Latter-day Saints REACT to Heretic movie (SPOILERS!)

I’m gonna be honest y’all, this video missed the mark. Normally I love your videos, they really helped me on my mission, but this one felt incredibly biased against the movie, to the point it got key details about it wrong. Sister Paxton didn’t die, nor did she lose her faith, she also didn’t say that she was “just casually watching p**n the other day”, it was clearly meant to be a past experience that she accidentally admitted to. Either way I don’t see how it’s out of the realm of possibility for a sister missionary to talk about something like that. I heard plenty of elders admit to things that were 10 times worse on my mission. In my opinion this film did more to humanize missionaries and members of our church than any other film I’ve watched has. I liked that the sisters weren’t “perfect members” because it added depth to their characters and made them feel like actual breathing humans. Like it or not there are a ton of missionaries in our church just like them and judgmental videos like these only serve to push them away. I guess I’m just not seeing how this film was antagonistic towards the church. Sure the character of Mr. Reed is anti-religion but he is clearly the villain, I feel like this video’s assertion that the writers are using his character as their mouthpiece is just flat out incorrect. The two sister missionaries are the MAIN characters and they are treated as such. They are shown to be intelligent, empathetic, and resourceful. He also never convinces either of them to ditch their faith I have no clue where you guys got that from the movie, Sister Paxton literally says a prayer at the end of the movie, despite having reservations about prayer she does it anyway… in my opinion that’s faith… believing even when you have a lot of reasons not to. In conclusion I’m disappointed by the lack of critical thought that went into this video. It felt like the LDS version of Mr. Reeds board game analogy in the ways that it lacked nuance and simplified critical details. I hope that next time you guys do a video like this it will have more effort put into it.

I 10000% agree with this. I was impressed by the movies nuance and pleased to see it didn’t just punch down on Mormons and actually left the question of true miracles up to interpretation of the viewer at the end- directly contradicting the main villain.

She sort of seems to lose her faith in the moment when she says, "Prayer doesn't work." But I think she does keep to her faith because she chooses to pray anyway. The ending is kind of up to interpretation though (e.g. does she see the butterfly or not? Is she dead or not?).

@ her thoughts around prayer represent a common struggle in theism - why would God heal this person and not that person; why would God answer this prayer and not that prayer. Nothing about Mr. Reed led the missionary to this conclusion. Mr. Reed lacks the nuance and balance to understand a viewpoint like that. She had come to the conclusion before this that prayer might not *work* in the sense of healing or saving people physically consistently, but she finds value in prayer anyway. And you’re right, she prays to Heavenly Father right then. I have a hard time seeing this as some sort of win for Mr. Reed.

I thought the movie was awesome. I’m a member, both me and my wife both served missions. I served in three different missions due to Covid, and war in my second mission so I got to see different mission cultures in three different countries. I thought they did a fantastic job showing how missionaries are Baptisms are totally portrayed as just a number throughout the mission, and missionaries definitely share intimate details of their lives with their companions. I think the first scene was weird, but was trying to quickly show who the characters are. One being not totally aware of the normal lingo of sexual situations but still being curious and naive, while the other obviously was a bit more aware. Overall it just makes one, no matter what their belief is, kind of just question what they believe. Whether atheist, Christian or whatever. I agree with some of the other comments y’all came into the review with a negative outlook on a pretty well put together film. My wife and I will post our own review on my channel, if anyone wants to see a different point of view also from members, stay tuned on my channel.

I encourage you all to watch this movie before forming your own opinion. I got a completely different view of this movie. I think the way the sisters are portrayed was very accurate and their characters were whole with complex thoughts and opinions. This review is extremely simplified and seen through the lense of "this movie is out to get me." Go in with an open mind. It doesn't pick a side. I thought it was great. Make your own opinion :)

I think it’s an extreme dishonest to say this film is unfair to Mormons . Yes in some parts they are shown to be naive , But Sister Barnes pushed back against Hugh Grants argument . Sister Paxton is the hero of the piece and at the end of the story may retain her faith but that’s up to interpretation

While the movie does confront many controversial historical accuracies of the LDS church and it's founding leader. You have to understand it isn't a dig solely directed at Mormons, it's an invitation to a deeper conversation in the flaw of subjective personal religious experiences and how they're not a good metric to discern truth. Your feelings are yours to acknowledge and interpret as you choose, but we're human and we're flawed, more often than not we go back to our presuppositions and skew data that confirms our biases, everyone does this. But the movie as the directors put it was to challenge certainty, that's why the ending is meant to be interpreted in many ways and create conversations about it, if people are absolutely certain of their beliefs that ends dialogue before it even begins. I think LDS members being defensive about this movie is a good thing, because it probably struck into some real aspects they acknowledge but they don't talk about for the sake of conformity.

The way it depicts our faith is akin to an amateur film. Even Deseret News was compelled to write an article about it, and the church released a statement on how they keep missionaries safe. This movie isn't the Saratov Approach. This isn't a film about our faith, where the antagonists are as complicated as the protagonists. Where bad things happen to good people, and the light of Christ shines to protect. This is a movie where the missionaries are breaking their own standards, before the inciting event happens, and our beliefs are treated as set dressing. There are good movies about traumatic events and faith. This isn't one of them.

After reading a lot of reviews, it really seems like the furthest depth of the writer's research for Hugh Grant's dialogue was looking through the top posts on r/atheism and skimming the CES Letter, and the actresses' main motivation in taking and performing these roles was to paint them as naive and repressed and opressed in every sense. And then the second half of the movie is just a ripoff of the much better movie Barbarian. In other words, a complete waste of time, especially for Latter-day Saints.

I just saw the film tonight. I actually think the film was respectful of our faith. It had moments where the sisters pushed back against the villain’s critiques. And I don’t think the naive sister loses her faith. And I thought the movie was very thought provoking but not on the religious stuff (I agree it wasn’t deep criticism of the church), but it was thought provoking from a narrative/plot standpoint. I actually really enjoyed the film.

Spreading false Informations about some cast assuming they know anything but they know nothing is the truth. They won’t watch the film or research the many videos of interviews from real sources outside the media. Many active members have seen this film and agree with it not being about the church. It’s not offensive and have no problem with it. They know the members who worked on it personally Making sure it was done respectfully and as accurately as possible in this fictional story. These negative comments are from people who actually think they are suppose to believe mr reeds diabolical characters dialog. They are acting like it’s a documentary on the church or a reality show taking it way to serious It’s a movie with a script and actors who act.

A Quiet Place kind of falls apart when you think about it for more than a few seconds. Like these monsters are supposed to have super hearing, they click like bats to navigate... they should be able to "see" with their ears just like bats. I saw the movie and I thought the acting was pretty good for all of them, I didn’t feel the spirit watching it of course and if you want an uplifting movie absolutely don’t watch it but it didn’t upset me or shake my faith by any means. A lot of the arguments used in the movie were pretty common and the type of stuff you could say for about any religion. It didn’t scare me besides the scene where the one lady brought the pie down to the basement. It was pretty predictable in a lot of parts and while it was creepy it started giving me “knives out” vibes at the end where it was a lot of over explaining

Horror movies have been very dependent upon tropes to quickly get you in to the story so they can scare you. I was not holding my breath that the sister missionaries would be a good representation of missionaries or our faith. I think it's interesting what they brought up about other people of faith also feeling misrepresented. I think at its core, Hollywood is anti-religion, so it doesn't surprise me they can't seem to get in the mindset of someone who is actively religious.

I saw it. The first scene was pretty cringy but overall it was entertaining. The sister missionaries were strong characters, not just naive girls. The first part of the movie reminded me (just a little) of an experience I had on my mission that was mildly creepy and involved deception used to get my companion and me into a dangerous situation. I probably wouldn't see the movie again, mainly because horror isn't my favorite genre. The other people in my group said they enjoyed it. It sparked some interesting conversations afterward.

Same could be said of the church. They don’t need your money, yet they ask you to clean their toilets and pay for your YW camp fees amongst many other things. If you haven’t looked up the church’s net worth, real estate and businesses they own, your tithes only really pays/guarantees your worthiness for a temple recommend. Just something to think about.

Anti or anti "lite" doesn't bother me personally because My extended family still has land in Illinois that our ancestors left when they were driven out and then travelled across the plains to Utah. It's a reminder to us for several things.. Bad things happen and we have it so easy compared to the literal threat of life they experienced, so we can deal with bad press, nasty words.. whatever. Also to be wary of governments and how even in this great country we live in.. things can go bad.

Thank you for having this podcast. I was actually really interested in seeing this film, as I love horror. But after hearing what you said, I think I'm going to pass. It's so frustrating to hear how my faith is being portrayed in popular media. It makes me really sad, especially since people not of our faith are giving this film rave reviews. Probably the best representation that I've seen of our faith in any media is an '80s Made-for=TV film with Linda Hamilton called "Go Toward the Light. "That was a really beautiful story.

I actually watched this movie (I’m a believing member) this video gets so many facts about the film wrong that it isn’t even funny. I actually recommend it, I felt like it was a fairly nuanced and respectful portrayal. I don’t understand why Saints Unscripted hated it so much. 🤷‍♂️

That’s an inaccurate interpretation of the movie. The girls maintain their faith. And Paxton is saved by what one could interpret as being a miracle. The girls outsmart him and remain independent.

I do not agree with a lot of things you are saying on this critic. I am a former member and you have no idea how much s@x missionaries talk where in a mission. Not sure about sister missionaries, but guys are constantly talking about making out, and having s@x. Missionaries always talk about salvation for others will bring salvation for themselves. You talk about atheism and how basic these concepts are but you are only saying this to appear smarter. Tell me about atheism college level then? I think the actors were great especially if they were newcomers. What else would you expect for 19 year olds?

I have absolutely no desire to watch this movie. And this podcast reinforced that for sure it makes me so sad and frustrated when Hollywood falsely portrays missionaries or members of the church as a whole. And after hearing about the sisters talking about pornography like that, that makes this movie even worse. Simply put, I think this movie is basically meant to misrepresent the church.

I enjoyed the movie. I did feel the opening dialog about porn felt forced, but I also felt it functioned as foreshadowing for later events with Sister Paxton. The arguments were weak, IMO, but they were well enough presented. Sister Barnes pushback was solid. First of all, this movie forgets that the Sister missionaries are not allowed to teach a single man in a household without a Ward mission leader present. Or they have to turn it over to two male missionaries. That is in their white handbook to keep them safe. Unless that is part of the plot that they broke that rule.

In the movie, the missionaries stated they could not enter the home without a woman (roommate or wife) present. There was a massive storm brewing and this man man reassured the missionaries that his wife was just in the other room and he would grab her so they can come in. Whether or not his wife is real or they just believe that she is real is used a plot device during the first portion of the movie.

The girl hasn’t seen the film and is quoting the wrong actors lines. Quoting wrong information about the actors. Yes he’s twisting the first scene getting it all wrong quoting the lines all wrong! . This review is so inaccurate and missing all the good points of the film. So many active members loved the film and accurate representation of missionaries which is rare to see in Hollywood. Not realizing this review is only making church members look like the bob ross board game , weirdos instead of embracing all good. There’s 114 raves reviews from ny times Hollywood reporter entertainment tonight extra … then there’s this review here which is the odd man out so opposite of what 99 percent are raving about. Trying to discourage people from going to the “ movie “ it’s not a documentary on the church or an attack in any way.

I just got out of the movie 10 minutes ago. Great review on your part. To me, there were so many half-truths mixed in with lies/misinformation/stereotypes. Logically your brain can work through some of where Reed is coming from but you also recognize that it’s a misrepresentation of us. I have no problem with thrillers/horror movies. But this made me very uncomfortable. It just seemed like a constant beat down on our faith (figuratively and literally).

I’m not sure if any of these people served on missions but missionaries are human and absolutely we would awkwardly discuss worldly matters just like this. In fact, missions are where most of us sheltered types first learn about such things.

Another minor inaccuracy was Topher Grace’s character not having a companion . Perhaps he was supposed to be the Ward Mission Leader but they referred to him as Elder .. this is an extemlry minor error but if I was the dramaturg on this film I would of fixed that

interesting takes for sure… after seeing it, it seems to be less of an “atheistic think piece” and more so about a serial killer obsessed with control- specifically the control of women- and found the most convenient means of doing so. as for the actresses, i think this is a poor critique of their performance as well. they were on the verge of tears the entire time- i would have been too if i had been in such a situation on my mission. as for the script, i believe they could have tweaked some things for accuracy (for example when sis paxton said joseph smith “founded the church”) but not once did they actually believe what the villain was telling them. this is obvious with sis barns and sis paxton only said that he made great points as a survival tactic (as women often feel the need to diffuse situations to not further aggravate the male aggressor)

That guy really want's to dissuade people from watching the movie. It wasn't boring, it was very thrilling and made you think a lot about religion. He really misses all the subtleties and messages the movie gets across. The end is ambiguous, but as a believer, one can see the miracle at the end where Sister Paxton is saved by her dead companion.

Sheesh.. more reason to avoid 99.9% of the movies that come out nowadays.This one really scrapes the bottom of the barrel. Hulu will probably wholeheartedly embrace such garbage. Shame on Hugh Grant for participating in it. I can literally count on one hand the number of movies that have come out since covid that are actually worth watching. 'Inside Out2' and 'Six Days in August' are the only 2 movies that came out this year that we actually went to the movie theater to see. The movie industry is definitely going off the deep end.

Hugh Grants best work Best realistic LDS characters many members seeing this film and feeling finally seen and respected. Practice members have actually seen the film and love it come out being proud of their faith. I don't get why so many are basically making others think that they should see this movie (many would not, but since someone from Saints Unscripted did, "it's not THAT bad")... It is rate R, it is way too soon after two sisters were nearly murdered, in a horrific way (in Texas, 2020), maybe things have become so lax that channels like this are blatantly making it "no big deal" to see a rated R movie, so I am a little surprised so many channels are actually seeing it, in the theatre and paying for it.

I completely disagree that Sister Paxton lost her faith at the end. The part where she said prayer doesn't work was jarring, especially since she didn't specify what she meant by "work," since prayer has so many purposes. Still, I felt like both sisters held strong until the end. Mr. Reed said he controlled her enough to come to his weird dungeon, but then she stabbed him and ran out of it. This invalidates his entire argument because clearly, she cannot be controlled, yet she is still religious.

I really am struggling to understand how this guy can say how bad the script is when its been universally loved by many many other 'movie critics' and film fans who are all coming from an unbiased ground. If you are LDS and saying the acting or writing was bad, youre quite obviously upset with how the movie depicted 2 young ladies rhat represent you and how theyre treated. Truth be told, the script is incredily tight and doesnt an incredible job subverting expectations and keeping you on edge. We wait and we wait for Mr Reed to do something abhorrent but he consistently reminds them they can leave whenever they please and hes not holding them hostage and comes up with ridiculous schemes to make them think and question their beliefs. He challenges their belief throughout in very thoughtful ways that arent low hanging fruit jabs at mormonism or religion in general. In conclusion, if you are confident in challenging your own beliefs and conceptions of life and religion, i highly recommend seeing the movie with an open mind and have fun with it.

I think the whole point of religious belief is to believe despite facts. Like the protagonist were very smart and challenged the antagonist and eventually fought him off. I think the scene about prayer was beautiful and honest about rationalizing religion to a man that can’t stand hypocrisy. Like it’s never in doubt that he’s not a bad guy but he points out the hypocrisy of religion. But the ending isn’t saying she rejected her religion or her belief. The butterfly at the end is indicative of her belief is validated. Facts disagree with all religion but that’s not the point with prayer or faith. Seems like you don’t like the guys on here don’t like being challenged

Seems sincere, nice, but is deceptive and his only goal is to take the girls captive and leave them miserable in his basement (hell). Ok. I watched the movie. Here’s my take. The Acting was great. Accuracy on our beliefs and the church? It was… mid. It had many creepy moments and was suspenseful, but there was some things that made me literally “lol”. No profanity or sex. That's good. And I will say, there was some laughable arguments in the movie. And the movie really did drag on with the villain's monologue, like bro ok I get it you don't believe.

I stumbled upon this video after doing my typical YT review search on movies I recently watched. I’m about 5 minutes in. I’ll start by saying I’m not LDS, but was a Jehovah’s Witness the first 15 years of my life (so, until 1990) and did plenty of door knocking. I can assure you, there are those who would never talk about sex and those who would do more than just talk about it. So, I’m gonna have to assume, especially in 2024, the same goes for LDS and all of the other sects of that type. Second, how can this dude criticize the script of A Quiet Place when there was almost no talking? 🤣 I know they communicate, but that’s just hilarious to me. This guy seems like a know it all who people probably pretend to like to his face, but find incredibly annoying. But that’s just my first impression. Like I said, I’m only 5 minutes in. How this missionaries are portrayed aren’t important. The just wanna prove that religion it’s real. It’s a fantasy. One of the sisters did not have basic sexual understanding. That was the point of the 🌽 chat they had. The other sister was more experienced which was also why she had a contraceptive thing in her arm. Amen. Does it say if you don't get somebody baptized your salvation is lost. I do not think it does. So saying that it is good for her salvation is quite misleading. Her salvation as a daughter of God is a free gift given to all God's children.
