My mom, a (now retired) nurse caught an irregular mole in me (she still gives us checks) and caught early melanoma on herself and my dad. Early detection is so important with cancer. I live in Korea and just had a series of free cancer screenings from my national health insurance. If eligible people don’t get them and get cancer, the insurance won’t cover costs (or some costs).

It's crazy how the worst luck possible often coincides with the best. Like...you have to be pretty unlucky to get cancer, especially at such a young age (although melanoma is one of the more common cancers in America and other nations with a high prevalence of Caucasian people), but then you have to have *amazingly GOOD luck* for the coincidence that happened that night in October to occur (that the mole was uncovered at the right time for the right person to notice it and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT), and also pretty lucky for the cancer to be in its infancy (in situ, meaning it hasn't spread to deeper skin tissues). My mother has a similar story - she had a dermatologist appointment for something innocuous like dermatitis or something, but she did have this weird little spot on her arm that she was not even concerned about...just thought "well, while I'm here, might as well point it out." The doctor didn't think it was a problem, but she did a biopsy anyway because why not? Better safe than sorry. And then like, a week later, she got a call confirming a referral to a cancer clinic, because the biopsy revealed Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). This cancer is about 100X rarer than melanoma, but also almost 5X deadlier (being the most dangerous skin cancer you can get). It's so rare that her GP had no idea what it was or how to recognize it - he would never have known she had it if it wasn't for the conscientiousness of the dermatologist. And like with Red, her cancer was also caught in situ, although the intervention was a bit more extreme due to the nature of the cancer (she had a large area, plus the associated sentinel lymph node removed about 3 weeks after diagnosis and sent for pathology to accurately assess its potential spread). Ever since then (April 2018), she goes back for yearly appointments with a specialist, just to make sure it hasn't grown back...30% of people diagnosed with this cancer are dead within 5 years, and that includes a bunch of people who caught it early and acted aggressively to counter it, so nobody's taking any chances. Bad luck to get a super-rare, super-deadly cancer...exceptional luck for it to be discovered extremely early, by sheer coincidence of being in the right place at the right time and taking the right action. Her experience has led me to take preventative healthcare a lot more seriously. For example, given my family's extensive history of colon cancer and pre-cancerous polyps, I pestered my GP to refer me for a colonoscopy last year (the year I turned 40 - most people won't have their first colonoscopy until they're at least 50) - he kept insisting it wasn't necessary, and that the risks of the procedure probably outweighed the potential benefits, but I was adamant. And actually, the gastroenterologist who performed the colonoscopy was pretty clear that I had done the right thing in seeking this procedure, noting that with my history, it was actually recommended to get a scope at 40, just in case (as that's the age when polyps start to develop in people prone to them). Nobody WANTS to do a colonoscopy...the bowel prep alone was horrendous, and getting a giant tube shoved where the sun don't shine is no picnic. But I like living and want to keep living, and if that means having this unpleasant procedure, so be it...and fortunately, my colon was given a clean bill of health (though the gastroenterologist recommends repeating it in 5 years). By being vigilant (not paranoid, just...appropriately prudent) about your health, you can in fact INCREASE the chance of having one of these "bad news, good news" situations occur...instead of it just being "bad news, worse news."
