In the 1970s I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home (parents had split up, mother had custody of us kids. She was a mentally ill, abusive monster). As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery. The Carol Burnett show was one of many tv shows I watched regularly in daily syndicated reruns. More than just entertained me, it really helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed happiness, laughter and joy in an otherwise joyless existence. The Carol Burnett show was the one and only tv show whose sketches had me and my sister literally rolling on the floor, clutching our sides with laughter (especially if the sketch had Tim Conway in it. He was the best). EXCEPT for these "The Family" sketches. When Eunice yelled and/or scrunched up her face in anger, she was the exact spitting image of our mother. It was just too painful. The part where Eunice screams at Mama over the peppermill is all too familiar to me. Countless times at the drop of a hat, Mother unjustifiably screamed at the top of her lungs at us kids over various inanimate objects in our place, practically on a daily basis. My sister and I would sit completely stone faced through these "Family" sketches. I don't recall them eliciting a single laugh from either one of us (not even the occasional presence of Tim Conway helped).

Carol Burnett based these characters on her own alcoholic parents and her grandmother who was driven mad by all the bad behaviour! Anyone who has someone in their family afflicted by alcohol abuse and the dysfunctional behaviour and antics it entails, would see ‘Family’ for what it really is! C Burnett’s Alcoholic Family in an Auto-biography on screen!

I grew up for a good portion of my childhood in Alabama with a large and highly dysfunctional family. My mom could be a stand in for Mama, most the time. The snotty sarcasm and disrespect in response would NEVER fly, though. That sort of mistake happens only once.

@@QueenOfTheNorth65 multi layered for sure, and we watched as a family, too. but in my case, my parents were exactly like Mama and Eunice and Ed…the name calling and the undermining and the nagging… but they were unable to see it, and i had to cut them out of my life, like how the Alan Alda sketch was when he played Larry. Lots of people stick by family no matter what, but thats how terrible they had become. It is interesting the dynamics Mama had with her various sons whom we rarely see, because they prob cant stand her negativity. Lol!

@ do u mean the one where Ed calls her from the airport and then Dick van dyke knocks at the door and stays for dinner?
@eduardo_corrochio
@eduardo_corrochio 2 ай бұрын
@@Mister_Listener No, I don't mean that one. That isn't "Overnight Guest", that's the "Visit from Dan" sketch with Dick (and also featuring Tim Conway as Mickey). Dick plays an old pal of Ed's who drops by out of the blue at the house but Ed isn't home, then Ed phones Eunice there from the airport and breaks up the marriage over the phone; he left her for another woman. Dick Van Dyke basically replaced Harvey Korman in season 11 on Carol's show in the last season they made, if I'm not mistaken. The one I'm eager to watch is the sketch that aired between Dan's visit and the Password game sketch (the latter being notorious for Tim's "siamese elephants" story/ routine and the blooper). The rare one, "Overnight Guest", apparently involves Mama dropping in on a newly divorced Eunice. I have not seen that skit anywhere on the web.

The cut version removed so much context; I always wondered why that "Chocolate Mousse" lady was so rude to mama, what went on when they were fighting over who sits on the outside, or why mama seemed to be in the bathroom for such a brief amount of time. The cut version seems very choppy. This episode is an absolute gem!
