As a Finn I find the whole comparison between forests up here and in Cali completely ridiculous. Finland is in the arctic, it's covered entirely in forest (except in the far north where trees don't grow) and one could basically either ski or swim through that forest all year around. Finland is cold. Finland is wet. That's why Finland isn't on fire.

I'm not saying we're completely safe from climate change, but overall the threat of fires is much smaller here than in places like California or Portugal.

Trees and plants and insects depend on forest ground cover to live.If you raked the forest floor of it's ground cover you'd eliminate forest fires until the trees died from the floods laying their roots bare.No nation has EVER practiced forestry and fire prevention by raking ground cover.Do you have any idea what it would take to rake the millions of acres of forest in CA? My family is from Finland.....and NOBODY knows WTF Trump is Talking about!....First of all....Finland and California are Vastly different Ecosystems! Finland has a TON more Water in its Forests, lakes, rivers, and run off from snow in mountains etc. And most areas that are Forested are not densely populated like most of these California areas. So we have WAY Less instances of Forest Fires! Not to mention California is so over developed that has taken away alot of its natural water resources, but that is a minimal fact in relation to the increase in Temperatures over the last 20 years due to Climate Change! Combined with Incredibly strong, dry, unpredictable Wind Systems which can carry fire for miles in the air and start massive house fires from a lightning strike fire miles away.....It has very little to do with the "Forest Floor".... There are also massive valleys in between the forest areas that are simply miles of dry brush! So if a forest fire starts....you have miles of fuel for that fire.....That is a natural ecology....you can't 'Rake Up' miles of dry grasses that are an important part of the ecosystem, are too large to eliminate, and would totally destroy the natural growth! It's a major dry, arid climate. I have friends in the LA, Thousand Oak and Malibu areas that have tried to do things to their house like add metal roofing instead of wood, adding special glass and bars to their windows, trying to keep a water bumper around their property etc.....but these fires are the WORST in California History! If miles and miles of land are on fire and fire is being driven and fueled by the wind.....nothing will stand in its path, no amount of water or ditches can stop a Disaster of this magnitude.... People need to be more bloody careful with their campfires that's what started the one huge destructive blaze that claimed so many lives and destroyed the town of Paradise, but barring that....if there is a natural fire that occurs from a lightning storm and is near urban areas, there is not alot to do to stop it except get out of its path.....we don't have Fireproof Homes! These Fires are Massive and Devastating. Mother Nature will always win against Humans whether it's a massive fire, tsunami, earthquake etc. It's a horrible fact of Life. All my Love to the Families who lost Loved Ones and their Homes in this Massive Disaster and we all need to donate what we can to help these Families rebuild their Lives. 💞.

KirstiStephenson Actually, they haven’t finished investigating, yet. One possible ignition source I read about was sparks from a flat tire. Sparks from passing cars have started many of our fires. We had a simultaneous series of them in my neighborhood that were started that way, last year. This one called the Camp Fire, because it started near Camp Creek Road. The name has caused a lot of confusion. Thank you for the info about Finland😉 Our president is so embarrassing! I’m just glad our out- going & our in- coming governors didn’t react to his nonsense, because he would probably get offended & try to find a way to hold back federal aid. In Finland we have some of the biggest densities of lakes and islands as a country, which means plenty of waterline besides the forests. And the word "suo" in Suomi (Finland in Finnish) also happens to mean a marsh which does make sense with the previous facts. Forest fires do happen here like they did in the last hot summer, but not too often. We could extinguish our own and even lend our aid in extinguishing Sweden's. I would say that it's a bigger concern here that a tree falls under the weight of snow and cuts a power line.

But then, there are major differences between Weimar Republic Germany and nowadays America. Germany was devastated after WW1 was just partly recovering from staggering inflation, poverty and famine in the mid 20' and struck like lightning after the stock exchange collapse in 29'. This and it was at this point sepparated in different fractions - from left to right. I mean Bavaria was mostly something like a sovjet state back then with Munich as heartland of the NSDAP... Gouvernment was splitted into 7 or 8 parties if I remember correctly, while moste people living back then didn't have any experience with democracy, as the German Reich just fell 12 years ago. Most people were born and raised under an absolute Monarchy and were craving for one strong leader to help them out of the ditch. America however - grossly ignoring details has a very democratic and less authorative backstory. Nobody there likes to be gouverned (yes, exaggerating, but you get my point I hope). So I think a real fascist shift is not likely.

I think he is very conscious of the fact that his surname is German in origin, but Germany is a vastly educated country respected around the world and he is being laughed at by the nation his ancestors came from. All other countries make him feel insecure and inferior, but Germany's sophistication humiliates him. Also, Germany is run by a woman and she refuses to be intimidated.

Trump is a typical example of a deeply insecure man who is also racist and sexist and dumb. I do not believe that Germany in general is more educated than the US. There are lot of people here who would vote for someone who holds the same views as Trump. Our voting system is different and makes it more difficult to get to the top but that doesn't mean racism has no support here. And I am a bit worried what happens when Merkel resigns (and I'm not a fan of her or would ever vote for her party).

Yes, you have the same problem with the far right we all have, but most of your people have education to a reasonable level, whereas most Americans are not as educated as Brits or Germans. I am not a fan of Merkel either, as she is fighting against Brexit and we need Brexit, but she scares Trump and that makes me happy.

President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama were the epitome of class, intelligence, grace, and they were relatable - and Trump along with the GOP were brutally critical of them both and of course those critiques - Trump himself has not only done but to extremes. As a Finn I've been trying to wrap my head around this for days. We do NOT rake our forests! Raking is part of gardening and forests are not. We have around ten acres of forest per capita, raking all of it would be impossible. In stead the humidity and dense network of forest roads help us keep forest fires under control. You know what else is dense? Trump.

Like most people across the world we have always been aware of Trump since his inheritance brought him to public notice in the 70’s We have watched him as he became a larger than life character ...a big Democrat supporter and hanger-on to the Clintons later on ... His various bankruptcies and court cases ..: ...his ghost written books where he brags about the “art of the deal “ being the ability to blag when you are out of your depth.... And his most salient words of wisdom ..from that same book 📚 being: “you lie enough....and keep repeating...and some people will believe it” ..:but also I remember some fairly charming moments ...on chat shows like Letterman for example..a certain humour and almost self deprecating quality which he used in a series of adverts he used to try and mitigate the damage to him after the really big bankruptcy with the casinos 🎰 A well known con man is too simple a description, as there are some successes (becoming President of the 🇺🇸 is quite an achievement)...:even if it was down to timing...with social media being new to a population unable to yet work out fact from opinion and not yet used to the manipulative power of 2D imagery and content that they are exposed to over many hours of the day.... ....an unregulated/Wild West in Pandora’s smart box..containing their thinking and infecting those with susceptibilities.. We are not looking at Americans with anything other than hope that they can get through the twin infections that they are currently suffering .... it is not about Trump’s loose grip on reality, whether deliberate or not....it is not about American alone it is about social media and the internet ..and whether the human’s will find ways to control it fairly and effectively that it can become their tool.... ...or whether humanity will continue to use the internet as a tool to effectively infect and eventually enslave themselves

@tdot22 uhm no disrespect but youre a bit out of your league here with that comment. He wasn't taking Trump's side (as far as i know), just stating a fact. There's better terms than "raking the forest" for this process. It just has little to do with forest fires though, and as you correctly stated the climate is very different but most importantly the "forest floor" is very different. Trump didn't understand it at all so he just did what he always does - makes up a story of the things he's not paying attention to and reinvents those things suited for his own needs knowing his supporters will buy it anyways. He is just that transparent.

@tdot22 Sweden that is right next to Finland and shares the same climate had the largest forest fires of its history this year. An area of 20 000 hectares burnt there. The largest forest fire in Finland in the last decades was 250 hectares in 1997. There is an effort to collect twigs and other clutter to be burned in power plants and systems for monitoring the forests for fires so that they can be put off early. California has 8 times the people of Finland for a land area that is just a third larger. Even if there are dry conditions around the year, there's no excuse for large areas of forests to be burning every few years. Trump does have a point when criticizing the forest management in California. If they wanted to prevent the fires that cost lives and burn vast areas of land, it could be done one way or another.

jormapeikko the logic thing to do would have been to ask Finland to send over some experts to help in training/showing how to maintain the forests, in exchange on knowledge and friendship between the two countries, - and also accept that global warming is contributing to the increasing fires, and what to do to try and reduces them as much as possible for the people of California, But hey he’d rather believe you guys use rakes to clear the forest floor, so you can do this 🤦‍♂️
