@John P I believe ad block kills conversions, which means the people without Adblock are probably getting destroyed with more ads to make up for KZbin's lost ad revenue. My question to you, is how do you expect KZbin to pay for the storage and management of 70k hours of new content that is generated per hour? I can guarantee you the business options are much worse than showing you an Ad. This feels like a case of two wrongs don't make a right, yeah these companies aren't innocent, but getting value from a service and then blocking their means of providing that service doesn't feel right either.

When a big tech company, that has a monopoly position employs algorithms or "AI" to solve highly complex problems, what you get is a company overruling laws. Doesn't matter what constitutes "fair use" or "educational use", that needs no permission, Google's ContentID *IS* the law now. And I fear that's gonna be the case for many other things in the future as well. You're allowed to do X, but if you do, company Z, who you are somehow dependent on, will hit you with sanctions that you can't afford so you refrain from it, despite having the right to it on paper.

@@toms_cigarzs Legally, using copyrighted content for educational use (which these "what makes this song great" certainly are) is exempt under fair use and these music labels have no right to plaster it with ads and claim the revenue. But you're completely right that no actual laws are being broken, it's the deal youtube made with the major labels when they got sued into oblivion by the likes of viacom. At this point, I just pihole all the ads into oblivion and directly support the content creators i like outside youtube, since most of their stuff gets demonetized anyways and it all goes to people who have no legal right to all the ad money, but take it anyways.

bami2 Lawyers also don’t yet know a way to fight it that doesn’t simply eat up one’s money. I’ve listened to creators who had the money, and they usually say that it just turns into a mess, because the big corporations don’t care about one at a time. I think creators would have to come together with a big class action suit to get repaid any losses and maybe even defamation, as it basically claims the channel is stealing when they aren’t. I wish all the musicians could find a way to make a new platform, but most who make a living off KZbin aren’t going to do that.

Let me give a history lesson on paying KZbin 12 dollars a month. Rick you're old enough to remember this. "Cable Television" used to be called, "Paid Television". In fact, the absence of ads were an explicit and primary selling point for Cable Television; that and to a lesser degree, a lack of censorship. In addition to the most commonly used form of television (basic rabbit ears and some aluminum foil from Radio Shack), there was also Satellite Television which at the time, every other house in the Deep South and Mid-West had a 15-20 foot dish along side their house; and everyone knew of switching their chips to get free reception; the industry made so much money on maintenance and selling hardware like the dishes and receivers, they were economically forced to accept the rampant and open piracy. None the less, at some point, Cable Television became the norm. Few people ever used the standard airwaves for television. And at that point, Cable Television became a target for advertisers. And who benefits? The Cable Companies of course, not only are they charging for the service, but they are being paid twice by the Advertisers; this is why I refuse to buy cable, and the fact Cable is infested with commercials. There were regulations on where commercials could be placed and time intervals as well. The regulations were so well established, programs, scripts and skits were engineered around these commercial blocks. Watch an old sitcom from the 1980s on KZbin, you'll often have black out spots, and the conversation and flow of the program doesn't feel as interrupted by the commercials that would be placed in these built in commercial break spots. With Cable Television, these regulations don't apply as they only applied to broadcast transmissions; the FTC has yet to catch up. This is why, you can witness four or even five commercials back to back on Cable Televisions; on channels that aren't part of basic packages. This is also why, you can get inundated with commercials, back to back, on KZbin as well. You can NOT script a dialog with any anticipated commercial block allocation. So every advertisement on Cable Television or KZbin, will feel as if it interrupts the flow of the content. Anyways... that's it. Complain to the FTC. And KZbin, when it has enough subscribers, just like the Cable Companies, will start airing ads when it's services are "normalized".

I can find a playlists of an artist, video game soundtrack, or even a podcast to listen to without having to have the phone screen open and lit up. Totally worth it to me. Also, you can share on Premium subscription with up to 5 or 6 friends/emails, so have your best friends all chip in together for even less of a dent in your wallet. Imagine, you'll never be annoyed by ads again! Even, a panoramic VR experience on the sidelines, or any seat in the house (both in your home and at the venue). That same tech can be applied to any gathering, like concerts and plays, too. Essentially, would pay-per-view-minus-ads be worth it to a viewer? That's sounds pretty good to me, if reasonably priced, of course. SO having to wait 5 or sometimes more than 15 seconds for an ad only to find out after 5 or 10 seconds that I don't want to watch the Video, only to click on another Video to gain having to watch an ad, sometimes the same over and over again... @Dumpy Goodness: You are 100% right; every word. Let me add a little thought: Left and Right are levels of income/wealth redistribution tastes. Call them "economic ideologies" but they are NOT "political" systems. According to Plato, the main 5 political systems are Aristocracy, Timocracy, Plutocracy, Democracy and Tyranny. Feudalism, the REAL political system right now under a thin disguise of Democracy, is a particularly corrupt type of Plutocracy. I was bringing this up because people get seduced in droves by this left/right "political" duality and debate it as if it were real, when in fact it has nothing to do with politics. Meanwhile most people don't know the difference between Timocracy and Plutocracy, or why Socrates classifies Democracy as the second-worst form of government. But I'm not contradicting your assertion that all leaders, managers and elites are inbred, incompetent and stupid. The only exception is Elon Musk. But as retarded as they are, the SYSTEM they've set up (the Rothschild's, mostly) is super clever and water-tight.

KZbin should let creators specify the timing of the ads. When you upload a video, it should tell you you will have 2 unskippable ads, two skippable ads, two banners, and then creators can mark the timings where they will appear on the video, therefore giving some control over interruption of the flow of the video. Obviously with some parameters so the creators can't bunch them all at the end for example. This will allow the creator to take pauses in the content where it knows the ad can sit and prepare in advance. Seems like a win win for both parties.

"I understand that they have to make money....". NO. Don't. Screw them. I remember the early noughties, when they reached the laziest point ever of marketing an act, and you were paying full retail price for an album just to have a two page booklet that consisted entirely in the song list printed in a bigger size type. That was back when they were "fighting hard" against the threat of online file sharing. Almost 20 years on and the label heads still get to spent these rough times in fancy accommodations while actual musicians of newer generations still struggle, and the best idea they've come up with is to butcher songs and content to place disrupting ads in the middle, with the same effect an electricity blackout during a rave party would have. I'm extremely reluctant about installing plugins and stuff, but I did add an ad-blocker 10 years ago, and have been having a great time listening to music on KZbin ever since, so much that I can hardly relate to what is being mentioned on this video.

Advertising has been shown to work, and work very well, for a good century and a half or so. Companies pay a ton of money for ads for a reason. The fact that I can watch youtube videos for free makes me okay with some advertising of some sort, but this is deliberately obnoxious and is aimed more at getting you to pay for KZbin Premium than it is at advertising per se.

My father and myself are music junkies and really enjoy your videos showing the break downs of songs. The constant ads in videos on this site is super annoying and causing some creators to leave you tube. When I was a lad, they had a great idea everyone liked: Cable TV. They promised us for a very low monthly fee, that we would never have to watch commercials again. We all know how that turned out; Trippe digit bills monthly AND tons of commercials. A couple years ago, I was watching Dr Phil, and they put up an emergency number at the bottom of the screen for people to call if they were at the end of their rope, which was promptly covered up by a pop up ON ANTENNA TV.

I've found (at least watching on my phone or casting to my TV) skipping all the way to the end of a video and selecting replay will bypass ads. Worst case, I may have to watch one ad, but it's worth it to skip the rest of them. Rick, you're 100% correct, though, not only are the ads annoying, but they do come up at the absolute worst times. I think that's because KZbin isn't made for commercial breaks, so there's no natural place to insert an ad. Thanks for another great video!

You're spot on here! 1. Yes, we're still suffering the hangover from the shift to MP3s and digital delivery of content. I think we'll be dealing with this for a long time to come. 2. I support artists (even the "conglomerates" :-/) and their need to earn a living. Given the almost ubiquitous nature of KZbin, there has to be a more elegant way of handling this. 3. My proposal to Alphabet/Google/KZbin is to create a set of meta tags that creators can use to specify a preferred position for and time code at which injects of ad overlays can occur and NOT destroy the viewer experience. To me, this is the most workable solution, but it's also the most problematic, as it requires collaboration with the creator community and it doesn't really seem like KZbin is any good at collaboration, as you and your fellow creators experience due to the its inaction on "Fair Use." Keep up the good fight, sir! 👍😉 /kengon

When there’s 2 full unskippable ads in the middle of the best parts of long epic songs it definitely takes the viewer out from the song. Just wanna say that even though the ads are outta your control - ,I love the "What makes this song Great" series so much, that any interruptions dont even disrupt with the "Even Flow" of the video itself. This channel has helped me so much during my nights in lockdown, and its been a joy seeing and hearing you dig into songs that made me who I am, and also uncover a new curiosity in songs that were not always on the radar with me. I sadly have no music theory, but love listening and trying to learn along from the emotions you convey by addressing what modes move the music along.

I have an ad blocker and hadn't seen ads for a very long time. Lately, every once in awhile, they have been popping up again. Maybe I have to look for another one. I love it when sites tell me to turn off my ad blocker. I immediately close out. Whatever they were offering they lost their chance to pitch whatever it was. I turned my TV off over a year ago. I was in a hotel last week and had nothing better to do so I turned it on. The ads were insulting to my intelligence. Do they really believe if they show me a pretty girl I am going to buy their car? I guess some guys do. The insurance ads starting with overprice Gieco are really annoying. It seems no one touts the quality of their products any more because there isn't any quality built in. It is all use once throw away.

I feel in addition to what Rick said. The extra ads we’re seeing was to push us in to a subscription. Something that happened to me just a couple days ago on my phone. The video I was watching went to an ad. The video was playing fine. Then the ad had to load and I got tired of waiting for it to buffer, & just stopped watching it all together. No Rick it wasn’t one of yours. So here’s the deal KZbin. You posses the ability to make your product greater than it already is while making more money. You also posses the ability to make it not worth watching. While we watch it tank. Then years later, talk about that thing “what was it called” that use to be. It's not just your channel Rick, they are doing this to every channel I watch & I agree its massively annoying. The worst part is their AI bot can't even pick an ad which I might be even remotely interested in or as usually is the case, they are just downright boring i.e. that ad where Baldwin bangs on about "how we missed on buying Google stock". Look, I understand they need ads to support the YT platform but considering they have accurate view counts (unlike those TV & radio surveys), this is getting a bit too much. As an example, I was watching a video from steveo1kinevo (Aviation channel) & it puts on an ad for tampons!. Thank god, yours & other creators YT content is actually worth watching and pushing through these ads. I've also seen it with your videos, exactly as you described it. Considering that funny ad compilations get millions of views, it seems our ad creators are still half asleep to what the market & consumers want & respond to. The thing that annoys me above all with these YT ads bombardment is that they then have the absolute hide to demonetise YT creators even if they play music for 10sec, or like with your channel which not just brilliantly explains music production & inspires musicians worldwide but is also a community service teaching young (and not so young!) folk about long forgotten, brilliant pieces of music whilst at the same time bang on about how they supposedly "care" about YT creators. If they or "music societies" ever watched FBE YT channel & see the videos about whether a generation knows music from an era, they will be incredibly shocked at how much most kids these days don't know. Well if YT actually cared about YT creators, why do they always demonetise your & other YT content creators videos?. Hypocrisy, much on YTs part I believe & if they keep on carrying on like this, I'm sorry Mr Baldwin but I'm glad I never ever bought Google stock if they will shoot themselves in the foot like this!. Keep up the awesome work, Rick. Love the channel!

The only solution I can think of which retains KZbin's desire to include advertisements everywhere is to give the content creator the freedom to place the ads where they want. So if KZbin says: "You must have 3 full-screen ads and 3 banner ads in this video" then the content creator simply chooses where to have those, perhaps with some restriction (you can't have them all stacked at the end, for example). But at least if the specific timing of them was at the creator's control, they could ensure nothing annoying like banners covering text or interrupting an important discussion occur.

Great analysis! At 2:00-ish ... Interesting to me that the annoying ad comes in "right at an important part of the video" as you say. My question based on the odd timing - is that ad placed automatically at the 2:00 minute point because YT knows that the first 1 minute of most videos are usually "introduction" content and a handy 'check-in / check-out' point? You probably know the answer, Rick, but it's worth thinking about for all of the other time points...maybe they are not so 'randomly' placed as it seems. The solution may be just to make the ads less intrusive, so it does not kill the creators' flow. Just for what its worth....
