Back in July 2019, I flew on one of Canadian North's Boeing 737-200s, C-GOPW, for the last time on a day trip between Edmonton and Yellowknife with some good friends of mine.
In honour of OPW's recent retirement from Canadian North, I wanted to share this takeoff footage, which has some of the best JT8D engine sounds I've ever heard, not to mention a pretty long takeoff roll!
Enjoy the sights and sounds of this 737-200, making a late rotation off of runway 16 at YZF, on a particularly muggy day!

It was excellent..I love the screaming engines of the 732 and 727..Do you also have the landing? THey do a great spool-up, idle and then thrust-reverse that's a killer?

In case anyone is wondering, that tube extending forward from underneath the engine is a vortex dissipater. These prevent a vortex forming at the engine intakes which could cause gravel to be ingested by engine. These consist of a small forward projecting tube which blows pressure regulated (55psi) engine bleed air down and aft from 3 nozzles at the tip to break up the vortices.

And this is the reason 737-200s are still in use in Northern Canada. They're the only models to offer this feature. The nose wheel also has a gravel deflector behind it, essentially a kind of mud flap.

@@MattCampbelificationMost gravel airstrips are too short to support those planes, as they usually land at airports such as Heathrow or JFK, where the runways are paved. Basically, there’s no demand for a gravel kit on those planes.

Every plane as a value with how much tailwind it can still take off. But you're right this was really close to the 1000 feed marking on the run way.

~3kt tailwind isn't enough to negatively affect performance and allowed them to fly a more direct route (taking off to the south vs. having to climb northbound and wait for radar vectors), saving fuel.

Tailwind limitation is 10 knots for take-off or landing. Slight tailwind taken into account in take-off performance calculations. Yes, performance calculations are done before every take-off. Nothing to worry about.

This reminds me of my childhood, since I used to fly on Boeing 737-200 back then with Sriwijaya Air. When I hear that roaring sound during take-off, that window view of the tiny engine, ahh just like the good old days…

lovely old fashioned Boeing sound similar to what you would hear on a 707 - last time I flew on a 737 200 was on Canadian/Canadien between YYC and YVR leaving Calgary in sub -20c conditions many years ago pre 2000

Normal rotation in my experience they were using reduced thrust to save engine wear. 100% normal procedure

Nope - listen to the engines. Not a reduced thrust takeoff at all. I'd wager somewhere around 2.10-2.15-ish EPR range. Not firewalled by any means but not really in the "reduced power range," either. In fact it's pretty typical. The video description makes it pretty clear that it was a muggy July day, however.

In 1989, I flew C-GSPW from Yellowknife to Resolute. The take off roll was VERY slow and the plane,with the front fully loaded with cargo was visibly working hard to hard to slowly gain altitude. No quick rise near vertical for noise abatement such as when leaving large cities :-). When I saw your video with you boarding front door, I knew your take off would be quite normal :-)

Hey, I have a suggestion: Flair announced that they would begin services from Grande Prairie (CYQU) to Vancouver and Toronto. Inaugural flight is planned in August (idk exact date). I was wondering if you could do a trip report type of vlog as personally I would find it interesting being a resident of Grande Prairie.

Only been on 2 flights of a -200 and loved them. The sound of JT8D's was music to my ears, and seeing the thrust reverse 'bucket' in action was so cool!

My last 737-200 flight. Was HOU-DAL-AMA. Early 2005 SWA. My younger brother and sister and i were on it. Sitting in the seats facing each other. I told them to enjoy it. Because it would be the last time any of us would be in a 200. By summer they all were gone. They both loved the loud jet engines and clamshell reversers. What a treat! And a great flight.

I experienced a takeoff like that once. It was on board a fully-loaded 737 from Toronto to Montreal, and was with the now-defunct carrier Canadian Airlines. It seemed we were rolling for so long, and eating up so much runway, that toward the end of the run people were starting to whisper nervously amongst themselves, as in, "Are we ever going to get off the ground?" A moment later, there was a discernible rise in engine pitch (more power applied), then we abruptly rotated and I looked down just to see the end of the runway passing beneath us. I suspect to this day it was a case of incorrect initial thrust settings for the payload we were carrying. Needless to say, it was quite uncomfortable while it was happening!

I remember working these as a flight attendant for United. It was so funny that we had to hold our ears for takeoff as those jt8s would howl!! But a great plane! We used to fly them into all the smaller towns and cities across the US , Canada and Mexico. The good ole days!😝👍🏽

I was there when UA first flew the -100 into PHF. Some 'genius' in marketing decided it would be a great idea to configure the A/C 24F/67Y . At least they replaced the DC-6 & Viscount in the small station market. Sometimes had to make an enroute fuel stop PHF-ORD due to fuel requirements at ORD.

Western, Delta, United, Continental, U.S. Air, South West, & America West. I've experienced flights with the 737-200's with all 7 of those carriers back in the day. So retien then, now I miss them.

I have flown on CN. I think some of those planes are almost as old as me. (edit late 50's) Some don't just have 'doublers' but 'triple' patches.

Late rotation due to taking off with the wind instead of into it. Check the wind sock at the start of the roll. Also the Buffalo Lockheed that he waited on before joining the runway was taking off into the wind. Interesting!!!

The runway is over 7500 ft long. Longer than LGA's runways in NYC.Maybe the crew did a flex (reduced power) take off?? Remember Alaska Airlines use to fly 737-200's into Dutch Harbor when it had a 3900 ft runway.Now that would have been exciting....

Nope - by the pitch of the fan it sounded like it was somewhere in the 2.10 - 2.15-ish EPR range. Alaska sure did fly the 737 out of PADU - but I'm going to guess that it was a weight-restricted takeoff (translation: not a lot of load and not a lot of fuel, so the next stop better be close and have a longer runway) and I'm also going to guess that a tradeoff was more flaps. More flaps means you can get off the ground sooner, but it also means more drag and less speed, which means reduced performance in the second segment climb. Not a huge issue with a light load over open water. Most people don't realize that the goal is to use as little flap and as much runway as is feasible because every little bit of extra energy helps the climb performance that much more. I'd imagine that a 73S departing LGA in the middle of July would probably be a little more weight-restricted than one departing Yellowknife, and I'd also bet that they'd still do their best to use as much of the runway as they could get away with. Anyway... I don't think this rotation was particularly late, I think the camera field of view makes it seem like the airplane was still on the ground when it wasn't. The plane was airborne by the aiming points (1,000 feet to the end of the runway). I also think it was a fairly shallow initial climb (which makes sense in July). The margins are definitely a lot easier to make with modern high-bypass engines - but they're just not as charming, are they?

It’s what’s called a gravel kit and it means it helps from rocks dirt etc from getting in the engine

Vortex disapator, it is used for gravel runway operations, it ejects engine bleed air to disrupt any vortex generated by the engine intake that could suck in debris

ahh the baby 8's sound of little fan blades beating in the tubes. As to why still flying, Canada allows the stage 3 noise in remote locations and these airframes were under utilized early in life so they haven't reached their 75,000 hour limits yet?

Nothing wrong with the rotation. AC lifted off 1400 feet from the end, and rotation began about 2500 feet from the end, based on the runway markings. Everything legal respecting balanced field length.

Without seeing the ASI or knowing the Vr it looked absolutely normal. 737-200 is an amazing machine.

Damn that was a very long roll given YZF doesn't have the longest of runways. Looks like you only had a positive rate of climb about 300 m from the end of the runway. Only 6 days of 737-200C ops left at Canadian North. May 6, 2023 is the final curtain call. Aircraft is supposed to ferry YZF-YEG on the 7th for retirement.

Not that close but I can see how people would be alarmed. The tail wing would have stretched the run out so its expected. Nice catch withe C17 and Buffalo L 188. I miss flying the old 200 from when I live in Whitehorse flying to Vancouver and back 2 or 3 times a week back in the 70s and 80s. You even git propper food in real dishes with real cutlery vack then. Chicken flying to Vancouver and steak to Whitehorse.

Oh the sound of that good ol' JT8D-15 just screamin' away..........at idle....🤣... I DO NOT miss working on those old engines...The wire harnesses on those things were alway soaked in engine oil... If it wasn't leaking oil, that means it was out of oil...😂... JT8D's made more noise than they did power... I have a few pieces of turbine blades that were blown out the back end of one motor that suffered a compressor stall during maintenance engine run ups... they make good paper weights for my paperwork and great conversation starters... Damn 737-200's couldn't move out of there own way when the plane was loaded, but took off like a rocket empty (two pilots, two mechs, one insp) for test flights... Man those test flights were awesome!!!

C-GOPW uses the more powerful JT8D-17, not the -15.

@@viscount757 "more powerful" technically you are correct, but really... should say a just a slight bit more powerful... -15's run Max Thrust @ 15,550 lbf. -17's run Max Thrust between 16,000-16,400 lbf. Either way, JT8D's still make more noise than power...🤣

It's not a probe. I can't remember what it's called, but because these jets sometimes have to land on gravel runways up in the far north, they can't allow anything to get into the engines or clog up the landing gear. What you saw takes the bleed from the engines & shoots it downward to prevent gravel from entering it. There is also a gravel pan on the front landing gear which is used to stop gravel from shooting up all over the place. Hope this helps.

Vortex disapator, it is used for gravel runway operations, it ejects engine bleed air to disrupt any vortex generated by the engine intake that could suck in debris

The 200s are pretty much the workhorses of the north because they can actually use the gravel and rugged runways.

Flex T/o, HGW, Tailwind no ICP proceedure. Liftoff point was ok but 1st segment pref degraded by Tailwind.
