I really like Latvian Folk music which is why I have an interest in learning Latvian. But.. am I wrong? It seems as if most songs are about a man's horse, his wife, the sun, or his field, usually in that order. Here is the question I have for you though. You talk about the difficulty of Latvian verb conjugations and all the noun declensions. I watched another channel where the fellow who was an English speaker learned to speak Russian. He said forget about all that stuff just concentrate on learning the words. Learn as many words as possible then pick all that stuff up after as you go along and listen to them. Do you think that would work with Latvian? I know quite a number of Latvian words from listening to folk music but I'm just not sure about his idea and if it will work. Even if I don't understand the words Latvian music is great!
@liesmazarina75784 жыл бұрын
I think, it depends on person, who is learning. I presume, that, if person has good musical hearing, he/she will understand and distinguish all forms of verbs and nouns, but if not, then it could be quite hard, because we really have a lot of forms forms for verbs and nouns.
@irregularLatvian4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for you comment! Okay, so here's my take on this - YES. I do believe in learning a lot of words rather than attacking grammar head-on. It is useful to understand that grammar exists, so that you can sort of distinguish between 2 different words and 2 ways of declining one word, for example. But don't break your brain just yet. My approach to teaching - learning "key" words, and building around that. Most important - to have fun!

Anete seems happy and friendly. I guess, it's because she doesn't live in Latvia :) Most Latvians, especially women, are very different. They are the hardest to meet, get acquainted with, or befriend of all the people I've ever met (I've lived in several countries, 2 years in Latvia). The only exceptions were non-Latvians, foreigners living here, and those Latvians who came back after spending many years abroad, or some occasional crazy artist. Has anyone else had the same (or different) experience? Perhaps, absolute majority of happy, friendly, open, and positive Latvians have left the country (like Anete), and the those that remain are like this, I don't know... you tell me
@irregularLatvian4 жыл бұрын
and yet.. "es visu savu dzīvi esmu bēdīgs". After a while of being sad, Latvians go into a meta-level and develop a layer or humor that makes us appear happy again.

I am one of the Latvians. I don't like people :D, but there are friendly people for sure. Just make sure you are talking with substance and no small talk. And if you smile for no reason, people will think you are weird :D

I have exactly the opposite experience as it was easy for me to meet people, particularly women. I am now happily married with a Latvian, we have 2 kids and I do love the country and its people.

@@kikist8368 The weather here ain't bad either but for a lot of rain. Not that I'm going out anywhere. I'm living on Italian pasta here, and going nowhere since late Feb. I have no potatoes, or beets, or eggs, or dill, or cucumber. Only two boxes of Chinese made pasta, fraudulently sold to me online as "Italian", and a huge can of "Greek" dolmadakia made in Turkey. The weather here demands a raincoat and waterproof boots. I have only Chinese boots that leak. The American company that used to make these boots was sold to the Italians, who then sold it to the Chinese. Now the same with pasta. If my Kentucky whiskey comes to me made in China....

@@anthonyjoe9139 Pasta is not too bad either. Whatever you have is good and for the time being I'm also at home doing nothing. Why don't you make your own bread for a change? I did previous day and it ended up pretty decent. As for your boots it makes me pretty sad their getting water inside. You could maybe try to buy some online if you've got any money to afford new ones. Well whiskey made in China is not a very good idea, is it? Ha ha! So you can maybe try out another drink instead. But for god's shake do not try German beer cause you would be very dissapointed !
