I am not a dancer... but, during my elementary days. Folk dances is a highlight during inter-school competitions... And, I remember our PE teacher told my classmates (Tinikling dancers): Don't at look the poles! Just listen to the rhythm! Tak! Tak! Tak! Clap! Tak! Tak! Tak! Clap!...😊😊😊

We used to dance that in our school during my secondary school way back 1977 until now it's nice to watch the Filipino cultural dance and pass it to our younger generation

I tried tinikling before (ages ago), and I found it's actually easier if you don't look because seeing the bamboo poles moving can be distracting. I looked down once and almost lost my place in the rhythm. It's better to focus on the sound/rhythm without looking down.

That's the technique. Anyways the bamboo clappers are.doing.their best to go with the rhythm, too otherwise they'll gonna have some broken fingers. Dance Tinikling when I was in Grade 3 in Mababang Paaralan ng aming barangay. Practice includes clappers alone to synchronised ŵith the music. And dancers alone Dancing on the tune ŵithout the clappers.

Watching you ladies react to Tinikling made me realise that it is a great cardio workout..not only are you jumping/skipping the entire time, but the fear of getting your ankles caught in the bamboo is enough to keep your heart racing hahaha

YAY! Singkil is a Muslim royalty dance. The lady who was carried on bamboo poles is a princess and the rest are her attendants. The man is a prince who tries to win her heart. This version is a short one and incomplete, though. The fight dance and the finale were not shown, also the beautiful dancing of the attendants with their fans. The princess, in other versions, even dances atop the bamboo poles while being carried by the male attendants. The instruments are brass gongs of different sizes and a kulintang. You can buy miniature versions of those because the big ones are really heavy, depending on the quality. Indeed, Singkil is a very elegant dance! Muslim dances are like that. Growing up here in Zamboanga Peninsula, I got to see these dances during school events and I looove those! Even now, they are my favourite dances in the Philippines. Try watching kappa malong-malong. That one you can definitely do, at least , the female version. And yes, you can definitely see these dances in Zamboanga!

The singkil is from the Mindanao islands and Spanish colonization was difficult there. They were able to have a stronghold in Zamboanga, thus a dominant Spanish influence. The singkil is from other parts of uncolonized Mindanao so the music does not reflect Spanish/ Mexican traces.

When I was a kid there was this expert dance troupe that combines tinikling and singkil. The elegant girl dances on top of bamboo held by guys dancing tinikling. Philippine traditional dances in general are dangerous lmao there's one where you wave around lit candles inside pieces of cloth, like fire dancing.

You're right, Maglalatik there is way modern. The hip movements and other steps are an improvisation. And originally the Maglalatik is a standalone, like the beat is only being created by the dancers themselves thru tapping with the coconut shells. And their dance has less tapping.

The Singkil dance, is Pre Hispanic time dance from the southern region. the majority of whole country was Muslim and already influenced by Indian Empires before the Spaniards came and called it The Philippines. The Mexican and Spanish traditions came later. You can see the Tinikling as the Hispanic version from Singkil.

@@remzelkai2959 yes but this Tinikling version has Spanish 'influences" like some steps, clapping with the hands and clothing. Singkil has for example not Spanish influences but more Indian. But in basic they are the same kind of dances, this dance has indeed South East Asian roots!! NOT SPANISH

The first title (Cultural Rythms 2011) did all the parts but for the Bayanihan Dance Troupe, they only danced the last part of Sayaw sa Bangko but they did it so much better than the first title. Bayanihan is the official folk dance troupe in the Philippines and they're the real deal. They only danced the last part of Sayaw sa Bangko (2:00-2:50) . I mean they basically danced the way it should be danced.

Hello ladies, I like the video but what’s funny to me are your comments. I crack up every time. You’re both good at reacting 👌 I think you would do real good at this dance. Start at your own pace, it’s easy. Better to ask a Filipino friend for tips. Take care and see you in your next video

Maglalatik & tinikling are known as barrio dances, and singkil was known as tribal or Muslim dance.. We have more than 100 dances including principalia dances, barrio dances, Muslim and tribal dances..

these dances have their story of their own.. the first dance singkil is a part of a long story.. before spanish era, we have our own pricesses and they are not allowed to set foot on land that is why they are being carried.. the maglalatik is a traditional festive dance for single men.. tinikling on the other hand is a festive dance that evolved from singkil.. but more on the religious side of catholics as opposed to singkil which is more on the muslim side...

The way I remember the story of singkil is about a princess who got lost in the woods and the wood faeries, portrayed by the group of women at the first part were disturbed (fans depicted butterfly-like faeries) and tried to trap the princess by shaking the ground and vegetation beneath her feet (depicted by the bamboos). Then a prince came and went to save the princess by saving her from the forest. The princess also had a hard-to-get moment when she met the prince (and why not? lol) and eventually got saved and they married each other. Usually, this dance is performed at weddings in the Mindanao region and it is one of the most iconic dances here in the Philippines.

During my High School Physical Education subject I had this dance. I could not count how many times my foot was caught in the middle of the bamboo when I was just starting. Haha

Don't worry girls for the Tinikling since it only has the normal slow and unvarying beat or rhythm 😅. There are now modern style and competition-level Tinikling which has faster beats so all performers need to think faster and thoroughly memorize every transition and choreography they incorporated in it.

Maglalatik is danced by guys. The “hat” is not Chinese; it’s called salakot and is quite common in the countryside. You are right; theirs is a kind of modernized version. Maglalatik can be acrobatic, too, sometimes with some amount of tumbling involved. 🇵🇭

And it is actually danced by boys without shirts. Only pants with strings or cloth 20:26 wrapped around the waist like the manangguete climbing the coconut tree to take tuba or coco wine.

The tinikling one is a choreograph one but if you want to learn the basic tinikling and experiencing it. I must recommend you the barbara's restaurant in intramuros, manila for the gastronomic foods and ones in a lifetime experience trying to dance the basic steps of tinikling. I'm sure when dance it together with the dancers you will enjoy it. I hope you go travel in to the Philippines soon :)

Singkil is from the Maranao people in Lanao, part of Mindanao. The music is provided by kulintangan, an ensemble of ethnic percussion instruments. Obviously no Latin influence here. 🇵🇭

If you want to learn tinikling, then you have to sacrifice your ankles many times while in practice. When I was in highschool, my ankle got hit almost 100 times before I (barely) mastered the dance.

You should also check for Pandanggo sa Ilaw (Lighted Fandango) and there's this dance where they leap from benches to benches, I don't know what it's called. By the way, Tinikling means dance of the tikling bird (a kind of rail bird with long legs).

There are no known competitions for tinikling BUT every child who ever went to elementary school will know how to dance this and other folk dances. There are a lot of folk dances and besides tinikling, I have also tried the binasuan, where girls need to balance glasses with drinks on their heads and outstretched arms. Boys are just partners so I did not get to balance the glasses and we have a part where we get to drink whats in the glass. Check this link for your personal viewing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qafNqISKmpxkidU Also we have pandanggo sa ilaw where girls balance candles this time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anjJaYuXZbNlr80 I am actually quite confused with the names of the dances since we learned a lot on elementary amd high school days before 😅
