"if you are..." Actually NO, that is entirely false. It's not a war according to Ukraine either. Ukraine is waging war based on their Special Antiterrorist Operation ongoing since 2014. The one which also states that noone siding with Donbass has any rights what so ever, including life.

NATO is not a defensive alliance. They illegally bombed Yugoslavia (direct violation of the UN Charter). We must never forget what they did to Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Syria etc.

Did the militias recieve formal training when they were incorporated into the russian army?

I think the militias have been formally trained since 2014, some of them are even among elite Russian formations now

@@ivanbadaev6621Correct. Also, remember that the core foundation of the militias were former AFU personnel stationed at AFU bases located in the Donbass at the time of the coup. Most joined the two militias together with their weaponry. The militia numbers were also boosted by former Russian and Ukrainian military personnel, both those coming from Russia as well as those who were living in the Donbass at the time. Of course, large numbers of non-military background civilians joined the militias, but they benefitted from training and leadership from very experienced commanders.

I didn't know the AFU had defections at the beginning of the war. That would explain how Russia was able to hold onto a lot of territory when they were retreating at the beginning of the war.

@@dragonknightleader1 Thanks to those experienced ex-AFU commanders the two militias were able to comprehensively defeat the first AFU army (estimated strength of 90,000) at Debaltseve around January 2015. This impending collapse caused Merkel to petition Putin to persuade the militias to ceasefire while the Minsk II Agreement was being negotiated.
