As someone who has actually studied hypnotherapy- it is impossible to make someone do something that they don’t want to do under hypnosis. Hypnosis is just taking a person into the theta brainwave state, which is a normal and natural state that humans go in and out of naturally everyday. It’s just a brainwave state that is easier to connect with and change the subconscious mind from. It is not “magic” and, again, no one can make you do anything that you don’t want to do when you are hypnotized. (Regarding stage shows, those people VOLUNTEERED to go on stage, they know what is expected of them and they aren’t doing anything that they wouldn’t do while drunk.)

To everyone who thinks hypnotism can occur without consent: it can. Hypnosis is a normal brain state. No one “consents” to road hypnosis, so it absolutely can happen without consent. People can be influenced without their awareness even without hypnosis, and combining that with hypnosis only increases the speed at which you can influence them. If suggestions are gradual and acceptable enough to the subject, they will likely not realize they’re doing something they choose to do. In this case, it’s clear that picking up the check is something Amy enjoys and does often, so influencing her to do that would be very easy for an experienced hypnotist. It’s important to realize that being influenced to do something you generally enjoy is not the same thing as giving consent for someone to manipulate your actions.
