No one else is amazed that you taught a rat to READ?!?! Well maybe not read, but at least recognize the shape of the word (short or long) and attach it to the concept of either going up or spinning. That was the most amazing trick to me

I decided instead of a dog I want rats. I have had them before and they are amazing! Mine died of a brain tumor and my sister's which was mine's sister had to be dragged out of the bag we were going to bury mine in. Mine was Dultcha and my sisters was Raty. We also had other ones but my sister's killed my fist, second, and third since they were male so they fought. Then hers died in my arms on Christmas Eve.

Its funny because I've actually had the rats steal from the purse prop when not training - usually they'll bring it to me anyways but I've had rats try and stash the money and treats on occasion!

The only liquid treats I use are plain yogurt and meat baby food. I used to use meat baby food more so that’s probably what you saw, but since it’s high in protein it can cause issues for older rats if given regularly so I now mainly use plain yogurt and only switch to meat baby food as a special occasion .

What food do you use as treats, and where do you get the coloured balls?

Treat wise I tend to use Cheerios and Gerber puffs broken into 2-4 pieces each, sometimes when I want to give the rats extra motivation I’ll use meat baby food or yogurt but for the most part I stick to the dry treats. As for the balls I got the ones with star shaped in them from my local dollar store (and honestly I’m not a fan of them because they’re hard for the rats to grab). I got the slotted cat ones off amazon, and I got the mini wiffle balls from a local sporting store.

I see a lot of people use hand gestures for tricks, but can you use voice commands instead? Or would rats not understand them?

You can but as with dogs verbal cues are harder to train than hand and body cues. I'm never in a situation were a verbal cue would be more useful than a hand cue (except for come) and so I never go to that second step of teaching a verbal cue. But yes, they can learn if you really want to go that route. My girl Shadow would spin and twist different directions on verbal cue but after that I didn't find it worth the extra time to teach more verbal stuff. And of course all my rats know a verbal come cue because that is important.
