In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Drummer and professor of Percussion Dafnis Prieto demonstrates a basic rhythmic element of Cuban music -- the intricate and challenging Mozambique rhythm -- and shows how this rhythm builds upon the basic conga clave.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dafnis Prieto with his amazing ensemble at the Jazz Bakery in L.A. many moons ago - they were incredible! Standing ovation after standing ovation! The arrangements kinda reminded me of Frank Zappa, but in clave. Super avant garde and super exciting. Very humble cat as well...

Those young guys in the audience look lost hehe... but Ellis Marsalis' son Jason looks like he's digging it.

Just so you understand, there is no link between the "mozambique" rithmic style and "Mozambique Country". Unless some anthropologist goes to Cuba and digs deep on when Mr. Pedro Izquierdo discovered the link between his creation and Mozambique. his could alo be task for mozambican musicians (ethnomusicologists) or anthropologists in this measure to go out there and find out for the rest of us.

I believe there's actually a connection between the two. From what I remember, Pedro Izquierdo composed the Mozambique rhythm in honor of the Mozambique (communist-supported) independence movement (which Cuba supported actively) against the Portuguese rule. (Sorry, had to update the info of my previous comment:))
