OH I thought the title said "changes the set." I was expecting a bizarre story of Milton Berle rearranging the furniture.

Berle was a vaudevillian whose star rose and fell on television from 1948 to 1953. His ego and self-image were the downfall in his later years. The times changed but he didn't and he must have suffered because of it.

He was a world-class a hole.

That explains why the original SNL cast didn't exactly have favourable opinions about him from when he came to host in April 1979. His style of comedy was very wrong for that type of show.

@@bluebear1985 I don’t remember much about that episode and why it was so controversial. I do, however, remember laughing my ass off at Berle’s opening monologue. Most memorable was on old retirees in FL: “They were so old; the average age was deceased.”

Sounds like Milton Berle had the same inexplicable clout at NBC New York that Bob Hope had at NBC Burbank when he would crash _The Tonight Show_ to Johnny Carson's annoyance. Those guys were legends but that didn't mean they could just do what they wanted decades after their prime.
@RichV202 жыл бұрын
Bob Hope was still sort of a lovable legend in the early 90s whereas Milton Berle didn't have that same love and was loathed, especially after his disastorous SNL hosting gig in the late 70s.
@ErisRising Жыл бұрын
@@RichV20 Problem is that there was one person at NBC who hated Hope, and that was Carson. He thought that Hope was a terrible guest who could only do his scripted material, which led to stale, rehearsed-sounding interviews. Unfortunately for him, Hope was the single individual talent at NBC who had more pull than he did, so Carson had to suffer through it till retirement.

Berle was one of the great monsters of show business. There should have been a magazine devoted to their celebration, edited by Forrest J. Ackerman. Featured would be Mickey Rooney, Joan Crawford, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Wallace Beery, Lou Costello- and many more manipulative, devious, and downright abusive characters.
