Makes me wonder what my father was thinking on his way to America after being adopted from Latvia after WW2 makes me feel his pain!

Although the lyrics are utterly sad, it´s really gratifying to see how phonetic the Latvian spelling is: we can get easily understand all the sung words from it and this is an amazing appeal for learning a language to me, besides, of course, its evident melodiousness and precious preservation of old Indo-European traits! Liels paldies for the lyrics and for uploading this here!

This is haunting, and I don't know why. I don't have a clue what the words mean in English.

+Bexy Evans In that case, I guess, the verbal part of the song and the non-verbal part are in line with each other. This is the the bid of farewell of a man leaving to war. Translation of the lyrics: I've got to leave, I must go, I cannot stay here My rye & barley that have been sown will stay behind - those are not to reap My horse that has been brought up will stay behind - it is not to ride My bride with whom I've fallen in love will stay behind - she is not to take I've got to leave, I must go, I cannot stay here Who will reap my rye & barley can ride my horse Who will ride my horse can take my bride I've got to leave, I must go, I cannot stay here

I can imagine how tough it must've been for him though to leave everything behind. It's not like he had any kind of choice, but it was compulsory for them to go knowing they may never see their loved ones again. By the way, thank you for the translation, it really helps. God bless! :) Baltic folk

Could you provide us some historical background of the song, what era or events does it refer to, does he have to leave for anything particular?
