A lot of negative comments. He is on a top notch channel, giving a tutorial for a reason. They are good tips to get started and to have in your arsenal of drumming. Of course their are more advanced drummers and ones that has this so called "feeling" some people seem to have. So be proactive and go listen to THEM, instead of bitching about it. My Chinese food the other night wasn't really from China. Happy drumming.

I'm glad I watched this video because ironic enough I've been forced to learn Oye Como Va, and we're only a 3 piece band (drum, bass, guitar) so I'm having to play the part of the drums, timbales, cowbells, and congas, AND sing. This video gave me a better understanding of this genre because I'm mainly a rock drummer. You guys make some awesome videos thanks!

With all respect friends " Drumeo " This is not Latin music. Most patterns are misled . Latin music is not only technique drumsticks. It is to know the tradition they come from the rhythmic expressions and especially the simplicity and natural feel . A humble opinion of student Colombian percussion . Thank You.

Playing the Cascara(RH) with the 3:2 Clave(LH) can eassily be played with the opposite hands when you are aware of the rudiments involved and the overall sticking being performed. I too have been playing this same pattern for many many decades only with the Cascara played by the RHand. However, It became instantly playable with the LH lead on the Cascara simply because I learned the essential "sticking" and actual rudiments that comprise the pattern. I have also been teaching this pattern for decades and have transcribed it for my students so it is locked into my mind as per it's sticking.sequence.

THE second beat of the 3 part of the clave is on the 2and , and is called the 'Bombo' note . In Afro Cuban Music there is Rumba Clave and Son Clave . They can Both be 3/2 or 2/3 .depending on the arragements or where you start in the tune . it works over 2 bars of four beats.

I really dont understand all of the negative comments. First and for most Mike Micchalkow is a great drum instructor.Is his Latin rhythms perfect ? Probable not." He's not Latino" Latin music is not only very beautiful,but very complex as well. If you are of Latin origin you all ready know this. The music is your heritage your heart and soul, it lives in you. But for us white north American guys we have to learn to feel it and hear it the same as you and I am not sure we can because its not part of our culture and history.But this doesn't mean we cant try. America is a melting pot of people and culture who have all brought their music with them and this music has all gone into the pot of gumbo and come out to be what ever we want it to be as musicians. no matter how imperfect or non-traditional it is good That is the true beauty of music and why I play the drums. I play New Orleans style music, most of my rhythms are based on the Clave,but you wouldn't recognize my music as Afro/Cuban " its not" its only based on the skeleton of the Clave,once again the melting pot effect the "Gumbo". If you want note for note purity then find a Latin teacher who teaches this. Dont look at a white man from North America and expect to hear a authentic traditional representation of a samba, meringue, soca rhythm. It's not likley to happen No More than you could probably play a second line beat and make me feel it.

you guys are great teachers :) professional and fun, pretty hard to get the balance right but I think you managed that
@luiszuluaga65752 жыл бұрын
You make an off the cuff remark about playing the cha-cha and that you ALMOST learned to dance in that hour. The irony of that statement is that I believe the best drummers inherently are dancing through their rhythmic applications. This was a great stripped down lesson demonstrating an otherwise very though to learn style.

I am Latino. I was born in Puerto Rico. I also hold a Bachelors degree in percussion. Based in knowledge and experience I can surely say that this isn't the way we play our music. There are some elements of the lesson that are useful and can be implemented in some circumstances. But our music depends also on knowing our culture, history and the expressions inherent to the style. I usually don't have many objections with Drumeo but in this particular case have a Latino Drummer/Percussionist re-do this lesson please.
@ShartimusPrime8 жыл бұрын
I am half Nicaraguense and half white (born in San Francisco) with a Cuban grandfather, and have been playing drums almost 20 years. After seeing numerous salsa bands play live here in San Francisco, I have to agree with what Juan is saying. A lot of the drummers don't even have more than a kick, snare, hats, and crash. Drum set playing in true salsa band situations is usually minimal because there's so much going on with the timbales and congas and other percussion. Saying that, I think this stuff would work for an American style aka hella white-washed version of this music, ie Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

@juanroldan43798 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you guys agree with me. I would like to reiterate that my comment isn't racial but cultural. Also it isn't a personal attack to Drumeo. Just like our friend here Shartimus stated, this would be a white american re-interpretation of our cultural rhythms. Anyway, I started my own KZbin channel were I teach drums and percussion. If you guys would like to take a look, my videos are there. I try to teach from the very beginning as if I was teaching new students. So no flashy solos and drum covers yet. More like learning the playing technique and most important, how to read music. I do the videos at home with the equipment I have. I would appreciate your comments. Also I'm not selling or advertising anything. I'm partially retired so I like doing this for my personal satisfaction.
@gamadrums25278 жыл бұрын
I am Puerto Rican as well, I agree with you.This lesson is more Dave Weckl style and not very latino. This lesson, like you said, should be done again with more cultural flavor. I do also have a lot of music training especially in drums and percussion from UPR, and from the Professor Pedro Castro (Berklee Graduated, Drums and Percussion). Need to have a tambora next to the drums set. Just my opinion.
@juanroldan43798 жыл бұрын
O wow! I remember those days playing merengue with a tambora next to my drums sitting on a chair. Thanks for the trip into memory lane. I'm semi-retired now. I used to teach at the local community college. I do have a you KZbin channel (more like struggle with it) in which I teach as if I was teaching new students. I'm not having much success with it. I would appreciate some input. I don't sell anything there. Everything is for my personal satisfaction.

Mike great lessson. im from Puerto Rico and the rythm you call bolero is the classical one defined by Ravel's Bolero, think of Maurice Ravel orchestral piece. When you talk to a latin guy about what a bolero is they rythm that comes to mind is completely different, think more of a latin "ballad" like music Rafael Hernandez, Vicentico Valdez, Los Panchos, Bobby Capo, etc among others. Whats your opinion on this man. Great lesson as always.

The guy himself did not even realize that he was playing rhumba clave when he tried to combine with the cascara . And when the other guy asked to clarify if there was a mix-up he confidently lied and said it was son clave and he showed the correct one on his knee but when he tried to play on the kit he couldn't play the son clave and cascara again 🤣 He has realized that and got embarrassed and totally changed the subject immediately . You guys needed to have better teachers at the beginning but somehow your channel grew anyways now you can afford better guys 🤣

Mike does a decent job but it's hard to beat Zack Albettas latin drumming lesson on youtube as an all round guide. I'm surprised Drumeo didn't get Chuck Silverman (RIP) to do this while he was still alive. As he worked with Drumeo and was an expert in this style of music, or styles rather.

If THAT is merengue, I'm Paris Hilton. Nice try. Props for the effort and interest. Besides what is "Latin"?... there's afrocaribbean... which has so many rythms... over 30 or 40 proper complete syncopated rythmic styles. "Latin" goes from mexico to Argentina and eveuthing in between... which would be like calling something "American". Like saying Jay Z is bluegrass.

Jonathan Acosta Oh ok, because last time I checked, the word Latin derives from many different countries, different cultures, therefore different styles of music. And all these music tastes come together to form another genre, so tell me what IS the properly formed style of Latin music? Maybe you should expand your Latin influence a little more.
