Excellent ! Though Mary Shelley didn’t call him a Dr. She describes him as a medical student studying the natural sciences, my middle school English teacher who was sick to death of having to teach this book said, ok class here we go. This is the first recorded version of this classic one liner joke “ what’s the difference between God and a doctor? God doesn’t think he’s a doctor”. I thought he was so chill. Until my Mom had to go to both the Principals office and a meeting of the PTA, when later that year we had to write a book report on a book we were reading outside of class. I wrote mine on Kurt Vonnegut’s Welcome to the Monkey House. Apparently according to the upright citizens brigade of my small hometown, that wasn’t suitable literature for a 12 year old. My Mom really let all of them have a piece of her mind…. Something about only Nazi’s and morons ban books, I had an out of body experience watching my Mom yell at my Principal … kind of a Jr High version of Godzilla vs Mothra.

Not a complaint or correction- I just thought this was an interesting bit of trivia about the Stuart Little movie. According to Wikipedia: “ One of the paintings used as set dressing for the Littles' home was Hungarian avant garde painter Róbert Berény's 1920s painting Sleeping Lady with Black Vase, which had long been considered lost. A set designer for the film had purchased the painting at an antiques store in Pasadena, California for $500 for use in the film, unaware of its significance. In 2009, art historian Gergely Barki, while watching Stuart Little on television with his daughter, noticed the painting, and after contacting the studios was able to track down its whereabouts.[7] In 2014, its owner sold the painting at an auction for €229,500.”

I just love the fact that Seth added to the ending of Stuart Little so his kids wouldn't be disappointed. My father loved to sing Puff the Magic Dragon to us when my sibs and I were little kids but I always found the ending to be sad. So he wrote an extra verse to make it happy and I still sing it at the end whenever I hear the song. I know classic works shouldn't be changed but screw it, sometimes little kids need to feel more secure in an ever changing and often frightening world, and a father who adds a new ending to cheer them up or bring them closure before they fall asleep at night is a beautiful thing. It also teaches children that they have the power to write their own ending when they don't like what the world hands them. If you don't have closure for something, then take it into your own hands and bring about that closure yourself. If the world makes you sad then find a way to add a new verse and make it happy again. I'm SO glad to find out my dad isn't the only one willing to change the ending and make a child's night a little better. You're a great guy and an amazing father!

@@kayapapaya the extra verse was: One day ten years later Puff heard a sound with joy. And standing there outside his cave was Jackie's little boy. Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sails And he would keep a lookout perch on Puff's gigantic tail. Then it would go into the refrain and finish the song. I loved the way it made it happier, and also the feeling that Puff would live forever as a story passed down through the family and each new generation would get to play with him.

Seth today with the big reveal that the Sloth may have been "A man in a sloth suit." Meanwhile over at Last Week Tonight, John Oliver reminded us last week, "Is this man a furry? The clues are all there." So who was the man in the Sloth suit? John Fuckin' Oliver (And yes, that is his middle name). That's the real reason Seth won't have any animals on the show: he's too afraid they might stage a late night coup. Seth's already got enough to worry about with Wally constantly snapping on his heels, so he just has a "No Animals" policy to keep sneaky little John from surprising him. No, if John Oliver is going to be on the show, he's going to be in plain sight, and sitting in the guest chair where he belongs. But hey, that's just a theory. A Jackal Theory! Thanks for reading.

Before anyone complains, yes, alliteration is a kind of rhyme. It is alternatively known as head rhyme, or initial rhyme.
@ScapegoatLoveWarrior2 жыл бұрын
And assonance?
@puellanivis2 жыл бұрын
@@ScapegoatLoveWarrior Resources I find suggest… maybe? At the very least, all rhymes are assonance, but I don’t think I could accept a definition that says all assonance is rhyme. Placing the two terms as pure synonyms seems unnecessary, and assonance clearly has the potential to be applied to places where rhyme is inappropriate. Partial rhymes are for sure still assonance, but should they be considered rhymes? “vox” and “tom” share a vowel, but don’t even share consonant properties! I would have a hard time saying these rhyme in any way… that is, unless an author made it deeply clear that this assonance was not accidental but intended: “Tom caught† a rock fox on a log.” Is there rhyme in this piece? †: N.B.: I am in the caught-cot merger, so “caught” shares the thematic vowel here.

That's what sells it as a real letter for me. I thought it was a graphics department fake until I saw it. In the olden days before computers, when it would have been hand typed on a manual typewriter, in informal settings such as this letter misspellings were more tolerated because otherwise White (or more likely his personal secretary) would have to retype that whole letter over again due to a minor grammar mistake.

Correction: you can’t rip out just the last three pages, you would be ripping them out in even numbers since there are two pages to a sheet of paper. Unless your book ends with a blank page at the end, which would be odd, but even then a blank page is still a page.

If a book ends with a blank page, it would indeed be odd.
@Trevin_Taylor2 жыл бұрын
@@bg6b7bft more common than you think. Some publishing uses essentially groups of leaves rather than individual pages. The leaves are put in the book in groups. If the manuscript doesn’t end exactly in the right number they would still have extra pages as part of the group. I know a publisher who does all pages in groups of 8, so if your book ended on the 65th leaf there would be 7 blank pages. This really only effects large hardbacks, but it happens.

A semicolon would be more grammatically correct. (Of course, this is not really true, and E. B. White would surely agree with your choice. From Elements of Style: "A comma is preferable when the clauses are very short and alike in form, or when the tone of the sentence is easy and conversational.")
