It is also worth noting that "ob amissum exercitum" can be analyzed as a dominant participle (aka 'ab urbe condita') construction: 'because of the loss of the army' (literally, 'because of the lost army'). Cf. also "Carthaginienses quoque Capuae AMISSAE Tarentum captum aequabant" (‘The Carthaginians likewise balanced the capture of Tarentum against the loss of Capua.’ Liv. 26.37.6). The so-called "dominant participle" constructions are very typical of Livy and Tacitus. It is also typical of Tacitus to use gerundival constructions in the genitive case to express the purpose without expressing the noun "causa". I agree with your positing this elliptical noun "causa" in the ablative case here: cf. also "Germanicus Aegyptum proficiscitur cognoscendae antiquitatis" ('Germanicus sets out for Egypt for the purpose of learning its antiquities.' Tac. Ann. 2,59). I guess this example without "causa" would be impossible in authors like Cicero. Regards from Barcino.
