If you lathe is like my 17" Colchester, the input shaft runs on splash lube bushings, NOT ball bearings. A major cheap out. Pull the top cover and pry on the input shaft, to see if your bushings are spanked. ----Doozer

We do have an odd noise coming from the head that needs investigation so it will be interesting to see if it has bearings or bushings on the input shaft. Take care

Thanks for the shout out Joseph! Try running the lathe with the chuck speed set low, if the noise stays at high speed, it is a bearing on the input shaft, which always goes at the same speed , if the noise slows down, but not to chuck speed, it is the intermediate shaft. Time to take the lid off and have a look. If you take the belts off and loop a piece of electrical cable round each shaft in turn, at either end of the shaft, next to the bearings, and see if you can lift the shaft whilst looking for any play in the bearings. Also look for up and dowm play on the input shaft where the pulley fits, if the lathe has run short of oil at some time, the bearings higher up in the gearbox may have got damaged. Good luck! Phil

No problem, I hope the shout out gets you more views and subscribers. Thank you very much for the detailed reponse, we will try all the things you suggested. Does the input and intermediate shaft use standard bearings or is something special/expensive? Take care

I remember you working on this brake some months back??? It seems to work fine without it though and it will just take some getting used to. I'd bet you and the cameraman will still be pushing on the brake lever until you "break" the habit. I've been watching your subscribers grow and you are almost to 1000 ! I see you have a pair of welding gloves near the wood burning stove in the parlor--they make the safest and most comfortable gloves for poking in the stove. Nice to see you !
@GardenTractorBoy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it is great to see the channel grow but I think it will be a while before we hit 1000. We could not really notice a difference with the brake removed either. It is possible that it would make a difference if we had a large chuck installed and we were working on something heavy. We started using welding gloves on the stove a few years ago and you are right, they work very well. Take care

Thanks for anther great project, great stickers I will have to check out the channel From Alberto . Great work on the lathe sounds like a bearing is failing on the rear end from my headphones. Try lubing the bearing,if the noise of the bearing gets lower it needs replaced. If it’s a sealed bearing sounds like it needs replaced.

I'm sure you can hear it clearly since you're directly in front of the lathe but I'm not experienced with lathes to provide you any assistance. @@GardenTractorBoy I made new bronze bearings (bushings)on the shafts.(sorry for my English).also check the gear teeth.maybe the noise is from feeding gears. The conversion I did to the brake,was to cut the "pad" in the midle,and put springs to hold them in place.just like a moto brake...now its very easy to stop imidiately the chuck.

Hello Joseph, It was interesting to see that the brake did not make much difference to the stopping of the spindle... I was thinking that if the headstock bearing are not in good condition maybe the friction is acting as a brake when the power is removed. If you do change the bearing it would be interesting to conduct the same test with and without the brake and see if difference. See you next time... Take care. Paul,,
@GardenTractorBoy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. It is interesting that the brake made no difference but I guess it could if a large chuck was installed and we were working on a heavy bit of stock. It is an interesting thought about bearing friction acting as a brake, clearly more investigation is required and it would be worth start/stopping it with the belts removed in case it is a bearing in the motor acting as a brake. Take care

Lathe repair is some uncharted territory for me... one thing I can attest to is using a screwdriver to hear transmitted noise. For example: Placing the tip of a screwdriver on a bearing mount or close to the suspected noise source while placing your head in contact with the handle will transmit any sounds quite well. Keep moving around 'listening' in and when the noises get louder you are getting closer. Best success to you 👍
@GardenTractorBoy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. We are only just starting to learn how to get the best from using the lathe so repairing it is new to us too. I like yout screwdriver idea, we will try that. Thanks for the suggestion, take care

my old Atlas lathe is very noisy if I have the lead screw in operation but with out it , not a lot of noise, in my case it's all those gears moving.

We had assumed the noise we were hearing was the gears and the brake. It seems like it was not the brake so further investigation is required. We are not in a hurry to get to the bottom of the noise as the lathe works well. Tak care

Who needs brakes anyway? 😂 I agree that stopped quite well without the brake (much better than my truck). Maybe the lathe needs to be “drop kicked” by the UK postal service to straighten it out 😜
