- 12:44 No, that was not in the Black Forest but in the Teutoburg Forest, where the Hermann Monument (Arminius) stands today. Looks a bit like the Statue of Liberty in NY in male :-) - 14:25 This is the area where I live, near the Drachenburg (Dragon Castle) in the Siebengebirge (Seven Mountains) in western Germany with the saga of Siegfried. Siegfried, in search of the treasure of the Nibelungs thanks to his invincible sword, kills a dragon, in whose blood he then bathes.

Germany must have been very beautiful in the past. Today it is a single cultivated landscape without any wild spaces.

Not true.a lot of newly established wild spaces,why do I answer a bot.
@fangan477012 күн бұрын
@@emiliajojo5703 That's trashtalk. There is just 0.6 % wilderness in Germany and actually no real primeval forests left, whereas before the Middle Ages the whole of Europe was covered in primeval forests consisting of oak and beech trees.
@emiliajojo570312 күн бұрын
@fangan4770 only by your definition of wilderness.of course there are very few og wild areas,but everywhere I look the forests start to change,mixed wood,lots more of little lakes,dead wood,just renaturation.the north of bavarian forest has been left alone,and new wilderness emerges.and this happens more and more.
@fangan477012 күн бұрын
@@emiliajojo5703 No, these are biological, scientific facts. There are ‘Wälder’ and ‘Forste’ (in german). Forests no longer actually exist with the exception of some national parks, as everything is utilised commercially, which means: cultivated landscape. And these areas are often hostile habitats for many animal and plant species and of course also dramatically change the appearance of the land. ‘Everywhere I look’ is your opinion btw and very subjective. In addition, the agricultural economy is extremely toxic for the flora and fauna and has also massively changed the appearance of the country. I can only recommend that you read up a little on the subject before calling other commentators ‘bots’.

2:25 The city WAS destroyed in WW2. The similar architecture you mean was from the hanseatic league. Riga was meber of the hanseatic league. These were the houses and offices of the hanseatic merchants. This one with the jagged gables. 9:12 These golden columns on the "Victory Column" are captured French cannons from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. But you can definitely tell the difference between a Lithuanian or a US KZbinr. This guy knows a bit about history. US tourists always think that this is a backdrop that we have built just for them, like in Disney Land. You don't need to ask an American about the Teutonic Order or that castles used to have a purpose.

@@thebestman92-rq5xc The "Teutonic Order" or "German Order" were technically speaking Germans, but they were a religious order, a brotherhood, monachus et miles, similar to the Knights of Malta, the Knights of St. John or the Knights Templar. They played a role in the siege of the city of Acre during the Third Crusade. But they failed badly there and then, on behalf of the Pope, they took on an easier task, the "liberation" of the Baltic states from the heathens. Their boss was not a king either, but the "Grand Master". The coat of arms of the Teutonic Order is still used today as the emblem of the German armed forces. The current Grand Master, Frank Bayard, was elected in 2018.

12:10 Actually… I don’t think anyone had that idea to go medieval in Frankfurt… the tourism board leans more into Goethe‘s time, late 1700s, or romanticism, first half of the 1800s… there are however some medieval faires in the region, iirc, because, castles and stuff. The Christmas market(s) is/are a big thing though. There are a couple of videos here on the Frankfurt Christmas Market.

No, the Black Forest was not the place where the Germanic tribes defeated the Romans, but the Teutoburg Forest in northwest Germany near the Netherlands. Arminius, a native of Cherusci who was kidnapped as a bargaining chip for the Romans and then grew up as a Roman, returned to the region in northwest Germany as a respected Roman and began to understand on the spot why the tribes did not like the Romans, as most of the Germanic tribes loved their freedom and their laws! He then began to betray his kidnappers and led them into a trap with a battle lasting several days, which the Romans fatally lost. The Battle of Varus took place in the Teutoburg Forest near Osnabrück.

01:00 The photo you’ve seen captures the Eibsee, a beautiful lake at the base of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, which stands at 2,962 metres. This mountain is part of the Wetterstein range in the Alps, marking the border between Germany and Austria. The cable car visible in the picture is the Zugspitze Cable Car (Seilbahn Zugspitze). This isn’t a short lift to a higher road; it’s a direct route from the valley station at the Eibsee up to the Zugspitze’s summit. It’s famous for holding records in cable car construction, with the longest unsupported span of over 3,200 metres and the world’s tallest support tower at 127 metres. At the top, the Zugspitze summit offers panoramic views of mountain peaks across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy, with facilities including restaurants, an observation deck, and Germany’s highest chapel. The experience is one of the most unique and scenic ways to reach the top of the Alps.

If cities were not destroyed by WWII, then modernity with its idea of a car-friendly city destroyed the cities, not only in Germany. Some cities were able to reverse it, e.g. Freiburg or Amsterdam in NL.
@matt4711081513 күн бұрын
Yes, a lot was destroyed in the 1960s, for the sake of Cars and Streets.😢 But also some beautiful Trainstations that survived the war, were demolished in the 60s and 70s, because the old architecture was seen as too high maintenance, for example in Hamburg the Stations Altona and Sternschanze.
@PropperNaughtyGeezer13 күн бұрын
That's right. It went back to the Athens conference of the "Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne" in 1933. But very few people know that. In Frankfurt in particular there were fierce student protests against it, otherwise the cities would look like Halle-Neustadt. There were no protests there against a similar policy and this is what the cities of the future should look like.

Rothenburg was heavily bombed in WW2.
@matt4711081513 күн бұрын
I would not say "heavily bombed", considering Hamburg, Dresden, Koeln, etc. But yes, Rothenburg was attacked by a Bombersquad on March 31st 1945, destroying about 40% of the town, including 750 meters of the medieval City Wall. 😢 Why did they bomb it? 🤷♂️ Just because, to kill some civilians. There were no significant factories producing stuff.
