Hi Mike, I would like your advice. I am 5"10 and 145 lbs. I've owned the Nest Latex hybrid (medium) for a year and a half. I love the supportive feel of the bed but it often it feels too hard for me (side sleeper mostly). When I first bought the bed plush was not an option, now it is. Because of the zipper it is easy to change out for a softer 3 inch latex insert. Nest now offers a Dunlop 19 ild for a softer feel. I heard Dunlop is more of firm feeling than Talalay. I'm torn between the two because I want soft yet supportive. I don't like the memory foam sink in feeling. What's your thoughts between Dunlop and Talalay for my situation? Thank you kindly

Hi Arno. Generally, we notice that Talalay tends to be made in a wider range of softness levels than Dunlop, but that doesn't mean that Dunlop is always more firm, and 19 ILD is a softer classification to be sure. The pocketed coil unit should still be plenty supportive even if you swap out the latex layer. I'd give Nest a call and talk to them -- their trial/return policy is solid, and while I'm not sure of their policy for supplemental latex layers, you may well be able to swap it out and give it a try. Based on what you've said here, there's a good chance that swapping out the latex layer will give you more of the softness you're looking for, and it should not compromise the support. @MelBelle55I have a Latex mattress from Dunlopillo. It sleeps cool and is responsive. I got a Medium-Soft firmness so I sink just enough. I personally prefer it with a layer of Memory foam to balance out the buoyancy.

Thank you so much, brilliant video, I have spent days researching this stuff. At last, a clear description of all things latex mattresses. I am in the UK and trying to get a reasonably priced latex topper. Sadly the information this wonderful video gives is hard to find, density/ILD per kilo yes but what latex and where manufactured no. I also wonder if these toppers will ever be recycled, especially in these difficult covid times. We'll never know.

Hi Cari. Ultimate ability to be recycled is a great question. Assuming you have a 100% natural latex product, it can be composted. If you can't compost yourself (cut into small pieces and add to a compost pile), check with local composting resources. Another idea for an old mattress topper is to check with your local animal shelter or PDSA. They can cut them into smaller pieces and use them as dog beds. Hope that helps!

Hi there -- Thanks for your comment, and your kind words. You can start using a latex mattress right away. Compressed latex should take on its final feel more quickly than most materials -- in many cases almost immediately, but in no case more than a week after opening. Like any mattress material, latex will get slightly softer over years of use, but in general this will happen much less and far more slowly with latex than with other materials. Of all the comfort materials (ie, the materials used in the top of the mattress to give it more softness, conformance, and pressure relief) used in mattresses today, latex has the most proven track record for longevity. I hope that's helpful.

Thanks for your kind words Troy -- very glad this was helpful! For a stomach sleeper, first off I wouldn't recommend all-latex construction, since you'll want something very firm in the support layer to make sure your mid-section doesn't sink too far into the mattress. Latex support cores aren't ideal for this -- a firm innerspring unit would be a better support option. Once you've nailed that part down, you will have more freedom with the ILD you choose for the latex comfort layer, depending on how thick it is. If it's thinner (eg 2-3"), then you could go with more or a medium ILD on the latex comfort layer, particularly if your support layer is relatively firm. However, if it's a thicker layer of latex (eg, 3-4"), or if your support unit has more give, then you'll want to be on the firmer side with the latex. So the bottom line is there is unfortunately no universal answer of an ILD that's best for a stomach sleeper -- what matters more is the overall firmness and support of the entire mattress relative to your weight. I hope that's helpful.

Hi Michael -- Thanks for your question, and your kind words. :) In general, we don't tend to recommend all-latex mattresses for heavier people. This is not for durability reasons but rather for support reasons. Heavier people need a support system that can hold firm under their weight. For a heavier person, a latex support core tends to "give" a bit too much. By contrast, a really firm spring support core is better to keep that heavier person's midsection from sinking too far into the mattress. That said, from a durability standpoint, latex is the most proven comfort material there is. And this durability can be especially important for heavier folks. So, many of the mattresses that we recommend for heavier people do feature latex in the upper layers of the mattress. This explains why latex hybrids are so prevalent on our list of good options for heavier people. In terms of adjustable base compatibility, you are right that an all-latex mattress would conform a bit better than a latex hybrid. However, the differential on this metric is marginal relative to the differential referenced above. And as for damage, there are plenty of hybrid mattresses that are fully designed to bend and flex for use on an adjustable base. IMO a latex hybrid mattress that is designed with this capability would be no more susceptible to damage on an adjustable base than would an equivalent all-latex mattress. I never thought finding a mattress we like could be so hard! I am female around 140lbs and primarily a stomach sleeper my husband is around 200lbs and primarily a back sleeper. We have tried several mattresses and have returned them all because of them being hot and making our backs hurt. We are currently trying the purple .3 and are not loving it either I can not get past being able to feel the grid in the bed but also I am waking up with very bad back pain durning the night with this bed as well. We are now looking into latex but I want to make sure we will sleep cool on a latex bed and wonder which ones you suggest for our sleeping positions and for sleeping cool? I am so done trying to find a comfortable mattress I absolutely dread going to bed at night because I know how uncomfortable I am going to be! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated you seem very knowledgeable on this subject and I enjoy your videos.

GoodBed This quiz actually matched us to the purple .3 and that is what we are trying now like I said previously and we do not like it! I just can’t get over the fact I can feel the grid pushing into my stomach I wake up all night long with my back hurting. I do love the coolness of the bed which is something that is very important to me. Ok my question is if we decide to go latex which is what I have been researching heavily the last few days which of these do you recommend Zenhaven, plush beds, spindle or maybe something else you can think of because there are a to out there! Also the type of latex we should go with is also very confusing there are Dunlop, talalay not sure which one is best for us and if one is cooler than the other. I am really tired of having to return mattresses I just want to find one we love and get a good night of sleep with no back pain! Sorry this is so long winded but I am very frustrated with this entire process! I guess I should ask this also is a bed with coils and latex a better option for staying cool and also I want a mattress that is at least 12 inches thick or more. This was really great information! Love learning as much as I can so when I'm ready to buy I'll be informed. I do have a question though. With all these latex & foam mattresses nowadays, what is the best way to dispose of them? Is the natural latex biodegradable? Any of them? Do any of the mattress companies recycle these mattresses? More than one question LOL!!!

Hi Laurie. That is a great question. All-natural latex is biodegradable and compostable, at least theoretically. I would check with your municipal recycling officials to find out whether and where they will accept it. And a lot of other types of mattresses are recyclable (again theoretically). The foam can be shredded and re-used as stuffing, or for padding for shipping. Steel springs can be recycled. Cotton covers might also be recycled. Wood frames are compostable or can be turned into mulch. Right now, we are not aware of mattress brands that will take back their own mattresses and recycle them. Some, for a fee, will take away your old bedding when you buy a new mattress, but few promise recycling. We think this is definitely an area that's going to develop quickly. We had an all latex mattress and it was a HUGE mistake! It is extreeeeemely heavy and veeeery difficult to move from room to room and house to house! If there were some way to enclose it in a frame with handles, then we might consider getting one in the future.

Yes, latex is very heavy indeed - an all-latex mattress can also be floppy. We always note when manufacturers include functional HANDLES on mattresses so they can more easily be moved, and many brands do include them.

Hi, this was so helpful. I went to a high end bed store, and they had a 7 inch latex mattress. I'm 5'4 and 135 lbs, amd i need lower back support and neck support. Will the 7 inch mattress be alright. It's all natural latex with wool. Thanks.

A 7 inch mattress is quite thin, but given your small size, you might be OK, particularly if you sleep predominantly on your back or stomach. Side sleeping requires more conformance, which a thinner mattress is less able to to provide, but again given your light weight you might be OK, particularly if you are less curvy than average. Thanks for your response, but I am currently at Custom Comfort Mattress and they don't allow for the improvisation. I am pretty lost here, the bed I am currently laying atop as some polyurethane in the bedding a little softer, they said it is medium firmness kind of hard to move around on you kind of have to pick yourself up to move. Any help would be much appreciated as I am on a very short timeline.

I am curious as to how thick they pour dunlop when they "bake it". I get the softer is on top and denser is on bottom. Seems to me that if they simply "slice off" the lighter stuff off the top, then dunlop appears to be a pretty good choice given that one can buy 3 inch layers of dunlop at various thickness levels.

Hi there -- Thanks for your question. In general, jumping on mattresses is not necessarily the ideal way to maximize their lifespan, since the severity of that kind of movement can affect the mattress in ways that can be difficult to predict. For example, foams that have no problem being compressed in one direction can tear when they are stretched or pulled in another direction, or when some sort of shear force is applied to them. Likewise, pocketed coils can separate and become dislodged within their configuration inside the mattress. Etc. All that said, and with that general disclaimer being made, latex is certainly one of the most durable mattress materials out there, so if having kids jump on the bed is a requirement no matter what, IMHO latex is likely to stand up to this kind of abuse better than most mattress materials. Hi Victor. We haven't taken a look at that particular brand, but their materials info on their site seems promising. When it comes to managing heat, we believe that the type of bed is the first consideration, and one reason we like hybrid + latex mattresses. The support unit of springs allows for lots of airflow, while the latex comfort layer provides the pressure relief you want. We did not think the original Purple, which has a foam support core, would be a great choice for those with an issue of 'sleeping hot'. We thought that the Purple Hybrid would be a better choice in that respect. The same goes for latex -- if sleeping hot is a major concern, look for a hybrid latex mattress, with springs on the bottom and latex on top. Like other types of materials, not all latex feels the same in terms of softness. Some manufacturers tinker with the density and/or perforations to make a piece of latex softer or firmer, so it really varies from model to model. Hope that's helpful!

The best thing about latex mattress is, you won't feel the movement of your the person sleeping beside you. If your partner is the type who move vigorously while sleeping, it might dIsturb your sleep if it is a spring coil mattress because it can bounce easily. Latex mattress in very stable. It's really alifetime investment for a good night sleep.

Hi. Yes, latex typically does have good motion isolation, but it can vary by mattress model. Keep in mind that most innerspring and hybrid mattresses today use pocketed coils, so they have much better motion isolation that older spring-type mattresses.

What about memory foam over latex? I laid on on of the icon fort beds that had that and feel in love but refuse to ever spend money on those commercial brands that don't last. I am thinking about a tempurpedic topper that I can replace if it wears out over talalay latex.

Hi Michelle. Interesting. We have not tried that combination of materials, and it's certainly unusual. Your suggestion of using a memory foam topper (which would be easy to replace down the road) on top of a latex mattress would certainly work. It would also be very HEAVY so keep that in mind too.

Hi there -- Thanks for your question. If you're having hip pain it sounds like you're a side sleeper and your mattress isn't giving you adequate pressure relief. If you're also having back pain, that means you aren't getting proper spinal alignment. At your weight, I think an all-latex mattress (rather than a latex hybrid) that is on the softer side might work quite well for both of these. I will check the link. Thanks so much. I am also grateful and really pleasantly surprised that you actually reply to people who watch your reviews. I will try to order it and hope and pray that this helps me because I literally cry with pain and I really can’t believe the lies that people tell at the stores in order to sell a mattress. The guy later said that they put the mattresses through a machine to make them soft so when you try them they are soft. (This of course was after I had slept on the mattress for 3 weeks) I was dumbfounded thinking how could it be after 3 weeks I couldn’t sleep and I had excruciating pain in my hips. I’m on the couch as I typed and I can just think of the seller leaving the store in a Mercedes of the year taking advantage of people I went begging that he would take the mattress back. Hi Larry. It really depends on the foams - how dense they are, etc. "Support" is the ability to hold your spine in proper alignment, and theoretically, if you have the same pocketed coil unit under two inches of latex versus two inches of memory foam, the support should be very similar between the two. Rather, it would come down to what kind of "feel" you like -- how much softness/give you prefer, and whether you enjoy that melting sensation that memory foam can give you. Hope that helps!

Hi. This video is about latex as a material rather than a specific mattress. Latex mattress come in a wide variety of heights, but if you are talking about a mattress that's entirely made of layers of latex, 8" to 12" tends to be most common. We also look at a lot of latex hybrid mattresses, where you have latex on top of a pocketed coil unit. Among that type, you'll find anywhere from 9" or 10" up to 14" or so. It really just depends on the brand. I hope that's helpful.

I don’t think I’d like it since I don’t like memory foam. I’m getting rid of my 13 year old bed next week and replacing it with a cotton and wool 3 inch shikibuton. I had thought about latex but decided against because the comparison to memory foam. Chatgpt said heavier people like the average American find latex more supportive and comfortable. I like firm and sleep best on the floor/camping etc. Thanks for the video.

Hi there, in general I'd say that latex is 'contrasted' with memory foam more than it is 'compared' to it. But in any case, based on what you said (especially the part about sleeping best on a camping mat), I'd agree that you are better off on something extra firm with little to no give. A shikibuton seems like a pretty solid proxy for a camping mat. Separately, an unsolicited PSA: Be very careful getting mattress advice from ChatGPT or the like. The vast majority of mattress info on the internet is not factual or accurate -- it's marketing, fake reviews, Reddit threads of the blind leading the blind, etc. This is the stuff that any AI model would be trained on, so it's definitely a case of "garbage in, garbage out." I'm 225 Lbs - what ILD or how many inches of foam do I need? I'm thinking of getting blended latex with a dunlop base and talalay top but also do I get three, 3'' layers for a NINE inch mattress or two layers? Should I get wool? ( I don't care about fire retardation) - I do want a soft comfy cotton cover tho --------I'm 54 years old and my old mattress caused be great pain upon waking so I need pressure point relief and a med - soft one , so I think -----------------It's really only about a pain free comfortable nights sleep - Anyone?

Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Like other methods of making latex, the Talalay method can be applied to any formulation, from all-natural to natural blend to synthetic. So if natural is what you're after, you can certainly get that in Talalay latex. That said, latex purists will sometimes point out that the Talalay process does require the use of a small amount of chemical additives (which are not required in the other methods of making latex foam). My understanding is that these additives are well less than 1% of the formulation, so all-natural Talalay latex would still be over 99% natural. But if that distinction is important to you, then Dunlop or continuous pour latex would be a better option for you. I hope that's helpful.

Hi Mike, I am 5'8" 250 lbs, hoping to get back to 150-175 lbs. I am looking into a 100 percent natural latex firm bed. It has a 6 inch latex core of 30 ILD, with 3/4 inch of latex on both sides of 18 ILD, with some wool and an organic cotton casing, plus an addition 1 inch of 18 ILD latex on both sides. It seems to firm, don't know how much it will soften and when I get back to 150-175 pounds I don't know if it will be versatile or too hard. All of my weight is in my midsection--any guidance you can give me will be much appreciated or should I settle for an 8 inch pocketed coil system with 15.5 gauge could 968 to be exact on a queen with some wool and about one inch of 18 ILD comfort layers on both sides? Hi Ben. Thanks for your question. The short answer is that if it feels too firm for you now, it will almost certainly feel too firm to you when you lose the weight. If you're interested in all-latex mattresses, a couple suggestions for other videos you might want to check out: If you're committed to all-latex, check out the Spindle review. I keep looking at the all latex ZenHaven but I can’t help but think I’d be better off with a spring or spring hybrid or even a Purple 4. I just don’t know how pure latex with no springs will feel for me much less the strangeness that is the Purple. Seems you can get a better overall support plus nicer top layer comfort from a spring hybrid. From everything I read I don’t want a memory foam bed but somehow memory foam makes much more sense as a top comfort layer in a spring hybrid. Like I know what a spring feels like so that’s the safe option. And nobody is talking about Sleep Number or Tempurepedic anymore as they are too expensive for their own good. I am 300 lbs now and I have to loose 100 lbs soon for sheer health reasons. I’ve discounted the DreamCloud for various reasons. The search goes on...

Hello Stephen. If you're looking for a bed that has a more traditional feel but also uses some modern materials -- and it sounds like you are -- then there are a lot of pocketed-coil hybrid mattresses to choose from. You don't mention what type of sleeper you tend to be (eg back, side, etc) but generally, we do think hybrid mattresses can be a supportive choice for people in your weight range. And using pocketed coils allows manufacturers to use different spring gauges in different parts of the bed, something that's not typically done with foam, and certainly not latex. Something like the WinkBed Plus comes to mind -- that bed combines a pocketed coil unit with latex on top. GoodBed funny, my own research has narrowed my search down to two WinkBeds, the original WinkBed and the WinkBeds EcoCloud. Still torn on those. I like back sleeping but I do go all over (back, stomach, side) especially if I am having trouble breathing with sleep apnea or I am reading in bed on my iPhone or iPad.

I too was doubtful latex could REALLY support (or last) as well as a spring base. We switched 16 years ago. My experience has been great. Michael goes into detail about the progressive density property of Dunlop. It's very resilient (like springs) which makes it excellent in support layers. For longevity, natural (not synthetic) latex will outlast all foams. Sadly, it can be a bit confusing to learn which combinations of density work best for your personal preference, body size, sleep position. It doesn't help that there's so much marketing jargon out there! IMHO, keep it simple. You can find natural latex mattresses with 2-4 layers, inside an unzippable cover. Customize your own bed. And, at any time you can change layers around or replace comfort layers in 5-7 years (instead of buying a new bed!) Ideally you should experience some 100% latex mattresses in person but they can be hard to find. Some retail brands to search for would be SavvyRest, OMI. Barring that. I've heard good things about Spindle, SleepEZ, & Arizona Premium Mattress. CozyPure. Quality natural materials at reasonable prices. Wishing you luck!!

I have been doing some research trying to figure out which mattress would be the best. You said sir that memory phone is the best pressure relief material and it also regulates your temperature. I'd have to say you're absolutely wrong. On the temperature side memory foam is not breathable in any way shape or form it not only traps in heat but it increases heat so I think that. Memory phone is one of the least best materials out there also when you include that ed. Concaves or does not keep its shape long after you buy it usually within a year. You have indentations so how can that give pressure relief points if you're sleeping in a pit and can't roll 76% of sleepers? Toss in the night or are active sleepers so I think memory. Foam is probably one of the worst materials out there. It just has a lot of hype from advertisers and many companies using it but it doesn't mean it's a good product. It's a horrible product.

Hi Greg -- Thanks for your comment. First, I do assume that you realize that this video is about latex (not memory foam). More importantly though, I think you might be twisting (or inventing) my words about memory foam "regulating your temperature." I completely agree that temperature regulation is a relative weak point of memory foam in general, though I would also concede that some memory foams can be better at this than others. Regarding pressure relief, this is simple physics. As a very broad generalization, the more points of contact that your body has with the mattress, the better the pressure relief. This is because your body's weight is effectively distributed across more points of contact, meaning that each point of contact has less weight on it, and therefore incurs less pressure. This remains true even at a very granular level, so the more closely and precisely that a mattress conforms to your body, the more the pressure in that particular spot on your body will be diffused. Memory foam is no doubt one of the most highly conforming materials, and this is a big part of its pressure-relieving capabilities. Of course, this same precise conformance is one of the factors that makes it harder for heat to escape, but as I said above, we are in agreement on that. Nonetheless, since you seem to understand the way it traps heat, hopefully this explanation will make it easier to understand why those same characteristics gives it an advantage in relieving pressure. Sorry we missed this previously. The word "organic" is regulated by the FTC, so in order for a manufacturer to make that claim -- whether for a raw material or a finished product -- it needs to be certified by a recognized standards body. Typically this set of standards will also consider factors beyond just being "natural," such as being environmentally friendly, avoiding the use of pesticides, minimizing carbon footprint, having fair labor practices, etc.
