LATHE CHUCKS 101 PART 1, three jaw chucks, four jaw chucks, 5C collets. How to use and when to use

First part of a series of videos that describe lathe work holding devices more specifically this video looks at the advantages and disadvantages of three jaw chucks, four jaw chucks and 5C collets. As for all Thatlazymachinist videos, this video is aimed at the novice machinist who wishes to develop proper basic work skills. In this video we look at different work holding accessories used on lathes and what would motivate us to choose one over the other. Was a machinist for 40 years, almost 70 now, very good explanation of chucks. Always used 4 Jaw chucks, and first thing I did on my home lathe was remove the 3 Jaw chuck and install a 4 Jaw chuck.

Hey. I think you shouldn't be afraid to go over the 30 min limit. I actually thought this tutorial was quite essential. Very good info about the inner workings of a 3 J Chuck. I mean I've been using them for a long time and I had to find out things the hard way. I wish I had seen a video like this years ago.

Marc, I have a six jaw Buck chuck and the owners manual recommend to use the master key (which is marked) for maximum accuracy. I could not figure out why, please explain why are they doing that? Thank you for your dedication and care for all you do and share. Your videos are very educating, entertaining and pleasant to watch.

Never seen a chuck with one key hole before ! One thing i feel you should have touched on is why you never put a piece of pipe over the end of the tee handle of a chuck key to get it tighter - it can kill a chuck real easy . I hope you will touch on how to fix a 3 jaw chuck that has excessive runout ( grinding the jaws ) and i would like to hear your thoughts on chuck lubrication as this is a real can of worms for some . Excellent video Marc !

Marc L'Ecuyer Hi Marc , you don't talk too much and i will never understand why anyone would complain about longer videos - longer means more for free ! You are still the number one for educational videos on machining and workshop practice , i always try to point newcomers to machining towards your channel because i know they will learn a lot from you ! The funny thing is the same people that whine about long videos probably whine about short ones as well ! You simply can't please them !

Is there any PB jaws in existence? They fit on a chuck that has 630mm OD

Very small 3 jaw chucks, do in fact often have reversable chuck jaws. Both sides of the teeth are convex and in some cases are really just round pins.

I have a small 45mm 3 jaw chuck which is reversible, except when reversing instead of putting jaw 1 in chuck slot 1, I have to put jaw 3 in chuck slot 1, jaw 2 in chuck slot 2 and jaw 1 in slot 3 so that it centers properly.

The 3-jaw chucks I have also have only 1 key hole. But every drill chuck I can recall seeing has three key spots, and if you need to chuck tightly, you have to tighten all three. I know they are constructed differently, but maybe that is why people ask about only tightening one on a 3-jaw.

No, you do not need to tighten all three. The chuck key drives a single ring gear which you can plainly see on the outside of the chuck, just like the 3-jaw self-centering lathe chuck has a single crown gear / scroll driven by three pinion gears.

The scroll has some clearance in the chuck body and binds against the chuck body as well as rotating when tightened. Using the other key positions relieves the binding, alowing the scroll to be rotated a little more with less friction.

Sorry about that, I have always said it backwards. I checked some old videos and discovered that I have been saying it backwards since forever in both English and French.
