I don;t think people consider lower level play enough; if the best players can do it, it doesn't mean everyone can, meaning it could kill low levels which stops them from feeding into higher ones. If there aren't people willing to play there weeklies and face off Steve, a lot less people will try and go into top level play. If Mkleo can beat a Steve no problem is a different question to if yoshilover69 at a weekly can. I feel like hes more of a low level demon that a lot of players won't go out of there way to learn how to beat when they play for fun, thus eventually possibly killing the game from the lower levels instead of top level.

This exactly, based on the info we have he's a lower and mid tier demon. And that would kill off both a lot new blood into the game. But beyond that if we'd assume DD's list is gospel it would force a large amount of player to get a specific secondary specifically for Steve and than play rather obnoxious with them. And a character forcing that would also be bad from a spectator POV. And the very limited counters to Steve also forces a very limited character selection.

@@relo999 yeah I know, it was mainly a joke. Honestly though I don't think Steve is as bad a low-skill competitive killer as you think. Maybe a counter-pick meta will develop around the lower levels, but with time I'm sure the US will gain a similar level understanding level will go up, and the knowledge from higher skill players will trickle down into lower-level play. I just think that the competitive scene needs to push and eventually Steve will still be a top-tier, but a beatable one.

And as for counterpick meta, assuming DD's list as gospel truth, would create a very, for lack of a better word, inbred character selection just to deal with Steve especially at mid and lower level players. Because realistically is someone's secondary as good as their main? In most cases not really, especially not outside top play meaning lower and mid level players either need to pick up Steve themselves or one of their counter-picks just to be somewhat competitive. Time will tell really. I'm certainly not in the full on "ban steve" camp, but also not in the "no issue at all" camp. More the "need to watch out and be cautious" and "dont hyper focus on top level play" camp. As only a small minority of players are actually top level players to begin with.

I think another reason people want him banned, on top of the fact that he’s one of the best characters in the game, is just the overall hate that was shown back when he was revealed and released almost two years ago. The community has this mentality of Minecraft shouldn’t be in Smash because it’s a game for kids… Besides the fact that 1. It’s the best selling game in the world, of course it‘s gonna see representation in Smash eventually. And 2. Smash has series like Mario, Kirby and Pokémon in it, which most of the general public would assume their target audience is also kids.

Going to be honest, I do agree with this. Like, if Steve should be banned because he's the best, shouldn't all the top tiers be banned since they will become the best the more we ban other characters? Yes, Steve is inheritly STUPIDLY powerful, but then we have characters like Pikachu who can loop literally everyone, Luigi who can 0 to death you even if you DI (and he's not even top tier) etc. Point is, banning Steve would make no sense unless we ban others too cause there's other characters with broken tools as well

After seeing if Steve is banworthy, he's really not. Since I main Isabelle, some would say she's invalid to handle Steve at a top play level, but to counter that, you have to realize much of Isabelle's toolkit and how it can really counter a lot of Steve's moves. For example, one of Isabelle's biggest moves to handle Steve, at best, is pocket. Sure, Steve can invalid a lot of Isabelle's moves easily, but if you can play her toolkit precisely and defensively, it can be more of an even game against Steve. The playstyle to handle Steve with Isabelle is playing a safe aggressive game on him. Meaning, you would have to find openings in Steve's gameplan and once you found that opening, then you can go crazy ham on him and hoping there's percentage to kill him. It's still about learning the MU for all characters and if you can tell me what's my experience against Steve, my chances to win against him is pretty even. It can go either in Isabelle's favor or Steve's favor

People honestly have have bad advantage states and either don't know how to pressure Steve or overextend against him way too much. A lot of people do something I like to call "fake pressure" where they'll try to bait options from him by empty hopping at him or something only get utilted into oblivion. Steve's midrange game is actually garbage. His only options to contest midrange are dash attack, grab, and Minecart, which consumes resources, which brings me to another point: you can put pressure on his resources as well. A lot of his good moves are resources dependent. By making himnwaste his materials, you are limiting how good of a character he can become. Also, Steve's retreating game is heavily bolstered by his blocks. He has very little odds retreating options that are both fast, and hit a grounded opponent. He has jab/ftilt/sword bair, which doesn't do much in a situation where he is running away from you. Because of this, a lot of Steves will Minecart or up B to get past you, go for strong moves like Anvil or fsmash, pivot grab or dash attack to hit you away, or build a wall. All but one of these options are committal. So as long as you stay low to the ground while pursuing him, you don't have to worry as much about bair. If people would stop complaining and actually do their homework, Steve counterplay would actually exist here.

I play Ridley, Steve, and Sephiroth and Steve’s biggest weakness is definitely large, fast, disjoints Sephiroth does pretty well against Steve since f air and f tilt outrange his grab which is his best decent range move Ridley does surprisingly okay since f tilt is fast and strong at the tipper I know a lot of people don’t want to watch Steve gameplay but as long as you know to stay away from up tilt because it’s perfectly balanced doing 8 percent a hit and comboing 7 times, stay away from grab since the 0 to 70 or death, a lot of moves can break Steves minecart and try to keep him in the air when he’s out of iron since all he can really do is airdodge. I play Sephiroth so I don’t have to deal with aiming up airs
