Ikr, growing up my mom had to sit me down when I was very young to tell me that I probably shouldn’t tell any of my friends that i had two moms. She told me the names they’d call me and how I’d be most likely be mercilessly picked on. I know that must have killed my mom inside. When I was a teenager the only way my mom could get somewhat legally married was by going on a cruise to international waters and getting married by the ship captain. It wasn’t till HS that I could be totally open about my family with ppl outside my closest friends. But I had to be the baddest bitch in school, ready annihilate anyone who fucked with me. My test for potential new friends was to oh so casually say something about my moms wife and depending on the reaction I’d let them in. That’s how I met my best friend who was hiding she was a lesbian. I was the first person she came out to bc I was the only one she felt safe to do so with. My house became her refuge. She’s now married and her and her wife froze their eggs for a future with kids. When they got married I told her that one of a things that made me happiest was that they’d be able to walk hand in hand with their kids and she’s never have to tell them they had to hide the reality of their family. I don’t normally find proposals moving bc I always found marriage and all that goes with it boring. But bc I know how difficult and long the struggle for marriage rights have been I can’t help but be moved by this. I’ve got my one child and we live in a house with my sister and her family and our mother. Our kids grew up with a gay grandma and for a while a black trans grandma (whose still a great friend of the family). My 15 year old niece is in love with and dating a girl and my 17 year old niece started a LGBTQ group when a friend came out as gay and another as trans, so they could have more support. It’s a different world in some ways. But as amazing as the changes in our culture are, in 27 states it’s still legal to fire or evict ppl for being gay. The only reason I know my bff will be fine is be they live in a blue state with protection from anti gay bigotry in housing and the workplace. Unfortunately there are almost 30 states where there aren’t the same protections. There’s still work to do and unfortunately this presidents admin is doing its best to unwind many of those protections.

The most beautiful inspiring thing I have ever seen as a young lgbt+ kid of color growing up in central florida with no real gay presence or community for me to feel a part of , or have support from, with discrimination,racism, n prejudice at every corner, this gives me so much hope for my future, I love latrice so much, ever since I found her on drag race, she is a legend, my goddess, my Qween, My love, my strength, someone I look up to. This special moment is something that I will always have near to my heart as a small child I ways dreamed of getting married, so as I got older n found out I couldn't I was so hurt, and even with the marriage equality bill ,we still face obstacles that make it hard for us to live, and so to see this beautiful moment truly lifts my spirits. Out of every Drag Queen I have ever met or seen on tv I must say Latrice Royale you are a step above all including Ru! You have class that far surpasses and Queen and your words are always from the deepest part of your heart! You are always there to uplift other Queens! I wish back when I did drag in the 90's as Iowna Cuchi I wish had someone like you as a friend because in DE the Queens are all very petty and cut throat even when not competing.
