I have slept on a hybrid for the last 5 years. I don’t favour either topology. However, I don’t think you explored memory foam sufficiently. Memory foam is available in varying densities, from extremely light to extremely heavy. The density of your memory foam mattress will have a huge influence on if’s performance. You also neglected to mention ‘roll together’. You are less likely to disturb your partner when you move, or get up to go to the bathroom, especially if your memory foam mattress is manufactured from a high density foam. As regards latex winning the ‘bounce test’, I’ve not bounced on my bed since I was a child. The only ‘bouncing I participate in these days, is in harmony with my wife. The material beneath us is of little significance as long as it’s more comfortable than the back seat of my car!

Hi Anas, Comfort is a very tricky thing to judge because it is very subjective. What may be comfortable to you may not be comfortable for the next person, everyone judges comfort a little differently. My best recommendation is to go to your local store and try each type for yourself to get an idea of the comfort.

Thank you for this comment! I'm here coz I'm trying to decide if I should get a memory foam pillow (with really good reviews on Amazon that I've been considering buying for about 2 years) or a latex one. I ended up buying an organic millet peel pillow which never worked out for me and some weeks ago a CertiPur certified butterfly (extremely firm) memory foam and that was the first time I started waking up with tension headaches from the neck. Not only my regular neck pain. The reason I haven't bought that memory foam that I've wanted for so long is because it's not CertiPur certified (chemical/toxin free) and I don't want the pillow off-gas anything. Although I've also read that the off-gasing is only for the first weeks... But at the same time I want peace of mind and still help my painful neck the best way. But as it seems right now, especially after reading this thread, I might just go with the memory foam one.

Does a latex mattress require a box spring underneath it? If so, what do you recommend..
@sdmattressmakers6 жыл бұрын
Hi J 203, What a latex mattress needs is a firm support underneath it. Whether that is a box spring, platform bed, or even the floor. It needs something underneath to properly support the mattress so there is no compromise on the support. We recommend a solid wood foundation or if you have a platform bed with slats the slats shouldn't be more 2.5" apart from each other. Hope this helps you on your journey!

What is the density and IDL of that latex piece? I wanna make a bed/storage box project and I want to buy some natural latex foam like that (thinking 3 inches). I chose 3 inches because I slept before on a Thermarest Luxurymap (3inches) for months and it was great. I'm not sure how the specs of Thermarest compare with the available latex foams. Can you give me some advice pls? The foam will be coated in 50x100cm pillows and screwed at the bottom on a plywood surface (put inside with the help if zippers and whatnot) - basically screwed on lids that open to access the storage.
@sdmattressmakers6 жыл бұрын
I believe we used a medium talalay latex layer which would be between 24-27ILD. If you're going to use latex as a layer to sit on rather than sleep on you'd want to go a little firmer than the 24ILD we used for a couple reasons. 1. When you sit on something all your weight is concentrated in the small surface area compared to when you lie down so needs to be firmer. and 2. using only 3" for a cushion that would be sat on most of the time it will bottom out if it's too soft. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
@cubul326 жыл бұрын
@@sdmattressmakers I can certainly make cushions for sitting, but for most of the space I'd have 24" height above, so most of my time I'd be laying on my back resting against a bean bag or something to lift my back if I wanna chill. Only at the back there's an era where I could sit to relax with the trunk open (it's a Prius conversion). I would get 30 or 44 ILD Dunlops in 3" to begin with. Do you think 44 would be too firm? I like firm beds, I sleep on my side with a hint of belly and I usually like firm surfaces but have no idea how firm is 44 dunlop.
@sdmattressmakers6 жыл бұрын
@@cubul32 I would stick with a 36-40ILD in the dunlop if it's 3" and you're going to spend sometime laying on it. That should be firm enough to support you but not too firm for when you want to lay on it.
@cubul326 жыл бұрын
@@sdmattressmakers It's either24, 30 or 44 from this company in Canada. I'm kinda afraid to go just with 3 inches. I read that most people bottom out at 4 inches when they try hard, by sitting on their toes. I am contemplating 1+3 inch, 2+2 inch or 3+1 inch of 44 on the bottom and 30 on top. What does it feel like sitting on just 44 at 165 lbs (5'10). I have no experience with this, I have no idea where I could try. I feel scared to make a choice. So you're saying that 3" of medium would sleep me just fine? What would sleeping on a 3 inch 44 feel like when sleeping, would I wake up with a soar, limp arm? 165 lbs 5'10, side sleeper mostly. I did see a 2 inch layer of probably medium (said the seller) in this mattress shop. But it was a tiny 8 inch by 4 inch piece. It felt rather soft. That's why I had that wild thought of buying just 3 inches of 44.

You can't compair memory foam with latex with those tests, simply because the don't have the same measure, density... this test don't prove nothing. And this weight compared with the size of the two foams... it's like a 2ton person in a real bed.
@williamj34596 жыл бұрын
Why was the edge test done with a thicker piece of latex, while the air flow test was done with a thinner piece of latex? You guys seem to be full of it. That's unfortunate, because I'd made my choice to buy latex based on real information rather than tricks. You could make a better argument without the deception.
@sdmattressmakers6 жыл бұрын
Hi William, On the edge test there is about a half inch difference because it was what we had available but even if they were same thickness they would perform the same. The air flow test they were actually the same thickness so no deception there. We actually sell both memory foam beds as well as latex beds but these tests were based off some of the frequently asked questions from our customers. Everyone is different and there's no one size fits all mattress. So some people may like memory foam some latex. We're just trying to bring helpful information so customers can make the best choice for them.
@JTree6 жыл бұрын
This is the dumbest comment I have ever seen. Even if the thickness was the same it is soooo clear to see that the memory foam flattens to paper thin and the latex was more resiliant and didnt even come close to getting that flat at all. Also in the airflow test you can see that the latex has a clear airflow no matter the thickness. The memory foam didnt even move. Dont be so sceptical the tests they did were solid and as accurate as possible.

I liked this video. Is there a set definition for a viscoelastic mattress (which was the search that brought me to this video) ? And what about synthetic latex? Is it comparable, i.e. does it stand up to real latex. Memory foam seems really stupid for pretty much anything, but I can see that it would be really comfortable for a short while.
@sdmattressmakers4 жыл бұрын
Viscoelastic is the technical term of what the mattress is doing. Viscoelasticity is how a memory foam mattress responds to weight. As far as the synthetic latex being comparable to natural latex, it depends on what you mean being comparable. Both are very durable they do have a slightly different feel from each other. Synthetic seems to be more bouncy than natural. If you're looking for a durable latex mattress and not too concern with the natural aspect of dunlop or talalay then a synthetic latex may be fine for you.
