I just started studying latin a few days ago and after a lot of note taking, I can read/pronounce/translate latin. All this after one hour every night lol. Tommorow night I'm just gonna review my notes, study them and the day after, I'll start trying to figure out all the other stuff. Thank you for making this video. It is a huge part in what helped me during my study session this night. ✌🏻

Very helpful video. At first I didn’t catch the “IO DO” part of the song, but then I realized that it meant “ Indirect object,” and “Direct Object.” Very helpful video!

This is all very simple, but once you get to sentences like "Itaque viro calores et figora perpetienda, tum etiam itinere et labores pacis ac belli, id est rusticationis et miliatrium stipendiorum, deus tribuit." you get lost very easily

From Cicero's "Oeconomicorum ex Xenophonte, Book 1" (with a couple of typos): Thus God allots to man the heats and colds [frigora] that will be endured, during a journey as well as [during] the labors of peace and war -- that is, of living in the country and of soldiers' [militarium] military services.

My god! I grew up being given Latin phrases and told what they meant until I got a 'sense' of meaning - which actually worked better for me than my other language courses. Unfortunately, my Latin lessons required that I 'trusted' the given translations, which, as you might expect, had some bias because of who was giving them.

so the English words did they descend originally from latin? like familia, family, Miliatruim - military Perfectum- perfect, that helps if u know English, they say English is very hard because its right to left and all other languages are left to right, i can pick up bits of japanese, spanish , French, Maori, Musical Latin, and English is back to front ie; a red house, other languages say house red. it is not easy if English is the primary, my friends who speak spanish pick up french quickly where I have to dissect each word, reading is easier, then speaking, Maori is my next Language my own indigenius language that was forbidden for 100 yrs, but our children learn much faster. Awesome video. Nga mihi nui kaiako, manaaki kia koe, thank you teacher, blessings to you. Maori has 13 letters all words end in a vowel, some words have 10 meanings, just to really stress ones brain and common adjectives provide the true meaning. Thanks again.

Quick question, how would you distinguish in latin these two sentences: "The family shows the statue to the girl" and "The girl's family show the statue". I guess I'm missing something but it seems they would be written the same way... how could one tell the difference??? (great video, thank you so much)
@alyrajwani7928
@alyrajwani7928 5 жыл бұрын
Braulio Pallares i am not entirely sure as I am a first year Latin student but I think you can tell based on the ending of "girl" if it is dative, then it means "to the girl" but if it is genitive, then it means "of the girl" or "the family of the girl." In English this can be changed to "the girl's family"

IO = Indirect Object; DO = Direct Object Since IO comes before DO just like in the song, and we know that statuam is the IO because it is accusative, we conclude that puellae is the DO. In your version if reginae was dative and therefore the IO, IO would be after the DO, which is not possible

For the 2nd sentence I read it as the "The family of the girl shows the statue of the queen" with puellae being genitive of family. What's the best way to avoid confusing the genitive sg for the dative sg

hm. Maybe in Mass, it's different ways how to pronunciate Latin because Regina is not how you said it in the Catholic prayer/song. It's exactly how it looks.

Hey, could someone tell me how literally Latin should be translated? Like in the sentence 'puer patrem iuvat' would you translate it as ' the boy helps the father' or 'the boy helps his father'?? Thank you 😊
@vincentiusrex
@vincentiusrex 6 жыл бұрын
Eliza Munday It depends on the context. If it is clear that the father is that of the child, it is unnecessary in Latin to say, "puer patrem suum iūvat." Meanwhile, in English, saying "his" is needed because it's sort of an article for "father". So, I'd say try not to be too literal with translations, and always consider the context. Fēlīciter.

Grear video, but ae reads like e in bed. In Middle Ages they prefered to write simply e: "Regina naute fortunam dat".
@vincentiusrex
@vincentiusrex 6 жыл бұрын
ianton That is true for some pronunciations and time periods, but the person in the video is using Restored Classical pronunciation, in which the way he pronounced ae is correct. You can also tell by how he used a hard "g" in "regīna" rather than (re-jee-na).
