The worst character you know won a Smash tournament (it’s not Steve)

With the Smash Ultimate ranking season coming to an end, many of the strongest competitors in the world were looking for their last shot to improve their ranking for the first half of 2023. And what better way to close it out with one of the biggest events of the whole year, the 878 entrant Canadian Super Major, Get On My Level 2023.
Despite being in a Top 8 filled with players who have won majors this year, it was a player that has consistently come up short that ended up taking home the whole bracket. This is how Sonix (the player) overcame his adversaries and claimed Sonic’s (the character) first major WIN in over a year.

Small correction - you said Sonix knew Leo wouldn't fall for the fsmash again, that fsmash is actually a guaranteed confirm off the very late nair Sonix landed in the first game. In that final game, the nair hit was too early, so he could only get bair, so he decided to risk going for a reaction to Leo's airdodge knowing that the bair wouldn't have killed.

Mainly wrong as Sonix dashed back not expecting the nair to hit there as that fsmash was also guaranteed game 3 but since he didn’t react in time he preferred to wait out an option and reset but fsmash after seeing the airdodge

It's such a shame that Sonic is so good as camping. Sonic's aggressive tools and combos are pretty cool. IMO, when a Sonic isn't camping, he's actually a fun character to watch; and even when he does camp it's still sometimes pretty good. I just feel bad that Sonix gets so much hate, he's really really good at the game, and it's not his fault that Sakurai doesn't know how to consistently design good characters.

Sonix just happened to be that guy because (as his name implies) he is a fan of Sonic in general. He probably would've played Sonic even if he wasn't that good. This game has more poorly designed characters than good ones. You could point fingers at any one of them. Complain that the game is bad all you want, but don't take it out on the players. Either appreciate what top level play is in this game, or go find a different game to watch.

I mainly dislike watching sonic because all his moves look about the same to me as a casual viewer. I can't complain about any camping or timeouts given that I root for Hungrybox in both ultimate and melee.

At least Hbox has to play neutral. Sonic taps B and controls half the screen with no counterplay besides waiting for him to be done. And then he just does it again. The priority on side-B is absurd and you'll be lucky to clank off it instead of missing entirely and eating a combo. Ult is one of my favorite games, but the fact that people play this game competitively is some kind of cruel self-inflicted punishment.

Honestly I love Sonic’s playstyle in theory. The idea of a character that is so fast that they gain uncontested control over the tempo of the match is awesome, and I don’t mind Sonic using his speed defensively rather than just offensively. If you could go faster than the speed of sound, you’d be really good at dodging blows too. The issue is the execution. Besides just being kind of basic (especially the dual Spin Dashes), I feel like the main issue is that he has too much vertical movement. I don’t mean he should have poor vertical recovery, but the sheer amount of ways he can get above the stage and stay there is just annoying. He can play defense, just make him a more grounded fighter and focus more on dashing through attacks than jumping past.

So not only did he show how petty he can be with the timeout playstyle, he also inadvertently admitted it sucks to play against. This GOML Sonix is different from the Sonix we saw most recently at Smash Con. And we can't act like that is the only time. Before GOML it's was mostly the same. That's the first tourney whr I actually watched most of his matches because he was flowing and not going for sonic cheese. Nbs the shit he did at Smash Con is deadass some of the same shit my 7 year old nephew.

I dont think he cares HOW he lost, just that he DID lose, and for 25th. Besides, when he unplugged, he was already 100% lost. It was 15 seconds left with him down a full stock. It was impossible to win in that scenario, not even just unlikely, literally impossible. Also, Sonix plays to win. Thats how the game is played. You dont have to like it, but if you really hate it that much, either dont watch it, or go play a different game if you really cant stand it. Nobody is forcing you to watch. And yea, it can be frustrating to play against, but this is a tournament. Theyre playing to win. Dont hate the player, hate the game. Besides, some people actually like watching sonic anyways. I personally do myself because I like how intense timeouts actually get, and all the decision making that goes into the few neutral interactions that actually occur, because even a single instance can swing the match. Going for a timeout with a lead, slip up, and suddenly you're the one getting timed out. Thats the exciting part about them. Not for everyone, and thats fine, but its still subjective as to whether or not its enjoyable to watch. And if you really wanna talk about cringy 7 year old behavior, the people who hate on others because they dont like how they play a childrens party game are definitely way cringier. So learn to stop hating people over a video game. You dont have to like the character or the playstyle, but keep it to the character, and dont bring that hate towards the player. Its how the game is played, and if you cant handle that, maybe competitive smash isnt for you.

Idk what you mean. Maybe I just like patience but I find the slower playstyles are just better than fast ones. If you play reactive and defensive you force approaches. It's why I just played Min Min and Gunner. Sonix is a master of tempo and it makes him a lot more interesting than other players to watch personally.

Sonic is not an endurance character. He's simple with low APM, accuracy, and risk. Controlling corridors around the opponent instead of being direct + spin camping is not draining, especially when variations can be chosen at random with little to no consequence.

In the context of a tournament and the fact that he can’t just always auto win just bc he has the lead makes him more of an endurance character than most if not all glass canon characters like Pichu and Fox Even with his spins, he’s still a light character and is whiff punishable due to his hitboxes not being disjointed Playing the character alone is draining and you can’t expect any Sonic player to always win despite even having a stock lead lol
