You believe that she was just standing there peacefully and suddenly noticed that a man running nearby is an ISIS supporter who she knew from facebook? And by the way, was the child on his arms also an ISIS supporter? And the child she kicked later on, that was a terrorist too, right? Or maybe it's way more probable that she's just an evil woman? Which she is, for kicking a kid and risking the health of another, even if this one person was an ISIS supporter. Definetly not a hero.

If they hadn't left their country, they'd probably be dead. It's our moral and legal obligation to help these people...not hate them...I mean, why would you do that? They are just like you and me. ***** Most of these people are innocent humans trying to find refuge. Yes, some may have bad intentions, but so do people of all races, religions and backgrounds. Are there things we can do to stop these horrible things from happening? Probably. Does that mean we should treat every person like that as a criminal, forcing innocent people out of the country or physically assaulting them, simply for the actions of the minority? No. Absolutely not. Maybe I am naive in saying these people should be trusted. But I say it's better than the alternative. An alternative that breeds hatred and only leads to more hatred. Stop wasting your energy trying to stop innocent people from trying to live their lives, and put your anger towards stopping the people solely responsible.

Dear John Oliver, I am the child of two immigrants and I have many friends and family whom are not living here legally. I liked this segment very much, but I'd also like to point out the things I _didn't_ like from this message. My biggest problem is that you presented this issue largely using emotional appeal. The people whom are against immigration are people who are not concerned about the moral connotations of accepting or denying refugees or immigrants. To them, allowing immigrants enter their country is neither just nor unjust. So when you say "we have to do the right thing, we have to help war refugees," they often times don't see it as helping people in need, they see it more as economic drains on their economy. Most of my family are staunch liberals, but the thing I hate most about liberals is that they _refuse_ to present statistical data about immigration. They rely solely on emotional appeal to "help" immigrants, but the people whom need to be convinced, conservatives, look at immigration as an economic issue, not a moral one. So please, John Oliver, when you talk about immigrants and refugees, don't speak about how much we're helping people, *talk about how immigrants can help the hosting nation.* The people whom are against immigration can be swayed to help them, IF they are convinced that immigration is a benefit to their countries. Please use more statistics and studies in your upcoming presentations about immigration. Immigrants often times have lower crime rates and create jobs when they can open up businesses. They can pay taxes when given the opportunity. Please rely more on statistical data and logical appeal than emotional appeal. Thanks, - An immigrant born American

Perhaps when Sweden overtakes S.Africa as the rape capital of the developed world??? The amount of 14 year old girls gang raped in Europe is DISGUSTING. Not to mention the UK rape scandal where 1400 kids were raped. And i LOL at your second point, Tell that to Japan. More and more of these "service economy" jobs are becoming automated. Japan has robot waiters for fucks sakes. Artificial Intelligence is progressing at a fairly well paced as well. The only reason they want more immigrants is because there governments view it as a way to cover the hole in their Social Security programs down the line.

The Ukrainian refugees are actual refugees fleeing a war. Not the "refugees" storming central europe instead of their neigbhouring countires because they get more social benefits there. Those were econamic refugees. Just look at the footage at 5:54 99% were men, not woman and children Ukrainian refugees are mostly woman and children! Those are the real refugees. I am not saying that men shouldn´t flee, but it is and was suspicious that mostly men between 15 and 30 came and said that they were younger to get more benefits. They should have been those that should have stayed and defended their land. And now we have a subculture in europe were muslims can´t handle our western values so they fight our system to be like the one they were fleeing. Edit: Grammar

Wesly Stanton The way I see it the world will be mixed race in a millennium anyway. Why stop that trend? It's inevitable. So chill. If it doesn't affect you why should you bother to oppose something that cannot and will not be stopped? First World Countries need the extra labor immigrants bring. They have a surplus of human labor and we can use it. Start thinking long term, ignoramus, and just accept that the world is as it is. It's going to develop as it has in the past centuries, the trend is not going to reverse all of a sudden and it shouldn't.

+Alex Spec Yeah we do, also, by coincidence, we've just passed the date of the 10 year "anniversairy" of exactly those drawings being published for the first time. Yup. It's that long ago. And while more than 90 per cent of danish muslims doesn't not wan't to see the drawings reptinted, more then 60 per cent of etnic danish people do. Just to stand up for that freedom of speech. We've been making fun of our own queen, jesus, god, priests, the pope, buddha, and litterally all of the religions of the world. And very few ever burned a flag as a result of that. Until we tried making fun of Islam. That, one billion narrow minded people, couldn't handle. Even though we have tried again - and again, to explain that we make fun of litterally everything, and by not making fun of islam, we'd be singling them out, making it seem more racist/hateful, than if we treated them like we treat everyone else. That is the true curse of the muslim though. Thinking you're being treated differently when you actually aren't.

I'm German, and I can't agree with everything John Oliver said in this segment. The economic and demographic argument of accepting immigrants are well known. Also, Germans are atypically happy to accept at least a certain number of the Syrian refugees since almost all of us have refugees in our families - people that fled from what is now Poland, people displaced by the second world war, later people that fled the GDR. There is great sympathy for the people affected by war. However, it is not true that there are only upsides for the hosting country. In the short term, it has become pretty difficult to get doctor's appointments because the migrants put an additional strain on our health system. We have an existing population of muslims from different ethnic groups and we already see the first squabbles and fights between these groups in Germany. Lastly, while Germany will experience a gradual demographic and cultural change anyway - a slow influx of people from different cultures is unavoidable and not particularly threatening - just dropping a giant group of newcomers with very different cultural attitudes in our country all at once is a challenge of gargantuan proportions. In my daily life, I see many examples of refugees who make a point of being friendly and respectful towards the locals and vice versa, and this is hopeful. However, I think Germany can take a maximum of slightly less than a million all told if we want any hope of integrating most of them in the medium term. And this influx will put a disproportional strain on the poorer population of Germany, who will see most of them arrive in their neighbourhoods.

***** I take your point about Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan who host far more people, but cultural similarity does play a role - at least Jordan and Lebanon's populations speak the same language as the Syrians. And I blame the unnecessary war waged by the so called axis of the willing in Iraq for the current situation. Germany, however, does not bomb Iraq (tried to find a source, this did not happen), and will only send supporting troops (surveillance aircraft), not bombers, to Syria. Edit: We probably sold weapons to most of the different parties involved in the conflict, so I don't see Germany as blameless, but we're pretty slow to deploy the army. Yes, especially the US and the UK (also Poland...) should do more to help the refugees after destabilising the area. I still maintain, for practical reasons, it would not be a good idea for Germany to take in even more refugees. We could not offer them jobs or decent housing in the short term and this would create a problem down the line.

***** Extremely one sided view of European history. Some of the cities on the baltic coast, such as Gdánsk (Danzig) were founded by Germans and went back and forth between Germany, Poland and Russia for centuries. I have no investment in the location of the current or former borders (my granddad had first a Russian,then a Polish, then a German passport and spoke all three of those languages), but it is a fact that there were German people born in parts of what was then the German Reich, e.g. the Baltic coast, that found themselves on Polish territory after the war I take it you are Polish.

And one more thing-God didn’t take seven days to create the world, and by extension, the singularity (that’s what I’m calling it) that the world and everything else came from. It was more like an instant, or just an infinitesimally small amount of time. I’m not exactly sure of the intricacies, but the point is, using concrete isn’t exactly heresy.

Yes, I think he wants it, but that’s because he will always win this game. I’ve seen this behaviour before, where someone pats themselves on the back for wanting to help more asylum seekers whilst lifting themselves up at the thought of being so much better than the racist scum who doesn’t want to; always making sure to keep it off of their own backyard. It’s very easy for someone like him to keep playing this game, since he can always move away when the problems start getting too close to his own backyard. And no, I’m not saying that asylum seekers or immigrants are problems. What I’m saying is that high levels of irresponsible immigration leads to problems with culture clashes, socioeconomic problems, integration issues, etc. It’s a complex issue, and the lack of nuance in this episode comes across as John Oliver patting himself on the back for being better than those racist Europeans...

@aforslow
@aforslow 2 жыл бұрын
@@_ZeroSum_ Did you read my reply to @Hacker Snacker above? No, he didn't mention Sweden in particular. However, the Swedish government had his perspective during the migrant crisis and followed through with the policies he preached, and now we're getting news about murders, gang rapes, bombings, torture robberies, drug maffias, teenage hitmen, etc, etc on a daily basis. Sweden used to be one of the safest places in Europe - now it's quickly becoming the least safe place here. All because of this naive and rather appalling perspective. Through his strawmanning in this episode, it was clear that John Oliver criticized any country that wanted to defend their borders and were anxious of the consequences the 'open borders' kind of policy would lead to. Moreover, he didn't have any critique of the countries that did have this kind of policy, so this episode falls flat as 'open borders' propaganda. It's super easy for people like this to come with critique when they have nothing at stake. If, however, he would suffer the consequences of what he's preaching and see his neighborhood get turned into a ghetto, I'm not so sure he would be so loud. I find it disgusting with people like this, because they have created so much suffering in their quest to look good; all the while silencing concerned people by painting them as evil. And sure, he may be criticizing Trump's immigration policies, etc, but he's actually made a conscious decision to become an American citizen; thus reaping the benefits of the policies that are in place. If he truly felt that these policies were appalling, he could move to a ghetto in Sweden and record his episodes from here. Then he'd get to live what he's so warmheartedly preached for. But no, that's never going to happen, because people like this prioritize looking good over being good. They prefer telling others what to do, rather than doing it themselves. They react with emotions in the moment and fail to see the long-term destruction of their preached policies.

I feel exactly the same pride about Hungary. Obviously not because of the 2 scumbags portrayed (and portrayed ONLY) here but because of all the disciplined and well measured efforts of the Hungarian police and armed forces to defend the country while everyone else was pointing fingers and calling them nazis. Then, many silently doing the same anyways. Ironic and repulsive IMHO. Nonetheless, a country is a country only as long as it can defend its borders. Once that is gone it is not an independent country anymore. I am a Hungarian living in minority just south of the border in Serbia. This gave me a front raw seat in the 2015 migration crisis. I saw swaths of men aged roughly 15 to 50. I barely ever saw women or children. Yet that is all you saw in western media. Just like on this show. I really thought Mr Oliver was smarter than this.

The People of UAE are like small fraction of only the indains. Saudi Arabia has 9 million foreign workers with 17 million saudis. They were about to hold Hajj which means more than 5 million people will visit makkah. They failed because they couldn't handle the big numbers. Saudi Arabia is right now in a war against groups in Yemen who are trying to takeover Yemen. With more than 3 Yemeni people in SA. It's very volatile. Let's not forget they have this weird standoff with Iran. SA is the only country that can handle the refugees but this time in its history it can't get any more unstable and dangerous. You should wish nothing would happen to saudi because sure europe will not wanna have millions of saudi refugees.

I've never disagreed with John so vehemently on any subject before. Furthermore, I'm a personal friend of Mr. Toroczkai, the Hungarian mayor you mocked. He is the most hardworking man I know who is available 24 hours a day to help anybody in town. He will do anything from chopping wood to donating toys and food to poor families. There are times when he doesn't sleep for days because he is so busy. He has done hundreds of hours of community service and labor over the summer in order to keep his town clean and safe. You realise every day in the summer in Hungary there were THOUSANDS of migrants just running through town, trashing everything they saw? Hundreds of migrant men ROBBED, and BROKE into people's houses this summer in Ásotthalom. They stole bicycles and terrified children and caused forest fires! Did you know that the territory of Ásotthalom is a culturally protected habitat, one of the few places in the country practicing traditional farmlife? There are hundreds of rare trees in the area. There was even a day in August when a group of 300 men sat in the middle of one of the main roads and effectively blockaded it, demanding that they are provided buses to Austria. There are photographs of all of these incidents on László's facebook page. Anyone can see them, check for yourself. John, I'm sorry, but I'm deeply disgusted by this video. It is one-sided and rude. It is not funny. It is childish and tacky to the last degree. I would immediately apologise if I were you.

We should welcome them with open arms because they demonstrate initiative and/or need. I DO have a problem with people who leave or flee from their shitty, failing country and then try to make their new, better country more like back home. If your culture made the last country shitty then maybe, just maybe, you should leave your backwards culture behind and adopt the obviously better (or else why would you migrate?) ways of your new homeland.

Sorry but this is just sick. Its not fair how you are showing just one-side of this. Of course the one where Europe is so cruel to them. Where is the other video where they were throwing food and water away? I don't know but if I was desperate and looking for help I would definetly not throw food away!!! If John Oliver is that positive about them ... he should take some refugees home. Greetings from the Czech Republic!

dedeee Mate I'm not saying what they did was right or lawful, they should have complied with regulations. However, I'm saying that if this happened to any normal person, they would not get out due to the circumstances. If the people who have treated you badly all along the trip are asking you to leave a train you have a ticket for, fuck them. Do you really think these refugees had time to check up every law, so that they'd know to get out? No. To them it looked like some police guys were trying to lure them out of their safe train with food. P.S.: I love the ad hominems and the bigotry. It really shows what an intellectual giant you are. By the way, you aren't exactly representing your side well with those lovely pictures you paint. And just as a side note, being proud of living in a country that treats these human beings like shit; not something you should be doing. P.P.S.: I'm not a fan of the media myself, and the coverage has been one sided from the liberals. However, the conservatives like fox aren't exactly being objective now, are they? And at least the liberals don't use photos and videos from 5 years ago to hopelessly try and prove a point.

Defend Europe You said that you "genuinely hope she gets hit by a bus." There aren't many ways to take that, especially when you use the word "genuinely." If you don't mean it that way, it would probably be better to choose something else. Reading intent in text can be tricky, with no inflection or expression to go by, particularly in short sentences.

When discussing the migrant crises there so many issues that needs to be considered. Unfortunately, this week Last Week tonight failed to talk about some major issues. The criticism against the Balkan states and Hungary is valid but historically there have been a lot of religious wars in that area and that might still influence the people. Germany deserves a lot of credit for leading the way with humanitarian motives. My concern in my home nation of Sweden is this in September between 25000-30000 refugees arrived and towards the end between 1200-1500 every day and we are not prepared for these numbers. Yes we can argue that European nations are becoming more racist but I don`t really believe that the majority supports those views. Also, no one is prepared to deal with the real problem, the wars. Humanity I see has a responsibility to act decisively against these terror groups but since no western nation has been attacked no one seems to give a shit. Lastly a question? How many refugees are allowed to enter Russia or USA these are big, rich and powerful nations they should be able to do more I think?

+TheStone To be fair to John, its rather hard to address all the nuances of the situation in under 20 min. Still, I see your points. Ultimately, though, if we do nothing, these people will die. I find it very hard to justify letting that happen under any circumstance. Would one reject Jews fleeing from the holocaust, citing "cultural heritage" or some other nationalistic nonsense?
@apoorvswarup
@apoorvswarup 8 жыл бұрын
+TheStone you see the refugees (don't know how apt that definition is considering they can pretty much roam across Europe without any regard for laws) have been surprisingly given the absolute right to decide which country they go to (which is absurd if one considers the dublin agreement) Cut your benefits policy (like denmark) and you will see their numbers automatically go down. Its not whether these refugees are allowed to enter the US or Russia (am pretty sure no one would want to enter Russia willingly) but whether they themselves want to go there! The cultural and lingual integration aspects depend and I am not going dwell on that too much but I do hope the swedish government ensures that ghettos like rosengard aren't created and that the immigrants are truly integrated into the society.

+Wayward Chronicler agreed. i think people should realize that people's personalities are created by their environment. everyone who's talking about how bad the behaviour of these people are should remember that, if we were born there, we would probably be their exact replica. while i do think this crisis is more complicated than what this episode talks about, people seem to miss the basic message of this episode, that we shouldn't leave these people to simply die. we at least owe that much as fellow human beings.

+TheStone I am 100% with you, this is not a topic to be discussed in less than 20 minutes. I now see a lot of other videos from a different perspective. I often thought that the US has some redicilous rules but maybe this was just one side of the medal - just as this video? Don't get me wrong, John Oliver is not my compensational-news or -panel show but this show was just very partial and did not make fun of real bad decisions. Like the budget cut in the refugee-camps around syria. The EU cut the budget from already-ridiculous 150 Mio to 75 Mio which was leading to starvation there. A lot of right-wing parties voted for this cut. I mean saving 75 Mio....that is nothing on a european level.

+TheStone Well, after you pass through this large number of refugees they will eventually be of a benefit to your country, and decades later they will be more proud to be swedish than being syrians. Syrians are genius hard working people, they will defiantly help build the country more than it already is.

Turkey is like any other country really. But they are struggling with the influx of refugees from across the border, citizens from a country that culturally and historically have had issues with the Turks. While the border is "secure", it isn't anyway far away enough from ISIS and the wars in the region as they'd like to be.

I don't know why the focus on this episode was all about Europe when virtually all developed countries (except for Jordan) have done a terrible job of taking in immigrants. Particularly the wealthy countries in the Middle East that share a very similar culture have taken a grand total of zero Syrian immigrants. Almost the whole world has failed to treat these people the with the dignity and respect they deserve.
@aamnahere6250

Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey have all taken millions of refugees. And while they definitely should make the process easier for refugees to work, you're forgetting that Jordan and Lebanon already have a big Palestinian refugee population for decades. These aren't developed countries and it's not like they're only deliberately withholding resources from refugees. These countries have a serious crisis of providing for their own people unlike many countries like Germany, France and Britain. Also, Europe did play a role in destabilizing not just Syria but Asia as a whole and I don't know why you think destabilizing an entire region for decades with endless neo-colonialist wars does not make most European countries culpable. Sure, few neutral countries like Switzerland might not be politically culpable but the majority of European countries very much are and it's frankly disturbing how you want to deny that culpability and make it all about 'those not so good Arab countries not taking other Arab refugees' when the reality is far more complex and nuance on that front and a lot more sinister on the part of Americans and their European allies.

@@aamnahere6250 Yes, 100%! I'm from Sweden and we're a tiny country who took in wayyyyy too many refugees (not that taking in many refugees is an issue, but we were not able to provide them with housing!) because other European countries did not carry their weight. As you said, countries in the middle-east take in millions of refugees, despite the other crises they're dealing with. Europe is an extremely developed and privileged continent, so the focus should definitely be on US and not on the neighbouring middle-eastern countries who are already doing so much.

I’m Hungarian. In my hometown (Szeged), people were very welcoming and generous to all migrants and refugees. They got food and drink when arrived and help how to get to the train station where they got free tickets to get to the capital city. Not all of us are such violent and personally I feel ashamed for what those people did and what the government did was absolutely wrong. On the other hand, there are many reports and rumours about incidents in which locals get insulted or attacked. Many of them are afraid to go near those people. The bottom line is, both side have their own “monsters” and it is our governments tasks to sort these issues out with dignity and effectively. These conflicts will happen over and over again if no organised effort is made to resolve this massive event. This is where countries should start working together and not playing ridiculous games who, when and how wants to leave a community which was by the way founded to prevent the next war within the continent which started with differences between different ethnic groups within country borders.... sounds familiar???
