You know Disco can be Funky. Even though Disco killed live music in the late 70's you gotta appreciate the Funky/Disco guitar parts on those Disco songs. Are you with me?

Thanks brutha - and oh yeah, I can dig. I guess I really L-O-V-E everything leading up until the big disco ball started spinning. Once the greasy sweat was wiped off by the record industry (stepping in to make a buck), the sound of what was actually "funk" changed, then it quickly became more mainstream and eventually mutated into disco. This mutation seems to happen to funk every 5-7 years (or so). It's always there and lurking around somewhere, but when it makes a noticeable mainstream comeback - usually in a mutated form - it's usually quite different than what my ears actually want. I want that sweaty late '60s-mid-70s funk, keepin' it raw and real. Everything else is cool from every decade, but at the end of the day, THAT'S the time period and style of funk I want in my life. Anywho...thanks broseph and I hope to make it down to your neck of the woods sooner or later - it would be great to catch up! Peace...

Priceless lesson! The AWB stayed at my father's house in London, UK, when they first came down to London in 71, along with founding members of The Blockheads. Their first LP did nothing and they were dismayed ... then they got a support slot for Eric Clapton @ The Rainbow and were seen by a BBC guy, who got them onto The Old Grey Whistle Test (Our Midnight Special) which was then seen by Jerry Wexler, who in turn asked them over to your side of the pond, wherein they signed to Atlantic and ... the rest is history! Unfortunately, they all overdosed on snowballs @ Sonny and Cher's party and lost their original drummer, Robbie Mcintosh, who was funky as F... but the show rolled on.

Im constantly using the"Hendrix" 70's chord. It just feels natural to me, which reminds me on maybe doing a LNL on Paul Kossoff. The song "Mr.Big" came to mind. He is another great one on my list. A good vibrato fretting hand lesson for us👍. Thanks again brother!

Funk guitar: "like the Beverly Hillbillies going to a commercial"!? WTF! A metaphor like no other! Brewster, you're one unique dude! NIce funk riffage though! A crucial and underused element (especially among rock guitarists) in hip phrasing.

"Everything (instrument) is drums".James Brown
@aylbdrmadison10514 жыл бұрын
He's not wrong. If the rhythm isn't there as a base, it's never gonna sound good no matter what anyone plays. The first thing I tell any student who wants to learn to play lead guitar is they will have to be better at rhythm than the rhythm player. It's also not often I see a guitarist take up drums and sound good almost immediately, whereas the opposite is really common. One of the best drummers I ever played with had no idea of how any scale, chord, inversion, or lick of any sort was constructed, yet when he would walk by a piano he would play some wicked line that I would spend the next month trying to memorize and be able to play, only to later find out he was "accidentally" using all sorts of complex jazz lines using chord substitutions and passing tones that made sense more often than not (and rarely sticking to C Major).
