл бұрын
Oliver makes a point how obstructions republicans help create the problem of premiums to down play ACA. I am a veteran as well. Your point is mute, if you can pay 200-1000 or die or 100k+ or die. There goes your house. Your pessimistic view doesn't help anyone or yourself. ACA is not perfect and could be better but no! The clowns didn't want to make it better. @Brandon Drayton-- The problem begins with Private insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies whose only agenda is greed. Nobody rejects the idea that it is mandatory to insure our cars by paying private companies, yet American people are duped to yell against paying any taxes to non-beneficial government agencies to provide the same coverage for everybody in a universal healthcare as in all industrialized countries.

As a Canadian I really don't know why I'm so fascinated by the American Health Care train wreck. People didn't want to pay for other people's healthcare so you opted for the insurance route. Insurance doesn't mean that the money you paid into it is reserved for yourself - it means that you are paying for other people's healthcare (until you get sick). I'm really confused by the situation and the disconnect between what the Republicans are saying and what they have historically always done (screw over poor people).

And they literally undermine every attempt to make the law better because they can go back home and tell their constituents that they're fighting big government just so they can get re-elected! It's the most corrupt and self-serving system. The dreaded individual mandate was enacted because they refused to allow any type of socialization of the system, so in turn poor rural people can't afford coverage or can't pay the penalty, and then in turn hate the system more! It plays directly into their strategy. The ultimate irony is that they're all about saving costs and lowering the deficit, when the system that they're trying to uphold so fiercely is the MOST inefficient in the world! Americans spend more on health care per capita than anywhere else in the world. Literally any other system would save costs! It may not be African style corruption, but it's an even more pernicious and back-handed kind of corruption that people don't even realize is happening. At least in Africa when there's corruption the politicians are shamed, when it happens here all we saw is a Yacht paid for by a campaign donation and a politician re-elected in an uncontested race.

Disability where I live is a bitch to get into and takes forever to approve you. I'm trying to get disability now because I'm reaching the age I get cut off my parents insurance which I've already been. I know just how critical it is to have health insurance and republicans do not get it, they don't understand it and they don't care. If it's not affecting them personally they couldn't give less of a fuck, we can die on the street and they'd be happy. The republicans that actually make policy are rich and have more than adequate insurance, so saving money to them by cutting benefits will not affect them whatsoever. If it's not happening to them personally, it's not a problem worth fixing and never will be. This is how they think, empathy is a weakness to them. If it's happening to them you know something will be done about it immediately, otherwise they will promise the moon but in practice will give you less than crumbs.

@alexcarlson76918 жыл бұрын
EchoVids2u the show is a decent starting point, but his show is satire and done for comedy. Tax refundable credits and HSA make a lot of sence. They aren't the sole solution, but they have solid economic theory behind them. In the case of an HSA, you are less likely to run off to a hospital to get care you might not actually need, as opposed to being fully insured where someone else is picking up your hospital bill.
@HereIsHelena8 жыл бұрын
HSA make sense in "theory" but not in practice. Take for example someone with a bad cough that doesn't go to the doctor because they wouldn't want to waste money on care they "don't need". That cough develops into something serious until they HAVE to go to the hospital possibly being admitted and requiring much more treatment at a much higher cost. Most of that cost would have been prevented if they had been treated early when their illness was simple to treat. One of the ideas behind the ACA is preventative care. Many health problems can be prevented altogether or, at the very least, are easier to treat if they are caught or measures are taken to prevent them early. We don't want people skipping their yearly physicals, men foregoing prostate exams, or women pushing off mammograms to save a few bucks. These things, for example, save lives and lower costs.
@MrJaCraig8 жыл бұрын
It makes sense when you can shop around. There is no medical "market" in the US. Nor do medical professionals have an incentive to make one if all we have are HSAs. Which the Paul Ryan plan wants. Basically you trade in employer based insurance for an HSA similar to a 401k. If there was the equivalent of Amazon for medical procedures, then yes an HSA kind of makes sense for those that make a high income. The median household making $53k a year isn't going to be able to save enough for it to really help with any sort of emergency though, but could help with planned expenses like having a baby which is around $10k to $15k in the US. They could save for that but heart attack? Stroke? Really any life threatening emergency? You're talking more than they make in a year if not multiple years.

Many, many things. It's simply too large and has too many diverse cultures under the same governmental structure. The fact it's become this politically and socially toxic is unfortunate. If you had to nominate a single thing as the 'leading cause' then I would personally nominate a bipartisan system as it. Encouraging factionalism and thus infighting is not conductive to healthy government. Even in the few where it benefits someone (Feudalism, where the King want's the nobles at each others throats rather then his) it's still bad for the nation and it's population.
@johannvonbabylon8 жыл бұрын
I'm an American living in Europe. One day I had a severe migraine aura where I dissociated and hallucinated, it was later diagnosed as what I said and it's harmless and can be prevented, but at the time I feared it was epilepsy because it ran in my family. That day I didn't see the doctor to later, but I basically sat down outside for a half hour waiting for it to calm down and then walked home. My wife later asked me "why didn't you call an ambulance?" And I'm like "why the fuck would I do that, we can't afford that" and she's all "they don't charge you any money if it's a real emergency and potentially having a brain issue definitely counts". I had to explain to her that Americans are trained to never call an ambulance until it's a choice between "ambulance or definitely die". I had a coworker fall and hit the back of her head on the ground. Someone called 911 and paramedics were all around her, she kept saying "go away, don't check me, I didn't call you, I'm not paying for this!" which unfortunately was not an unreasonable thing to do, because even if she was insured, an ambulance ride would have still cost her hundreds of dollars just as a copay.
@Sorain18 жыл бұрын
This is the unfortunate reality that exists. It's why the ACA got the kind of support it did. It's why changing that will be at best a nightmare to do and at worst outright (effectively) impossible. I have seen zero evidence the current administration has a plan prepared, or even the outline of one, to address the same set of issues. If they did, I could at least state my view of how bad (or good) it is. The fact that I STILL think this is the best nation to live in on Earth at the present time, doesn't mean I don't see the decline in progress. Fortunately, I highly doubt that it's even possible from Trump to be reelected, which means in 4 years, someone will face dealing with the damage. I wish that person and their allies well, because they will need god's help I think.
@johannvonbabylon8 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "what the fuck is with Europe"? Unless you're referring to the sickening rise of far-right nationalism, in which case you'd be correct, otherwise I'm not sure what you're getting at. As someone outside the US it seems insane that health care is such a critical topic in the states, and that despite most of the citizens opposing the Republicans plans to drop the Affordable Health Care Act, these politicians still think it's a good idea to proceed with their plans. But the most important question to me, which I still can't get my head around, is: Who the fuck votes for a guy who openly planned during his campaign (among a lot of other terrible things he said) to revoke Obamacare and throw people out of their health insurance? It seems so absurdly stupid I can't even put it into words.
@korturas90847 жыл бұрын
The argument seems to be not that everyone should have healthcare, its that nobody should get it for "less than me", or "that I should have to pay for yours". Trumps pitch for his replacement for ACA sounded more like a shady commercial for some Get Rich Quick scheme. Lots and lots of buzz words and enthusiasm, but entirely devoid of factual details about how it actually works. The UK NHS (National Health Service) was founded with a laudable but sadly impossible ideal that it would eventually eradicate all illness. While it has proven to be impossible to do that, what it did achieve was to ensure that everyone, regardless of socio-economic status has access to health care. You can pay extra for better or faster care if you want to, but if you don't want to or cannot afford to, you will never be turned away from a hospital because you don't have any money to pay the bill. No one will. Yes, I pay a part of the bill for the homeless guy who was brought in passed-out drunk in the street in the middle of winter. I also pay part of the bill for the newborn baby who's single mother died in childbirth. And part of the bill for the child of wealthy parents who broke his/her leg skiing. Its a tiny part of the bill, but I pay it gladly. Safe in the knowledge that if I ever became ill in any way, I'll only ever have to pay the same tiny part of the bill to receive whatever healthcare I might need. I walk in, they treat me, and I walk back out again. No stress about bills larger than my annual income. Nothing. In. Fixed. Out. "But what if you never get sick? You've paid all that money for other people and gotten nothing back!" I'm cool with that, because I'm not an entirely heartless ars****e.

Skulduggery!!! Btw, I agree but people get so freaked out about anything even approaching socialism, that anybody who would like to create a single payor system feels like they're trying to convince a brick wall. Some of this can be traced back to the cold war (though socialism is actually different from communism) and various negative and horrifying examples like Jonestown that claimed to be a socialist community. Not to mention propaganda that is spread very well concerning other countries health care systems. All in all very disappointing when we see young people dying because they were $50 short to pay for their insulin.
@wrob16387 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the rich in this country or rather the 1% think they can pay off our politicians to pass laws that benefit them and no one else. The truth of the matter is if we changed over to Universal health care (health care for everyone) the cost would drop to about half of what we pay now, because we would be able to get rid of the corruption. Which the same rich gain to lose so the buy off our politicians.
@LexiLSify6 жыл бұрын
Exactly they mix everything together because of the cold war witch hunt when you basically weren't allowed to say anything bad about the US cause it meant you were a communist. You couldn't be slightly socialist because you'd be in prison for communism (basically). So much for freedom of thought and speech ! (couldn't even plead the 5th as it was then seen as you trying to hide shit). But yeah basically they think it's communism and that communism is Stalin. Also it's cute how they think democrats are leftists, and they don' realize democrat socialism would be good for them.

Think of it as car insurance. It's mandatory. You must have car insurance. More people have car insurance and the costs are going down. The same with health insurance. You must have it. Now, why is it so expensive ? Because the providers are private entities and they want to maximize their profits. That's why single payer healthcare is the way to go. More people in it lowers the costs. It's good for everybody.
@lizdobin20728 жыл бұрын

Noone is contsantly at risk of a car accident, but you are always at risk of getting sick or injured.
@schwasha0008 жыл бұрын
Chris Gatley Actually, that is wrong. The moment you get into a car to drive, your chances of a car accident sky rocket as opposed to just walking and having a car hit you or cause harm to you indirectly. But I am not always at risk of getting sick or injured. See, people like me only get sick once a year with the cold or flu and get back on my feet in days without needing healthcare. Problem with healthcare is being forcibly gouged for something I won't need or use. So no, you are more at constant risk of a car accident than being/getting sick.
@chrisgatley28778 жыл бұрын
Of course you are always at risk of getting sick or injured. You actually talk about getting hit by a car as if that won't require health insurance. By simply existing you are at risk. It may not be a large risk, and is entirely dependent on your circumstances and behaviour, but it's there. The ACA provides a safety net should something outside of your control happen to you. My point is you can avoid car insurance by not having a car. You can't avoid health insurance because you have a living body. Noone forces you to buy a car, noone forces you to buy a body, but you are born with a body nonetheless. Much like herd immunity with vaccines, the system doesn't work unless everyone, whom can and should partake, does.
@schwasha0008 жыл бұрын
Chris Gatley That is tyranny! Not only can you NOT force people to buy healthcare they cannot afford, but you cannot force healthy people to buy healthcare who are at minimal risk. You cannot penalized people for simply existing just because they cannot afford healthcare. You cannot STEAL money that you didn't earn to give to someone who is sickly and make other people pay their premiums. KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF *MY* PAYCHECK. All the ACA has done is made me poorer and less healthy. it is a failed system.
@janetchristian8 жыл бұрын
What this entire (otherwise spot on) analysis completely ignores is that we are the ONLY industrialized nation on the planet that clings to a for-profit healthcare system. If we eliminated the profitability from healthcare, we would not be in this mess.
@NorthernSeaWitch8 жыл бұрын
Not exactly true. Even in countries with universal health care/socialised medicine there is a for profit system in parallel for those that can afford to pay for it. That's fine, if more affluent people want to pay their own money for quicker access through private only doctors I have no objection to them doing so. Now if they pay and push non-affluent sick people out of the way (figuratively), then there would be an issue. If Republicans really cared about reducing costs, lowering per capita spending on health care they would stampede towards universal health care, but as they only care about maximising the profit for wealthy donors who run insurance and medical companies, they prop up a for profit, inherently iniquitous system.
@janetchristian8 жыл бұрын
In the US my pancreatitis medicine would be $3000/month out of pocket without insurance. In Spain, where we are moving (because of healthcare) the same meds will be $245. My private insurance here in the US is $800/month with a $7000 deductible. In Spain my insurance will be $200 with a small copay. BIG difference. And your statement was misleading. "In Switzerland, for example, any profit that insurers make on basic services must be plowed back into reducing premiums." www.tampabay.com/news/politics/national/politifact-no-one-does-for-profit-health-insurance-like-the-us-does/1079521

America is a death economy. The Military and Healthcare in this country are the obvious examples of this. When MLK Jr. said, "...this business of killing human beings with napalm..." he was speaking to the actually profiting from death, I mean he said later on that the result of all this leads to "injecting poisonous drugs of hate." Because those that profit from this death and fear knows that it serves to perpetuate the cycle, thus, allowing them to continue to profit from the death they cause.

@sebastianjimenezbienen70458 жыл бұрын
IamZani America has problems with healthcare depending on how you look at it. America does have problems with healthcare coverage, but it does not have problems with healthcare quality. It has arguably the best quality healthcare in the world (if you can afford it). The reason why this is such is also the reason why it's so limited and expensive for people to afford it: that there are incentives in place for pharmaceuticals and healthcare providers to invest in research and development and innovation. You would not have penicillin if it were not for these incentives, and you wouldn't have a lot of the advancements of modern medicine that everyone now benefits from. If you look at the world at large, it's actually convenient in the long run to have the American health care industry structured in this way. More discoveries, more treatments, more years in everyone's life, better for the species as a whole
@TheRomagnoli8 жыл бұрын

Sebastian Jimenez Bienen it doesn't matter if that exceptional quality is only accessible to few. The thing who need to wrap your head around is that one person alone doesn't make society; many do. A society that cannot take care of its human capital is a weak one. It would be impossible to mobilize the American population in 24h because the level of health and fitness of the majority simply sucks. The life expectancy in this country is decreasing, we have an abnormal obesity rate, and the level of child mortality is among the highest in the developed world. All these indicators should sound the alarm. A better and cheaper healthcare system that focuses on wellness and prevention would save us more money as a nation than the crap Republicans are trying to implement.
@Exl62438 жыл бұрын
But the whole point of insurance is that its a game of risk. Insurance companies are willing to pay your bill because you are healthy and are probably never going to use it for emergencies. It's an agreed upon game that I play. If I end up in the emergency room, I'm going to get treated, but I also agree to take the risk of paying a larger bill, unless a company offers to pay for me as long as I pay monthly fees. And that's the problem. It's not about health care, it's about the crippling fees you get from it. Sure, in the short term poor people will get covered and get immediate relief from crippling debt. But if every person is mandated to buy it: 1. It's immoral. 2. Healthy people will take the penalty while sick people get insurance, forcing insurers to drive up prices, driving more health people to leave the market and take the penalty fee. Even Aetna is leaving the insurance market for this exact reason. So now you're forced to choose: either be in debt from a healthcare bill or be in debt from an insurance bill. Your choice. Or, you can continue to bankrupt the government and make it insolvent, thus never getting money to cover for your bill.

There's a good reason pharmaceuticals take years to manufacture and test, and it's to ensure safety and efficacy. If the vaccine is not effective, but they put it out there anyway, people will feel like they are protected when they aren't and we're going to see another spike in cases, and considering that the high risk groups are going to be the first to be vaccinated, we are going to see more deaths. They have to pay thousands of people to design and price plans for employers, unions and individuals. Then there's billing, claims adjusters, customer service, executive pay, and profit. All that before your premiums ever get to an actual provider. Then the providers have to spend time and money dealing with the insurance companies. Getting claims approved and paid, cost negotiations and adjustments, billing and collections to the patients; all that takes time and money away from what's important: actual healthcare!

When y ou're cooking a new recipe and it's not quite right, you don't throw it all out. You tweak it, add spice, make it better. DO NOT THROW OUT THE ACA. Make it better. Why are we the only industrial nation without UNIVERSAL COVERAGE!!! Let's catch up with the other countries and TAKE CARE OF OUR PEOPLE!!!!

Julie Torgerson Here's an idea.... How about we tweek the healthcare system itself and stop making an aspirin in the hospital cost $250? How about starting where the problem really is? Stupidly high costs. And then how about people take care of themselves? Why the fuck you people think everyone else should take care of you is beyond me. I don't owe anyone health care. A woman who can't keep her legs closed? I need to pay for her care when she gets pregnant. Or her birth control so she can screw whoever she wants. And that's just one example. Bullshit man. Get it together and support legislation to get costs under control. Not make everyone else pay for it.

part of the tweaking or repair of our current system is to look at the costs of drugs an insurance rates. Many people lose large portions of their pay checks when the get insurance through the work place. I believe that we can fix this and that the drug and insurance companies can still make enough money.

Trump is going to, have you ever heard him speak on the subject? He says repeal and replace, in order to appeal to the largest audience. You can think of it as disable, repair, re-enable. Don't hate him until you understand the policy. The 25 year old children provision from ACA? Staying. Many other provisions will be staying as well, the good ones. The only reason Republicans ever hated the ACA, was it forced people who already had good coverage, to buy new.

So sick of the infighting in our Congress over practical Healthcare coverage for Americans who really need it! I hate both parties, especially the Republicans, over their continually undermining the Affordable Care Act instead of helping to fix it! It's just more proof that the "well insured" Senators & Congressmen in our government do NOT give a shit about Americans' healthcare!

To whomever runs this KZbin channel: I think you should link all of the sources shown in the graphics (i.e. that NY times article) in the video description. I'm using LWT as part of research for my own political talk show, and I, along with anybody else who might want to dig deeper into your stories, would greatly benefit from more convenient access to all of these sources. Just having that access there would probably generally encourage more people to delve into the news.
